Saint Dougie...

I'm convinced that some people either can not read for context or bend arguments to fit their narrative. Most of the people who dislike Doug never said he wasn't a good coach. I know I have not. .
So you think he is a good coach?

I'm convinced that some people either can not read for context or bend arguments to fit their narrative. Most of the people who dislike Doug never said he wasn't a good coach. I know I have not. What I did say is that he a steaming turd of a human being from most accounts.

I think some people take more joy watching Doug's cronies scramble around to defend him. I mean CouseCuse is a prime example of being a bit over the top.
Much of what you say is true. I really try to be objective and didn't comment much in this thread for quite a while. I don't love the guy or hate the guy.

Here's my opinion of him. I appreciate that he took the SU job when we were considered one of the bottom 10 teams in college football, and no decent coach wanted to touch us with a 10 foot poll. I think he did a very good job of ressurecting us from the laughing stock that we were. Who knows if we get the ACC call or if we're in a position to hire a coach like Dino without returning to mediocrity. He left the wrong way, but it happens a lot in sports, so it didn't bother me that much, it just left me disappointed that we would lose whatever momemtum we had. Ultimately I think it was best for both parties, so I have even less reason to dislike him. I have followed him since from a distance as an SU fan because I couldn't care less about Buffalo or Jacksonville, but he has ties to the team I care about and had a hand in it's success as player and coach. I root for him a little because of those ties and the way they may reflect positively on us.

I don't care much about whether he is a jerk because I don't know how accurate the accounts are. Before he left, I recall multiple posts on here saying he treated people really well when they interacted with them. Then he leaves and others say he's a jerk. There's just not enough objective evidence for me to make a conclusion.

Goo

Good but not great. Too conservative for my liking. He had some head scratching punting decisions with both Buffalo and Jacksonville.
I think he’s a good coach too. Can’t say great until he wins something more meaningful.

Never said he wasn't a good coach...go back and read.

The winning record in year 2 in Buffalo was a bit of smoke and mirrors as they beat NE in last game of the season when NE sat almost all of their starters. He wasn't beating NE if NE plays their starters.

I admire what he was able to accomplish at SU, even if his record indicates he was a .500 coach. Doesn't change the facts that he is a jerk and a quitter for how he quit the Bils job.
He's certainly not a jerk, at least in my interactions with him. I had the privilege to speak with Doug a few times in informal settings and he could not have been more of a welcoming and engaging individual.

Exercising a $4mil release clause because you believed that the new people coming in would fire you does not make you a jerk, it makes you smart for understanding the business.

DM was always gracious and accomodating to me as a student reporter when he was team captain. Not all the football players were. Some liked to "bigtime" the student reporters.

This is why I pay no attention to the "jerk" comments. It seems most I've read are third person and only started after he left whereas most comments regarding good impressions are first person. It's possible he is a jerk, but I haven't seen enough evidence to conclude it.

It's like pretty much everyone. Some people like him, some don't. I bet you could say that about every coach SU has ever had.

I'm glad you have had positive interactions with him. I have met him twice and both my personal interactions were fine. He does come off as slightly socially akward.

I do know for a fact, from a family member who is a professor at the university, that Douggie has a very big ego and is not afraid to throw around the fact he was the football coach and to stay out of his way. I have heard multiple examples of him being a complete jerk to people who both teach and work at SU. Not going to go into all the details here but he can be less than pleasant when he doesnt get his way.

I also know for a fact that he skipped both a Camp Good Days and also a Carly's Club event in Buffalo that he agreed to attend with no real reason. These are 2 very important organizations raising money for cancer and cancer related issues that rely on local celebrities/athletes. I have a hard time seeing Boeheim break commitments like these as he seems to get it alot better than Marrone/\.

I'm sure there is a middle ground.

You can call his quitting the Bills what you want. At the end of the day, he quit and it took him a couple of years to find another HC gig. I'm sure Terry Pegula let the other owners know or he would have been the Jets coach.

Exactly. Some had great interactions with the guy, others not so much. I am sure there are also no faculty at SU with negative attitudes toward toward the football coach or with big egos :)

Pegula let the other coaches know what? Everyone knew he left the Bills and why. I think the Casullo comments probably hurt the chances with the Jets. However, some here said he would NEVER get a HC job again. He did. At the end of the day, he left with $4M in his pocket... got an asst. job for the next couple of years and is now an NFL coach again and in the playoffs. What a train wreck, huh?

This is good perspective.

I can't agree with this more.

Everyone has quit a job. This isn't like weasel Petrino or even Saban when they quit. He got paid 4 million to quit, immediately got another job, and is now a head coach in the NFL again. The comment about Pegula is an assumption, and nobody knows if any other owners would care about his opinion.

my nightmare is becoming more likely

what are the odds of marrone having anything to play for in the final week? steelers have the two worst teams in the league left.

i have to pray he's a meathead who doesn't believe in avoiding injury in a meathead.

marrone needs to be stupid for the bills to make the playoffs. and since he will only be smart when it causes me pain, he will be smart
sainthood bump

It's going to be funny when the Bills don't make the playoffs.

Congrats to FHCSUFHCBBCHCJJ Doug Marrone for leading the Jaguars to the playoffs, finishing the season 10-6, and ending this season with a career winning record as an NFL head coach!

The true genius was the win/win situation game 16 was for Coach Marrone. Keep the Bills out of the playoffs by losing - sweet revenge! Have the Bills get into the playoffs anyway - even stronger evidence of the strength of Marrone's rebuild years back on the Bills!
