First off, I love the conclusions that people have drawn from the scrimmage who weren't there. It's like a bad case of the "telephone game". Clean it up folks and stop thinking the SU football world is ending. From what I saw, it is not. Not even close. It's a scrimmage. They play each other every day in practice and likely know a good portion of their plays. We don't want either unit beating up on the other.

Fort Drum was nice. There were a few hundred spectators. Weather couldn't have been better. Not too warm and there was a nice breeze (many people had hoodies/pants on).

WRs... Ben Lewis is a stud. The kid has magnets for hands and was making plays. Had maybe 4-5 catches, most in traffic. Will see the field this year. Sales had a big drop, but after that was better. Kobena had a few nice plays, still has crazy speed. He still runs to upright and north to south. Needs to work on his YAC moves. West made several nice grabs and will be a huge key to this year if this group can be a weakness or strength. Lemon was back in Syracuse getting treatment which allowed Lewis to get alot more reps. They are both possession receivers. Out of all of them, Lewis had by far the biggest day. Kudos to the staff for identifying him at a summer camp. NW will tell us alot about this group. Sales and Lemon would be my starters with Kobena, West and Lewis in the next group.

TE's... David Stevens had a great day. I think he had 3 td's, one of which was a short slant across the middle that he took to the house. Really impressed with Ron Thompson. He is all of 266 lbs. He is very smooth and appears to have great hands. Had several catches. Wales was good too. Beaulieax dropped an easy one and continues to remain a project. Josh Parris had one grab but was pretty quiet. Cu tler had a few nice grabs. Really pulling for that kid. He's gone through hell with his knee. Put me on the bullish side for this group.

RB's... Jerome Smith certainly passes the look test. He didn't do anything great today, but he will be more than serviceable this season. Missed a few blocking assignments. PTG was quiet. Ran mainly delayed sweeps and it appeared that they wanted to use him for screens, but none developed. AAM looks way better. Lost most of his tire, could lose some more. I think him and Smith are closer than some of you might think. Broyld is a stud. Was in the backfield quite a few times and also lined up on the outside, which is where he be mainly be IMO. Get that kid the ball in space. Playmaker? He is one. Zero question on that. GM is no doubt the quickest back and has the breakaway speed that we've needed all these years. I think it is a toss-up if the staff RS him this year. He is completely different from the other backs slated to play this year. He is quick, all the times he had the ball the OLine collapsed, but you can see the burst.

QB's... It is Nassib's show. Let's hope he stays healthy. Still has a ridiculous zip on his throws, but is also extremely accurate. Didn't see him throw any deep balls. Loeb was the best QB today, and would clearly be the next guy in if Nassib went down. Is very stationary while he sits back to throw, but has great accuracy. Also had a few plays to show his wheels on designed QB runs. I am optimistic if he had to take over. Kinder makes way too many mistakes and will remain the #1 scout QB for the D. Hunt is the one I'm pulling for the most. He has a great arm and great feet, just needs to learn the offense more and cut down on his mistakes. The competition between Hunt, Allen and Austin for the 2014 gig will be fun to watch. Broyld did not take any reps at QB that I saw. He could see some wildcat action this year, but he's too good to not be lined up on the outside as a mismatch.

OL... They were sloppy at times. Really impressed by the freshmen (Knopp, Palmer, Emerich). No doubt here, we need Pugh back. Hickey isn't quite on the same level as Pugh, but has the ability to man his position and protect Nassib's back side. Macky is fun to watch. He has great heart and hustle and has great control of the line and the reads. OL wasn't as bad as the paper said since a "sack" was once the QB got touched. Most of those times were on slaps as the QB stepped into the pocket and away from the pressure. Many of them wouldn't have been sacks in a real game. NW starters will be Hickey, Chibane, Macky, Trudo, Lou.

DL... Huge. They are really big. Z Jones, Walls and Raymon are monsters. Great to see that size. MPB is really quick, as is Simmons. Rob Welsh made a few really nice plays. Goggins got to lay a few sticks. Bromley was out. Robinson was pretty quiet, as was Manley. I am very bullish on this group. It will be nice to see legitimate size on our DLine for once. This should help the blitz schemes. Goggins, Crume, Bromley, MPB would be my starters. Sharpe, Z Jones, Walls, Robinson/Simmons would be the next group.

LB... Dyshawn Davis was the D MVP of the scrimmage. He had at least 2-3 sacks and a pick, but was flying all over the ball. If this is how he plays this year, we are in for a treat. Diabate was also great. Great move by the staff giving him a shot in the middle. He has stepped up and has added on some serious muscle. Lynch and Spruill also played good. Vaughn is another body to fill in the gaps and will play alot. Coker and Vigille were quiet from what I saw. I love this group. My starters would be Davis, Diabate and Spruill. Lynch will be in on all blitz scenarios.

DB... Deepest unit and most impressive. Reddish is great, but I'm telling you right now that we have an absolute stud in Whigham. He was making plays left and right. Kudos to the staff for hanging onto him at the end. Esk is an imposing safety and was a ball hawk today. With Shamarko out, it gave the younger guys alot of reps. We have a legitimate 3 deep at every position. My starters would be Lyn, Reddish, Esk and Shamarko. Closely behind them would be Whigham, Anderson/Morgan, Desir and Wilkes. All in all, the size and speed that we have in the secondary is great. I hope that we can cut down on some of the mistakes seen yesterday. It's not only nice to see depth, it's also really nice to see quality depth at every position.

ST's... Norton has a great leg. Punts were inconsistent, but I thought Fisher edged out Dixon. Gulley fielded most punts.

A few other tidbits...

Gross not there. Frazier was.

Coaches were loud throughout scrimmage. Great competitions between the staff you can easily tell. It is great to see. Daoust is a fun coach to watch. He gets right in there with the DL and is very supportive. Morrison and Henderson were great pickups and have already made their marks IMO. Very energetic and the players seem to love them. Marrone was observing for the most part. Some of you might be pissed that he wasn't waving around an and wearing war paint on the sidelines.

Fundraising going well...

Recruiting is going great, will leave it at that. ;)

A few injuries that I won't mention here.

General addressed the players after the scrimmage. Had them give 3 hoo-ah's, then 3 more hoo-ah's. It was loud. Then he and Marrone walked over and handed out 6 helmets to the people who helped make this happen. At the address to the crowd at the end, had them give 3 more hoo-ah's. That was cool. Don't be surprised to hear the team doing that before games this year. Wounded soldier who lost his leg last yr was honored by the general and DM.

From what I gathered, great experience for the players and the staff this week. Will likely continue this in future years. "Operation Orange Partnership".

Players are big. Kudos to the S&C staff. Complete makeover. This is the biggest SU team that I can ever remember.

At least 85-90 helmets on the field today. Must be nice for the staff to have a full field.

The whole freshmen class & JUCO transfers are impressive physically, all long and good feet. The staff really brought in some gems. Knapp and Emerich looked solid in the 2nd team. All the DB's too (DVM, Ford, Whig, WM = Fab 4). MPB, Walls, Z Jones, Raymon are specimens. They haven't played a live game-day snap yet, but this is yet another reason why the star system is lousy. The coaching staff has their own criteria that they use when looking at a kid, which allows them to find these relatively unheralded recruits. Based on looks and scrimmage play, this is going to be a great class to watch.

All in all, team was somewhat sloppy today at times, but also showed glimpses of what we could become. We have another week of camp, then a week to plan for NW. I am confident that this team will be ready for NW. I am stoked for this season to begin. In the meantime, some of you need to stop trying so hard to find the negatives on this team. Step away from the ledge, I really like what I see so far.

Great post"...thanks Rocco

So after buying tix to NW and getting pumped up, I then had buyers remorse from all of the negativity and now after reading this I can't wait to watch the team in a couple of weeks. Thanks - great report!!!

Great post Rocco. But it made ne smile because it takes the pendulum far to the other side of negative. After reading your post it seems like everything is great across the board and we are in for a 9 or 10 win season. I think we are somewhere between the rosy and the sky is falling.

Thanks for the details though.

More people tend to be negative, I'll be more positive because that's what I saw yesterday. ;)

Rocco, just curious to know what you thought of the play calling during the scrimmage? With DM going out of his way to be secretive since last season, do you think they were trying to keep things plain with the play calling since the scrimmage was open to the press and some spectators?

Thanks for the great report!

I've thought that the PS coverage of fall camp has been terrific, but the PS has NOTHING on the quality of that report, Rocco!

Very, very encouraged by what you had to say about the OL / WR.

Just a phenomenal, incredibly detailed write up.

Let's Go Orange!!!

Damn it Bees, now I'm back on the ledge. Who wants my tix on the 40 yard line?

:p

Some folks negativity (and I'm not talking about the sky is falling type) is based upon Marrone own words, Rahmes article or feedback from people who were there and/or there often.

It is good to hear a very positive report though. Can't wait for NW and seeing the gang again pregame and post game after the win.

Post of the year. Awesome stuff Roc. Thanks for taking time to post that. Great read.

The big question will be answered soon enough......Go Ryan go!

Hey Rocco--follow up question about Ben Lewis. First of all, great to hear--we need all of the offensive playmakers we can get, and it sounds like Lewis might be a hidden gem type of pickup.

From your write up above, it seems pretty clear that Lewis has good hands and seems to get open. Can you provide any more information about him? What type of receiver is he [i.e., speed guy, possession receiver, etc.]? How are his wheels? Is he physical or more of a downfield guy?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

He is a possession receiver for sure. Doesn't have blazing speed, just runs crisp routes. He also hauled in a 25-30 yard corner lob in double coverage for a TD. He just has the ability to get open, but he has really great hands. He should see the field this year...

Damn it Bees, now I'm back on the ledge. Who wants my tix on the 40 yard line?

:p

Another thing that I forgot to note is the players' comraderie with each other. Looked like they were having a blast, especially the DLine and DB's. Yet another "positive"... turned the corner from the end of last season to now.

More people tend to be negative, I'll be more positive because that's what I saw yesterday. ;)

Initially you thought the offense looked sloppy...did it improve over the course of the scrimmage or did you chalk it up to the defense being ahead of the offense at this stage in training?

When you and I were on the field last year for Rutgers I noticed that the linemen of Rutgers was noticeable bigger...it will be nice to see Cuse start to measure up.

I'd say the D won the battle. The O didn't show alot, so it's hard to judge.

Cuse will no question have one of the biggest, if not the biggest DLine in the BE this year. And we're deep. That Rutgers game was so frustrating...

Keep 'em. We will beat NW. I didn't say get on the ledge. It's somewhere in between.

Some folks negativity (and I'm not talking about the sky is falling type) is based upon Marrone own words, Rahmes article or feedback from people who were there and/or there often.

It is good to hear a very positive report though. Can't wait for NW and seeing the gang again pregame and post game after the win.

You got to think DM is trying to do the same thing JB does with the b-ball team prior to the season starting. It's a way to keep motivating your team to get better.

I'd say the D won the battle. The O didn't show alot, so it's hard to judge.

Cuse will no question have one of the biggest, if not the biggest DLine in the BE this year. And we're deep. That Rutgers game was so frustrating...

While not loaded with stars that will make a lot of plays themselves, what this huge DL will be responsible for is keeping blockers off our LB's which allows them to use their speed (along with the safeties and DB's) to make plays.

Thanks Rocco for the report. I'm so glad I found this place! I live in NJ and work 2 miles from the Rutgers campus. It's so nice to get quality intel and opinions. I'm a season ticket holder and can't wait to start my annual treks up north for the games. Do many of you tailgate together? I used to tailgate before my lot became a garage and the price went from $33 to $100. Sorry to go off topic. Thanks again!

My condolences as to where you live and work.

Yes many posters tailgate in the closest corner of the Fine Lot. Anywhere between 30-100 of us depending upon a number of factors.

Also agree, great, very informative post Rocco! I spoke with someone who participated yesterday and in no way was the play book opened up for the scrimmage. The purpose of this scrimmage was mainly to see how guys looked in predetermined situations and also to determine where guys (mostly 2nd and 3rd unit people) fit on the depth chart. As you can imagine, the players and coaches are exhausted mentally and physically at this point - especially throwing in the military training they've had. They begin their days at 6:30 and don't get done until after 10:00 and that's been seven days a week since early August.

The team has two more scrimmages to put in the NW offensive game plan and now that the players mostly know where they fit they can recharge and focus on getting ready for Sept. 1st. You can say what you want about DM, but he always has the team ready to start the season.

What a awesome story about Fort Drum. Wow.
Its one of the biggest army bases out there. It really is a great fan and recruiting tool as well.
Being a syracuse fan who spent 4 years at fort drum its touching.

I remember when the 06-07 basketball team visited there to do things non basketball related.
I had season tix that year always a fun drive after a long day to drive down to the dome and back up to the base at 11 oclock, especially in a snowstorm.

Not to mention, we've got two full weeks to now prepare the NW game plan. The coaches closed practices to the public / media, and intel has been tough to come by dating back to last spring.

I'm betting that NW is going to see some things that they aren't adequately prepared for on September 1st.
