Saint Dougie...

Or when Marrone is involved.

Orton retired.

True. Orton retired after making his $30M in the NFL and Marrone decided $4M was better than having to deal with another year with the Bills. Thus began the rage of the jilted Bills fans who have not seen a winning season since... and are likely not to see one this year.

Ok. Stay tuned.

Orton had already told that the new owners were backing Whaley and his plan not to retain Marrone's assistants and that Doug was going to take his option and leave. So instead of being "released" by the Bills he decided to retire. That was on Decenber 29th and Marrone was gone the next day or the day after. He would have come back had the Marrone program stayed in place. The writing was on the proverbial wall.

Eh, my post was an exercising in exposing the Marrone halo.

His post was about winning. Until it wasn't. Then it was about improvement.
Nah. You're cherry picking. He pointed out that Marrone has taken losing teams and improved them into winning teams. You don't like him, so you spin it differently. That's cool. We live in a culture where we spin numbers to fit our narratives.

NFL coach #1 -
2-14
6-10
13-3
3-6
Didn't have a career winning record until season 6. Won 3 SB's and is in the HOF.

NFL coach #2 -
3-12
9-7
10-6
14-2
Didn't have a career winning record until season 4. Won 2 SB's and is in the HOF.

NFL coach #3 -
6-10
7-9
7-9
11-5
Didn't have a career winning record until season 9. Has won 5 SB's.

Using your metric would have them as losing coaches at similar points in their career as Marrone currently is. Of course, drawing that conclusion that early in their careers would've been premature and the reality that Marrone has a winning record earlier in his NFL coaching career than any of them, does not mean he is even their equal.

College coach #1 -
4-6-1
2-9
6-5
6-5
Didn't have a career winning record until season 7.

College coach #2 -
4-8
8-5
5-7
8-5
Doug Marrone

College coach #3 -
8-6
10-3
4-8
4-8
This dude obviously forgot how to coach in season 3.

Clearly Marrone is better than coach #1, and, even though coach # 3 has a better record by 1 game, he's going the wrong direction, right? Of course not. Everyone on this board knows coach number 1 is coach Mac, and nobody in their right mind is taking Marrone over Babers (#3). One look at this year's recruiting class clears that one up for anyone that had any doubts.

Numbers sure are silly sometimes.

I hope that wasn't in response to my ridiculously long winded post. That's not at all what I was saying.
Lol, not at all... I didn't even read the thread.

I came home from a Christmas party, feeling merry, clicked on the thread and wrote it.

So is taking over historically bad (SU and Jags) or just habitually bad (Buffalo) and having winning seasons in the first or second year three times in a row a sign of being a good or bad coach?

Those are misleading choices, because what you're really asking is if he's a great coach, or the GREATEST coach.

Ad altare Marronei!

He already knew what the deal was, he's not stupid.

I work with a woman who is related to a former NFL teammate of Orton’s. That former teammate is good friends with him. So I have some inside info (for the first and probably last time in my posting career.)

He was retiring regardless. He had one foot in the retirement grave the entire season. He had a young family and the Bills had to talk him into playing for that one year.

If you watched the guy that year he was playing for the money. There are multiple examples of the guy protecting himself rather than giving 100% for a victory.

Even if none of that was true... Kyle Orton, Super Bowl QB. Please!

Yeah, Marrone sucks... ok.

Don’t sweat it, Finwad. If someone doesn’t like Doug for being thin skinned, gloomy, whatever, that is fine. Bottom line is the hate is about the dream job thing, and it’s stupid. Try working for Gross and Cantor and see how that dream job is, haters. And he did what Babers did in taking most of his staff with him, which is fine for Dino but made Marrone the second coming of Stalin. The guy is flawed but he can coach and it isn’t his fault that Gross hired an inept jackass like Shafer to replace him.

In other words you’re incapable of an honest answer

Not surprised

My bad. You posted so soon after I posted mine I thought maybe it came off wrong.

I don't know why you try to keep taking things to weird places.

This is the Doug Marrone celebration thread, dammit! Stop trying to sully it with your ridiculous personal vendettas.

I thought this was the Marrone mockery thread.

Prove it.

If so, I think you're in the wrong place.

Your whole narrative collapses and that's the best you can do, to assert people have asserted or implied the word "greatest" into this discussion.

Such a fraud.

At this point, I don't even remember what I was talking about in this thread.

Pax Marrone!

Well, all you bologna buys should take heart - even though Marrone's chances at NFLCOY dropped with today's loss, there's an extremely high chance I'll miss out on a fantasy trophy thanks in part to Blake Bortles.

Karmic justice? Nah, I don't believe in that bologna.

Did you see the San Fran fumble recover by Jags, ruled not a fumble forward motion stopped even though it was not? Or all the penalties that were quick thrown flags like the head butt that was a guy jawing with a guy not butting. Jimmy G is real deal.and the niners are a playoff team next year with him, but the Jags in spite of normal bortles still we're shafted numerous times today. Sort of like Jimmy G is the new Brady. And the Niners will.become the new Patriots
