Are we at a max for on staff coaches? If we need to get rid of a coach to bring in a defensive minded assistant coach, who is the least valuable on staff that we can afford to let go?

NCAA rules allow NCAA Division I basketball teams to have a head coach and six other "countable" coaches. This includes three full-time assistant coaches, a director of basketball operations, two additional assistant coaches, and any graduate assistants. The two additional assistant coaches can engage in coaching activities like skill instruction and game planning, but they cannot recruit off-campus.

We have:
Griff
Engelstad
Straughn

Corasaniti is DOBO

Kline is GM

General Manager does not typically count against coaching limits in NCAA basketball. If their primary role involves coaching or direct supervision of student-athletes in a practice or game setting, they might be counted as a coach. If their role is primarily administrative or focuses on areas like team budget, recruiting, and player personnel, they would likely not count against coaching limits.

We can add up to two "non-recruiting" asst coaches.

Good shooter who appears to have some ability on the offensive glass. Not a “plus” athlete. Sorta reminds me of Shumpert.

Shoots over people, which I like. We really needed another shooter, so I’m happy with this pick up.

Good comparison although watching more of his cincy tape the guy I see is a beefier version of Braswell in terms of style of play. Also highly rated kid who went to a decent program but one that he may have had far higher expectations of his first year. Still has the talent but now hits the reset button with a slower trajectory to having an impact at this level.

If this staff can put last year to rest, and show they know what they are doing when the lights come on, the money train thus keeps coming , then maybe we’ve taken some heat off of what the 2026 freshman class looks like and we can have better retention with most losses being to the pros.

Kline‘s on the road recruiting a lot.

I've probably seen as much or more of Betsey as anyone else. Pretty much every game. When Red said he wanted a little more size at SF that could hopefully shoot Betsey is who came to mind for me. His freshman stats are horrible. But he basically forced his way into playing time and ended up 9th in minutes on a team with basically 10 guys averaging 10+. He took a lot of 3's with guys in his face. Mainly because he ended up with the ball and had to make a play, that accounts a little for his 3FG which has lots of room to improve. His other problem at UC was he essentially played 2G when he did play which forced him to the high wings most of the time instead of along the baseline. He isn't coming in to start but he will have no fear matching up against any player in the country. Top 50 recruit with HS offers from Duke, Kansas and UConn. The upside potential is tremendous and he provides a little needed size/width for this season. He'll be part of the rotation and I'd guess 10-15 minutes minimum.
Good to know!

Waiting for someone to say whatever he’s only #221 with on3. I gotta give props to this kid for coming here to fight for time and for the staff for finding him.

The ratings sites are trash don’t get me wrong but For reference this kid has similar ratings as Mr Chris Bell. So basically we got 2 guys at the 3 or maybe 3 guys if you count the Frosh or combo guys that are all going or better than Bell and Taylor.

Sometimes I just don’t think people realize how much of black hole the 3 was last year.
I guess “someone” could just point out the hypocrisy in touting his ‘top 25’ HS rankings while denying the portal transfer number. Someone could also point out the illogic of constantly whining about the “trash” ‘low’ rating number but then in the same sentence saying he has a similar rating as Bell….

Wait no longer!

Whatevs, as the kids say.

Interesting player. We would have been thrilled to have signed him out of HS, and now he’s coming off an unspectacular freshman college season. Slow release, but so what, if he gets the shots off that he should be taking. We don’t see in the highlights how (if) he works to get his space and opportunities. I hope he’s not just a thicker Bell. He looks sturdy, but maybe his heft doesn’t actually help him in the kind of game he plays. People here seem to want guys who aren’t ’skinny,’ but if he’s not a physical player anyway, maybe that weight just makes him slower.

Interesting comments from our Cincy expert, about him being out of position last year. Good comparison upthread about his shot looking like Naz Reid’s.

Would be nice if he sticks for a couple of years and develops into kind of a DNich-type player.

I mean we just had a player leave who not only got an offer from Kansas but actually played there. Granted there was a serious injury involved, but moral of the story is actual performance matter more than offers.

I bet there a lot of schools saying over the years…. But he had a Syracuse offer or played at Syracuse.

This roster has a lot of length which can lead to deflections and run outs. Last year we had very little length. With length you can put pressure on the ball without being all over your man. It helps to keep guys in front of you. Having guys behind you who can also block shots, should really help our defense to improve.

I just hope he plays more guys, and plays them for shorter stretches of time. I don't want to see 12 or 16 minutes straight from any guy. I prefer 8-10, then take a blow until the next TV time out. This is how you keep guys engaged and playing hard.

Was this reply meant for me? I didn’t say anything about “offers.”

I thought it was the opposite last season. To me it seemed he would pull players too soon when they were playing well. It looked like Red had set rotations regardless of how each player was performing.

With God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.
The best WKRP episode. Les and his shy and quirky rendition of what was happening and Dr Johnny Fever deadpanning that the mall had just been bombed by Turkeys.
Makes me want to look for that episode online tonight

My other favorite was the one where they wrote and recorded a jingle for a funeral home.
That scary funeral director just rocking with the jingle. Ferryman I think was the name.

I think it’s terrible, but it keeps coming back to mind. So maybe it’s good, and terrible? :(
We could just nickname Nait George “Heaven.” A good passer who is “Heavenly.”
George Burns did star in Heaven Can Wait, so…

Having a GM means having someone to achieve the basics in roster management.

Retain the most talented and productive guys on the roster- check
Bring in a high level freshman class that is high ranked and should contribute day 1 - check
Fill in the weaknesses with strengths through the portal - check
Complete the roster with both talent and program fits - check.

What’s left is coaching to do their part. Alex has done his.

spot on. Red's substitutions were God awful. He was really bad

You’re right and we all saw this. My take though is that the one player you gotta leave in the game whether we’re rolling or getting crushed is the point guard. We didn’t have one of those that could hold up against P5 play last year.

Instead JJ was left in for “consistency” which meant he was in way too many mins to try to be floor general which just meant too many shots. Then everyone else was rotating randomly mostly cuz they were getting beat defensively. Just was a disaster.

Maybe it’s just me but I expect the 1 to play about 36-38 min. Only coming out a min or two per half due to being extremely winded which I don’t think will happen much with George.

The 2&3 to be whoever is shooting better and has a spark, and the 4&5 to be by committee. With Donnie gotta adjust that cuz I believe he needs to be on the court as much as possible but you guys get the gist.

Also setting a price point for a player before the portal season starts. It’s a really bad slippery slope if you even overpay for 1 guy beyond what you think they’re worth. You do that once and it’s gonna keep happening.

I want Cuse to win but I prefer what our programs are doing this year. I feel like we’re Sticking to our guns with what players are worth or not worth. Hoops lately but most notably Fran Brown telling Pena to take a walk and then bringing in a ton of other portal talent in other positions with that money.

George played 36 minutes per game last year. I’d like him to have two 1.5 minutes rests per half, optimally around TV timeouts.
