Doesn't seem to be super athletic. Mostly skilled.

In the highlight, at the end of his dunk, it looks like he smacks the ball before the other guy inbounds it. Not gonna fly at any level.

Hope that isn't an indication of his attitude towards coaching. If it is, could be some issues if JB is the coach.
Not athletic and a possible attitude problem. Thanks for the scouting report. Really looking forward to the future now.

I wouldn’t call him unathletic. However., he did seem a bit one dimensional. His points came either via a dunk or 3,point shots. And he’s not shy about shooting 3s. He appears to be a wing more than a two guard because I didn’t see much creativity as a balhandler. He needs to add weight and diversity to his game.

You see this in HS at every level- doing that is not a sign of a uncoachable player. He hasn't shown to have issues like this to date in other games. Take it easy on the hyperbole.

We will see what we have next year.

Gotta also say really not impressed with Gayle as much anymore. Good player but doesn't look like a kid that will be an impact player as a frosh. Maybe in year two or three.

Could be hyperbole or could be a sign. Just thought I’d point it out. And you do not see it every day in HS.

Slapping the ball specifically? No. Jawing, trashtalking and posturing? Yes you do. Even in rural single A games. Come on now if you don't think it's every game you haven't played. It's almost always more visually present in bigger showcase or rivalry games too

Point is there haven't been concerns to date with this kid and thus its nothing more than overkill in a big game like this. I also don't see him starting as a frosh either.

We need some of this tbh. Our teams the past few seasons have been way too passive and nice.

These kids are just copying what the NBA guys do. How many of the biggest stars complain incessantly about every single call. And the refs do nothing about it.

Gayle looked terrible in the game, didn't do much of anything. Doesn't move well without the ball.

Exactly. Was surprised how poor he has looked given he looked like a guy shooting up the ranks for a while in 2020.

Not sure how accurate the rankings are with Covid. Lots of variables at play.

Yeah rankings aside his tape looked really good for a while. Granted highlights are deceiving for sure. Right now he looks more like 100-150 range than 63. Same could be said for Bunch.

He's extremely athletic.

But the knocks on him are that he's:
  • A stationary jump shooter without much other perimeter versatility [i.e., lack of handle, passing, driving]
  • Doesn't work hard on the glass
  • Plays like a disinterested defender
So, I think people need to temper their expectations. He's got the right size for a 3 in our system, but it remains to be seen how the effort level will translate. The ability to run and jump can be a big advantage on the court, but it's neutralized if you stand around, watch the ball instead of chasing rebounds, and shy away from contact. And despite his ability from three, he seems more like a streak shooter than someone who is a marksman.

Perfect description as we are seeing hopefully with the transformation of Benny. Definitely need to be proactive instead of reactive and eventually the game will slow down where you can make a major impact.

Watching his game he reminds me of a slightly poorer man's Malachi Richardson. Looking forward to seeing him on the court with Jesse and Benny next year.

Started watching Bunch’s Wasatch team play IMG mid-way through 3rd quarter. He made 2-3 from 3 one from pretty deep from top of the key. His miss was not pretty (air ball).

Definitely a wing and NOT a guard (definitely needs to work on his handle) although he had a nice mid range jumper after getting past his guy. I think he’s at 11pts. Just under a minute left.

Game was good, although IMG pulled away the last few minutes. Definitely NOT impressed with Roddy Gayle at all.

A bit limited by the fact that NIBC doesn't always post the box scores for every game, but they've now posted 6 of their 7 NIBC games for Wasatch and his team's numbers are as follows:

He’s a classic SU player with those three descriptors.

This is a weird era in college hoops. I thought the evolution of players was ongoing—bigger, stronger, more skilled youth. But the overall quality of play in college feels way down. And now we are seeing recruits going to high major programs who aren’t even averaging impressive numbers against high school competition. Bizarre. Only thing i can think of is that the Steph Curry effect has changed the landscape to the negative, and that social media is a misleading recruit PR tool.

I thought Bunch had turned a corner and was putting up big numbers lately, but a 8 point average, half an assist and three rebounds… feels like any Starter should get that by accident.

How are you guys watching his games? ‘Pay per view’ through the school’s site?

Still first half and Bunch has made 3-4 3’s and a dunk for 11 points. He’s the freshman that will start next year.
I’d be shocked if he’s more than a solid bench contributor next season. But I hope you’re right. I don’t have a good sense of the potential for these 2022 recruits. (I knew Kadary would be a contributor from day 1 because I’d watched some of his Brewster games online.) I’m assuming we’ll bring in 2-3 guys from the transfer portal. I also think there’s a chance Buddy could be back for a fifth year.

As someone who plays high school ball, this is nothing lol. There's a lot worse that could be done and said than slapping the ball
