He was ranked the #24 player in the class of 2024 by On3. I am sure someone will note that this doesn’t count because they don’t like On3.

I don’t put a lot of faith into the ranking by the recruiting services but I do in the offers players get. Tyler was offered by Duke, UConn, Bama. That is all I need to know.

This guy can play. I am delighted to see him in Orange.
Yeah, this is a very nice pickup. He has good upside. I like it.

Regarding Betsy and rebounding, as a 6’8 225 player, his offensive rebounding percentage was 5.1% and his defensive rebounding was 10.4%. A comparable player on last year’s team in rebounding % would be JJ Starling.

His block percentage was 1.4%, getting 5 in 380 minutes on the season. Not exactly the profile of an athletic big man. His steal numbers are unimpressive as well, getting exactly 1 all season long.

I think he could be good depth, maybe he got his freshman jitters out as someone suggested upthread.

In the other hand, we would have been ecstatic getting him as a high school recruit two years ago. Maybe he’s developed in his 10 minutes a game at Cincinnati.
Hard to take too much away from stats for a guy who played spot minutes

I've probably seen as much or more of Betsey as anyone else. Pretty much every game. When Red said he wanted a little more size at SF that could hopefully shoot Betsey is who came to mind for me. His freshman stats are horrible. But he basically forced his way into playing time and ended up 9th in minutes on a team with basically 10 guys averaging 10+. He took a lot of 3's with guys in his face. Mainly because he ended up with the ball and had to make a play, that accounts a little for his 3FG which has lots of room to improve. His other problem at UC was he essentially played 2G when he did play which forced him to the high wings most of the time instead of along the baseline. He isn't coming in to start but he will have no fear matching up against any player in the country. Top 50 recruit with HS offers from Duke, Kansas and UConn. The upside potential is tremendous and he provides a little needed size/width for this season. He'll be part of the rotation and I'd guess 10-15 minutes minimum.

thanks Cincy for your first hand observations of Betsey. There has been so much second guessing and negativityon the board I went from being initially excited about the pick up to feeling kind of depressed with the negative comments, to now feeling a lot more optimistic. This whole portal transfer thing comes down to trust in the assessment and the efforts that Red and his staff are doing.

That’s the things about rate stats like this. They are intended to be predictive over relatively small amounts of playing time. Google suggests that block% is actually predictive of future results in as little as 200-300 minutes. Unfortunately, for a player like Betsey, playing about 10 minutes a game, that’s almost a whole season… But that’s what we have.

On the other hand, a 19 year old kid absolutely can improve, and sometimes in leaps and bounds.

That’s true of any player. My favorite example is Al Horford. Horford attempted 29 threes in his first 7 seasons in the NBA. Last season at 38 years old, he attempted 314 threes and made them at a .363 clip, which wasn’t close to his best percentage season. He’s a rare exception, but players can make changes even at advanced ages. Horford suddenly became an effective volume three point shooter in his age 29(!) season.

But back to Betsey… His extremely low blocks and steals and quite low rebounding are actually who is was as a player last season. They aren’t necessarily predictive of his future, but he has to make a determined effort to improve in those categories… it’s not going to just happen.

Al Horford is exceptional for a reason.

Lots to work with here. I agree 100% with Tom, any player that had the offers he had coming out of HS can play. Most frosh take a step back. It is rare for them to step on the court and do well. Soph and Junior years are when you typically see major improvement. I expect this kid to play and to do well. Excellent get by Red and the staff.

Check out these dates of when we got guys last year:
-Eddie April 2nd
-Davis April 15
-Carlos April 24
-Lucas Taylor June 4
-Petar August 16

This year:
-Donnie/JJ dual announcement to return March 25th
-Kyle March 27
-Kingz April 2
-George April 4
-Suare April 6
-Zephir April 16
-Betsey May 2

Good shooter who appears to have some ability on the offensive glass. Not a “plus” athlete. Sorta reminds me of Shumpert.

Shoots over people, which I like. We really needed another shooter, so I’m happy with this pick up.

He was offered out of HS last year by Duke, Kansas, UConn, Michigan St, Auburn, Alabama, Pitino.

Has to be something there, hopefully it develops and not worth worrying about him being lightly used as a freshman. I assume a relatively cheap piece to add, so why not.

Hate to do this, but people just keep repeating 3 and D like it's fact...what evidence do people have that suggested he plays good D?

He certainly can get better, he's very young still, but it would need to be a massive improvement.

But his metrics are basically even with Chris Bell.

Here's a post from a Cincy board:

"I struggled with Betsey this year. Good shooter, but his lack of athleticism is what definitely kept him off the floor. Couldn’t beat anyone off the dribble or when mismatched couldn’t really go into the post either and was a liability on defense. Have a hard time seeing him being a top contributor/starter in any major league without that athleticism."

He can shoot though, I'm 100% down with that. It's going to be a huge help when we need to knock down a shot. But the D thing is, by all accounts, a work in progress. On top of the fact, Red hasn't shown the ability to make anyone an elite defender unless we get them that way.
Was a liability on defense.

Perfect fit for Syracuse.

I’ve liked him since he came on the radar as an SU recruit while playing AAU Bball. I was surprised to see highlights from Cincy where he was a lot bigger and taller from what I remembered (a lanky 2 guard). The growth spurt and additional weight perhaps affected his game and rhythm. Some players need time to adjust their game to their new body.

I like the fact that he is aware there are players ahead of him and he won’t be a starter, but still decided to join the team. This ups the chances that he won’t portal due to the lack of significant playing time this year. Melo’s presence around the team this year could have also been influential in Betsy’s decision.

It still blows my mind that Red hasn't added any coaches. Hopefully, he is on stealth mode with that too. There is no evidence that the current staff can coach defense.
Are we at a max for on staff coaches? If we need to get rid of a coach to bring in a defensive minded assistant coach, who is the least valuable on staff that we can afford to let go?
