Bell’s blocks were all of the chasedown variety. He had little interest in half court defense. Not sure if serious. Chris Bell's highlights show a bunch of awesome blocks.

Right but if you show them on a highlight reel you could say “this guy has amazing hustle”Bell’s blocks were all of the chasedown variety. He had little interest in half court defense.
Yeah, this is a very nice pickup. He has good upside. I like it.He was ranked the #24 player in the class of 2024 by On3. I am sure someone will note that this doesn’t count because they don’t like On3.
I don’t put a lot of faith into the ranking by the recruiting services but I do in the offers players get. Tyler was offered by Duke, UConn, Bama. That is all I need to know.
This guy can play. I am delighted to see him in Orange.
Hard to take too much away from stats for a guy who played spot minutesRegarding Betsy and rebounding, as a 6’8 225 player, his offensive rebounding percentage was 5.1% and his defensive rebounding was 10.4%. A comparable player on last year’s team in rebounding % would be JJ Starling.
His block percentage was 1.4%, getting 5 in 380 minutes on the season. Not exactly the profile of an athletic big man. His steal numbers are unimpressive as well, getting exactly 1 all season long.
I think he could be good depth, maybe he got his freshman jitters out as someone suggested upthread.
In the other hand, we would have been ecstatic getting him as a high school recruit two years ago. Maybe he’s developed in his 10 minutes a game at Cincinnati.
I hope they look overseas and can land a hidden gem.Just need another center and we good to go
It feels like this has been said every year for about 5 yearsThis is the deepest team I can recall
That’s the things about rate stats like this. They are intended to be predictive over relatively small amounts of playing time. Google suggests that block% is actually predictive of future results in as little as 200-300 minutes. Unfortunately, for a player like Betsey, playing about 10 minutes a game, that’s almost a whole season… But that’s what we have.Hard to take too much away from stats for a guy who played spot minutes
At the SF we are the opposite of where we were last year. There was no backup plan for Bell at 3 last year, The expectation was that he would make a jump, but the opposite happened. Ended up with Taylor filling all those mins. This is the deepest team I can recall
I really like this pickup and I really like the overall off-season.
However, I still think we need a pure center to round out the roster.
Good shooter who appears to have some ability on the offensive glass. Not a “plus” athlete. Sorta reminds me of Shumpert.
Shoots over people, which I like. We really needed another shooter, so I’m happy with this pick up.
It still blows my mind that Red hasn't added any coaches. Hopefully, he is on stealth mode with that too. There is no evidence that the current staff can coach defense. That brings up my second thought, do we have the coaching staff to make young players better?
Was a liability on defense.Hate to do this, but people just keep repeating 3 and D like it's fact...what evidence do people have that suggested he plays good D?
He certainly can get better, he's very young still, but it would need to be a massive improvement.
But his metrics are basically even with Chris Bell.
Here's a post from a Cincy board:
"I struggled with Betsey this year. Good shooter, but his lack of athleticism is what definitely kept him off the floor. Couldn’t beat anyone off the dribble or when mismatched couldn’t really go into the post either and was a liability on defense. Have a hard time seeing him being a top contributor/starter in any major league without that athleticism."
He can shoot though, I'm 100% down with that. It's going to be a huge help when we need to knock down a shot. But the D thing is, by all accounts, a work in progress. On top of the fact, Red hasn't shown the ability to make anyone an elite defender unless we get them that way.
Are we at a max for on staff coaches? If we need to get rid of a coach to bring in a defensive minded assistant coach, who is the least valuable on staff that we can afford to let go?It still blows my mind that Red hasn't added any coaches. Hopefully, he is on stealth mode with that too. There is no evidence that the current staff can coach defense.
