Ryder Cup 2018

Euro's so far this week = 69.1
Americans = 70.3

The Americans have the best ever average world ranking entering the tournament at 12. But I believe that Europe at 18, may also have their best team ever by that statistic. The Americans have typically looked better on paper, sometimes by a fair margin pretty much every year... and have not win in Europe in 25 years.

Except for 2006 - that may have been the Worst US ryder Cup team ever. I beleive they changed the scoring system to qualify a bit after that... they had Brett Wetterich, JJ Henry, and Vaughn Taylor, career journeyman on the team that year.

I am all over Team Europe at +137 on my site... and apparently they are getting better odds in the States.

I didn't read the article but is the headline misleading? He actually finished 30th. It's a big accomplishment just to qualify for the Tour Championship. I'm not a Phil guy but let's give him credit at 48 years of age competing against guys half his age. That being said, let's hope he shows up to the Ryder Cup.

It mentioned that Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed and Brooks Koepka were all at the bottom of the leaderboard.

I need a job where I can finish last and earn $150K

It is a big accomplishment for a 48 year old to make the tour championship. My best guess at the last 48 year old to make it was Kenny Perry, but I could be wrong.

However, once there Phil did play really, really bad. To the point where some are questioning if he will actually play more than twice total during the entire Ryder Cup.

It will be interesting to see who the Americans decide to play less at the Ryder Cup. Over the first two days the average player has to play 2.67 sessions.

Is it possible that Phil Mickelson may only play one session? This is not a great course for him, and I can't see him playing any foursome matches.

I don't think Furyk would be so conservative to only play Tiger in 2 games due to his back. But I can't see him playing in all e sessions.

Speith-Reed seemed to be a guarantee for 3 or 4 matches in the past, but Speith has been really bad this year.

First round Fourball matchups and my predictions:

Koepka/Finau vs Rose/Rahm - EUROPE
Fowler/Johnson vs Rory/Olesen - USA
Speith/Thomas vs Casey/Hatton - DRAW
Woods/Reed vs Molinari / Fleetwood - EUROPE

Europe 2.5
USA 1.5

Players sitting out:

USA - Mickelson, Watson, Dechambeau, Simpson
Europe - Noren, Garcia, Stenson, Poulter

I figured they would have put Mickelson here, because you can't risk in him in foursomes. He probably only plays once on Saturday.

I am a little surprised they went with Finau over Dechambeau. Watson and Speith have both been iffy for the past 3 or 4 months tough call on either.

I would have thought that the Euros would have used Ian Poulter in the opening pair for some emotion. Also surprised to see they are not playing Alex Noren instead of Olesen. After all he won the regular Euro tour event at this location 3 months ago.

Anyone staying up to watch?

As bad as those picks looked, I still made a net gain of about 6% on those picks

It's odd that the teams put out the weaker players in foursomes than four-ball. I guess they really valued that fast start in the morning.. which makes sense.

Current Score - US 3, Europe 1

Yeah I like with how poor Rory is playing getting split in these foursome matches. That helps with Bubba/Webb pairing I don’t like.
DJ/Fowler-Rose/Stenson is the key match.

Odd pick - Bryson Dechambeau and Phil Mickelson are nothing alike despite what the announcer says. (I know Brandel Chamblee sees it more like I do below)

Phil Mickelson sometimes throws crap against the wall, or does things differently to show others that he is smarter than them.

Dechambeau makes all changes on a very calculated manner. That type of personality tends to dislike people who just do crap to be different like Mickelson.

Extremely different personalities.

I thought DeChambeau would be with Tiger but maybe his crazy analytics will tame Phil’s gamble status.

This pairing is weird but it’s worth the gamble.

BTW I gotta say the NBC Ryder Cup music is very underrated awesome and fires you up.

The US looking much better than Europe early. Did not see the matches this morning, but hard to believe that Rory had 0 birdies in fourball. That is unacceptable.

But it is very hard to sit him.

There are some tough personalities to pair. Bryson is not part of the young "clique".

For Europe, I would think Hatton has to be one of the toughest to pair. If I was his partner, I am not sure I could deal with any of his antics. Such a baby on the course. Did not see the matches from last night to see if he acted OK. And if Hatton has to work extra hard to stay calm, it probably throws his game off as well.

Tracking the odds (to Win outright), per Bet 365. A draw both lose.

At start: USA -112, Europe +130
(After first 4 games) : USA -188, Europe +220

Europe giving the Americans a butt kicking in the afternoon session... In total Europe is up 14, through 32 holes. Don't know if I have ever seen a series of holes like that,

That being said, the worst case scenario for US after day 1 is 5-3.

The Mickelson-Dechambeau pairing is horrific.

US played well to win the morning at times.. the US played god awful to lose the afternoon
for a team that has so many guys who make tons of birdies we sure putt so bad in this thing.

Europe is our daddy in the Ryder Cup. It's not over but I'm never optimistic in Europe. They somehow just make all the putts they need to.

just keep it close enough until the singles matches

The afternoon was sick. Keep groups the same in the morning but seriously shake things up in the afternoon. No more Phil till Sunday.
