Class of 2017 SG/SF Jordan Tucker (NY / GA) Leaving Duke to Butler

Our last 3 regular seasons have been mediocre. If we don't get Tucker we won't even be medicore next year.

You speak optimistic about 2018 recruiting when we have no idea how many scholarships we can give out.

This recruitment is paramount for Syracuse basketball to get out of its funk on the recruiting trail.

You don't listen to Francis podcast he is the guy who tells it the way it is. I want to feel it's rosy around the program and that it's going to be okay mindset no matter what. However right now it's not we need Tucker.

Do you think our staff has worked as hard as they could?
The answer is no. See Lonnie Walker, Ja'Quan Newton many others.

Our staff hasn't built up depth from before sanctions.
We currently have zero Seniors. The program has a lot more disarray around it than people acknowledge.

This recruitment of Tucker isn't a must win but it's pretty damn important.

2018 when will JB go see Quinerly.
JB still hasn't seen this kid. We're in big trouble if we aren't going hard after these kids. They are the area that JB will recruit too. 6 hour radius, so if we don't get over to NJ to see them, then...

Wrong. Ja'Quan wasn't an oversight by the staff. There was one scholarship available and three guards were offered. Kaleb hopped at the offer.

Newton committed before Kaleb.
Kaleb Joseph commitment August 17th, 2013.
Syracuse gets commitment from PG Joseph

Newton committed to Miami on August 7, 2013
Miami stays hot, lands ESPN 100 PG

Francis already outlined it we didn't recruit Newton. Newton wanted to come to Syracuse he went to Scoop and Rick Jackson's HS.
Newton picked Miami over UCLA, Minnesota, Texas A&M.

This wasn't a Joseph or Newton situation.[/QUOTE]

Newton committed before Joseph because he was rebuffed by the staff, and because it was apparent that Joseph was going to commit here.

Making the tournament is a requisite to winning it all, son... so yeah, you might want to reconsider your position.

Not really. I think our chances are slim regardless is my point. We need to build back up for the future. So, this is a rebuilding the cupboard, and developmental year in my eyes. Adding JT, and EA would be great then hit 2018 hard. Sorry to be negative Nancy over here, but it is what it is. I have faith in the process, and we will have another winning season but we are young. Not UK/Duke young.

So they didn't recruit him but he officially had a scholarship offer. Got it. Don't take everything you read here as gospel.

Winning it all isn't the only thing that matters to me. Another 13 or more miserable Mondays & Saturdays this year are staring us in the face.

Like I said, I would like to keep the winning season streak alive, and go on a run. I just see what is staring us in the face very clearly.

Ennis leaving after one year killed us. If the staff had any inclination he was a one and done we would have taken another guard.

I do think the staff hasn't built in contingency plans that well.

We need a full roster ASAP.

Completely agree. 17-18 is a rebuilding year no matter who we get. Feel bad for Battle, but if you look at it any other way you are going to be disappointed.

Ennis leaving early certainly hurt us, but depending on Kaleb Joseph and Ron Patterson to provide quality minutes as the 1-2 hurt more.

And by hard you mean 1 or possibly 2 recruits given that we have 0 seniors.

The G-League isn't life changing money. You can get a desk job and earn what most of them will earn under the new CBA. The G-League is still a joke until the NBA treats it like a true minor league where players can develop, get called up and have their own farm system. Right now it isn't that.

A joke to who? I never said it was life changing money but it's pretty obvious that a lot of these players no longer think of playing in the d league as being disgraceful. It is definitely gaining popularity and when more money starts funneling into it it will continue to grow. You are forgetting the point that most of these kids in school don't want to be in school. They literally just want to play ball and get paid and the sooner they can do that the better for them (not saying I agree) and to some of these kids this desk job money is life changing kind of money. It is what it is but look at how many players declared this year regardless of where they are taken in the draft. D league is gonna be stacked with talent that may or may not ever see the NBA. It is what it is but unless ncaa compensates players (not saying I agree with) then it's the reality we face.

Back to the subject at hand, Tucker still had interest in SU after they stopped recruting. He actively searches his name on Twitter and when I posted a tweet about what I read on here, he wanted more specifics because he was clueless about what some of you "insiders" wrote.

Back to Tucker...what does this even mean? Tucker asked you about specifics of a post that you tweeted about from details talked about on this forum all because he searched his name and read something on twitter? If so, curious as to what it was about that he wanted to know

Yep. If we don't get Tucker, let's fold the program up. Your post was all over the place. No one said that the staff did a good job in 2017. They didn't. The staff did a very poor job in 2017. A number of reasons for that. JB wasn't as interested because he wasn't going to be the coach after '18. I'm glad you finally acknowledge that fact by the way. And, I did listen to Francis' podcast . Please don't tell me what I listen to and what I don't. You don't know. Who said everything was rosy around the program? Not me. I said that I thought we would have a terrific recruiting year in 2018. Ships won't be a problem. And all I said was what you said in your last sentence. Tucker isn't a must get for the program. But it's damn important.

Consider me shocked you would listen to the podcast. I figured since you don't use a smart phone you wouldn't listen but I am glad to hear you did.

Second, who said fold up the program? We are Seton Hall in the old Big East right now. Not Syracuse. 3 regular seasons in a row and the future looks mediocre again next year. That will mean an entire class of SU students will likely see all 4 regular seasons being mediocre.
Scholarships ARE a problem. We only have 1 open. Kids aren't going to be patient with our staff recruiting if they don't have solid offers. Battle is the only guy who could be an NBA early entry. If we take 2 more Freshman it would be saving one scholarship for 2018. We have a scholarship crunch for the 2018 and I don't see Syracuse leading for any of the big dogs recruits right now.

Third, the staff did a poor job for 2017? The fact JB wasn't interested in making sure Hop had a good program to take is a big problem. The acknowledgement JB wasn't interested in recruiting was done to protect him from criticism,

If we lose Tucker then confidence in GMac will be even lower. This is a must win recruitment. Just so we are a bubble team next year.

Over the past 41 years, we have had a lot of teams that were looked upon as bubble teams at best pre seasons that had much better success in the real season. I don't know of anyone that thought that Jb not being interested in recruiting was a good thing. How could they? We will land at least two top 40 kids next year. Maybe more. Maybe one sooner than people expect.

Listen to Cusefan0307 who is one of the most objective posters on this board. He said and I agree we currently have 5-13 ACC talent. Tucker and a PG get us to maybe 9-9 talent.

Without Tucker and a PG we closer to BC who is 15th than Duke who will be top 4.

Quite frankly, we could have one right now if Jb would actually go see the kid. And sadly, I'm not kidding.
Then why isn't he? No sarcasm intended.

Isn't this JB's fiduciary responsibility? JB won't go visit a top 100 recruit who wants to go to Syracuse?

I believe you which makes it very frustrating to say anymore.

This is why I feel this particular recruitment IS a litmus test -- that will show whether JB can flip the switch and dial it back up, or whether he's too set in his ways, and recruiting will slip a notch. Sadly.

But you did say "sooner than people expect?" So you're saying there's a chance? (Hey, it's OK for a dying man in this desert called "Recruiting" to grasp at mirages!!)

He asked about the incident that happened on his trip that many of you have spoken about as the reason the staff stopped pursuing him. He was unaware of anything happening.

This is the part that makes me just shake my head. He isn't some volunteer high school coach who is busy. He's being paid millions of dollars to run a basketball program in a P5 conference. It's specifically a huge part of his job to travel around the country, or in his case Northeast region, to recruit and evaluate players. Yet we're at the point where we get excited when he does the below:
  • Flies to GA to visit a recruit that fills a gaping hole in the roster (even though every other one of his peers does that on a regular basis)
  • Watches a top 30 recruit play when he is 2 hours away from campus and who he watches when he literally does not have to get out of the seat he just watched his daughter play a state playoff game in 20 minutes prior
  • Sees kids play while watching his son play AAU and other prospects happen to be playing in the same game/practice
That's how low the bar is for him lately. The Final Four run was a great, great memory and stretch for Syracuse fans. The thing nobody really wants to talk about though is that that team had 3 future NBA draft picks (probably 2 first rounders) in the top 6 rotation and had 13 losses on Selection Sunday. Or how it's become rather routine for us the last few years to get beat by teams that we are more talented than. Forget recruiting, that's coaching x's and o's which everyone says is the primary reason to let him go as long as he wants. Everyone keeps expecting him to dial it up like the old days. He's 72. Not many people perform at the same level once they hit their 70's as they did in their 40's, 50's or even 60's.

It's his job to work to recruit the best roster he can, to win games at a high level and to be in compliance with the governing body for his sport. I'm not sure which of those 3 he's been doing particularly well lately.

Adding edit to stay on topic: Jordan Tucker would fill a major need for the program and give us a much needed perimeter shooting threat.
