Scratching my head...

no it wasn't 21 - 17 would not have put us in a better position to win the game.
Yes it would. Please see my post above. But you are stubborn, so I am done with this discussion.

It was actually from the USC 49. I think you're thinking of Gregg Williams. If HCDM keeps this up, I'm going to start calling him Dougg.
I thought it might have been a 49 yard field goal attempt into the wind

Wrong. It was from the 32.

2nd and 6 at SYR 47 Ryan Nassib pass complete to Alec Lemon for 4 yards to the USC 49.
3rd and 2 at USC 49 Ryan Nassib pass incomplete to Marcus Sales.
4th and 2 at USC 49 Riley Dixon punt for 49 yards for a touchback.

Different play? I remember McDonough questioning why we didn't kick a long field goal...

There was none. It was the right call. Beside people who question both calls are schizophrenic. One call was aggressive and one conservative. Hard to dislike both unless you are just frustrated.
Actually, the fact that one was aggressive and one was conservative was my own biggest concern.

I disagreed with going for two but certainly understood that they might be aggressive under the circumstances. However, if you are going to be aggressive there, why do you go ultra conservative on the 4th down play ? That did not make any sense to me...

Time and position dictate a lot of these decisions but those were so close in time that it just did not make sense to me.

Putting those issues aside, we have definitely upgraded this team and are on the right track.

Yep, different play. The punt was shanked and was a 12 yard punt...
1st and 10 at USC 33 Prince-Tyson Gulley rush for 1 yard to the USC 32.
2nd and 9 at USC 32 Ryan Nassib sacked by Morgan Breslin for a loss of 6 yards to the USC 38.
3rd and 15 at USC 38 Ryan Nassib pass complete to Beckett Wales for 6 yards to the USC 32.
4th and 9 at USC 32 Riley Dixon punt for 12 yards, punt out-of-bounds at the USC 20.

Going for 2 isn't being aggressive. Apples and oranges. One was being too conservative and one was a math miscalculation. The wrong decision in both cases.

That was in the first quarter. The score was 0-0. It's far, far worse to not go for it on 4th and 2 from the USC 49 down 12 in the fourth quarter.

The play I was referring to was earlier...much earlier... We punted from the 32 and it resulted in 12 net yards.

Yep. 100% correct.

i dont think we were chasing pts.. i thought we were trying to ride the momentum and put the pressure on USC. normally i kick , but it think in that game going for two was fine. but i also thought we were really stressing usc the whole 2nd half , punting down late was the wrong call.

but again if nassib makes a better throw at the end of the half the game is tied and we never go for two.

I took the decision to go for 2 like this: We were down 5 anyway. Going for the XP still puts us at two possessions down. If we get the 2, then we are within a FG. It was worth the gamble, IMHO. It was a poorly executed play, but I don't disagree with the decision to try and get the two. Our other attempts at 2 were good plays, especially the last one, but Nassib either overthrew the Wales, or Wales didn't turn soon enough. The bottom line is the play was there. Wales was wide open. We didn't finish.

As for the other disputed decision on going for it on 4th down, I was disappointed we didn't go for it. I thought our punting killed us until Doug made the change. In my opinion, I have more confidence in my offense to get me the 2 yards than I do with our horrid SPT to put USC deep into their own territory.

Scoreboard...7 likes to 0.
I may have been a bit harsh after consuming more than my fair share of bourbon. After re-reading your post it was far more reasoned than many of the other fair-weather fans here.

While watching the replay of the first punt from the 32, they were showing Hackett on the sideline when the offense was on the field. As soon as the punting team was called on the field he slapped his hands in frustration. IMO ... he had a play called and wanted to go for it and seemed shocked to see the punt team get called on.

Going for two, at that point in the game, stunned me. If we kick the extra point and if USC's next scoring play is a field goal we're only down by 7. We won't be forced into a low % two point try. To me it was less an aggressive move, more of a defensive move as in we aren't likely to to score another TD. In the 3rd quater it was far too early to take a big chance and take an almost sure point off the board. It was, as it turns out a momentum killer for us, and a lift to USC at that point in the game.

However, it wasn't the calls that were bad, it was the execution. The first on side kick was probably the worst that I have ever seen. Then the next one wasn't much better.
Remember that the onside kick rules have changed. The successful kicks from the past decade should just about all result in a fair catch these days.

There will likely be a preferred way to kick them, but it'll be awhile until there is. Until then, just about all attempts will fail.
