Agree. Bad loss. Tough game for them - Doty and Shoats were off today. Shoats, their point guard was 1-9 from the field , with no assists and 3 turnovers in his 37 minutes. Siena got killed on the boards. (37-24) Foul fest with 57 free throws between the 2 teams.
 
They play St Peters again. Lots of games left. Doty turned into JJ at the end today, but Shoats needs to help him a little.

I'm surprised that their 6-7 forward, Brendan Coyle, isn't doing a bit better for them. He looks like a good player for that league. His form on the three is pretty nice, too.
 
Today’s game is why the consideration of GMac is as far as I would go but going into anything beyond consideration( like preference) is a stretch. Being able to handle success and expectations is just as important if not much harder than putting a team on the right path and improving.

I like the intensity and the view of a team that plays hard and has real leadership. Losses like this show the learning curve is still ongoing and we don’t want to be part of the learning curve we want to be the final ascension.

How much he can grow and get more out of the team and himself this year is a big question and one that needs to matter a great deal as it pertains to his chances if he is given a look.

Agreed, I think I would like to see more success from him, and I’ll say the same about Hodgson.

I like Skinn, but his offense worries me. They wear people down, but at some point you need to score by design.

Back to GMAC. I’d like to see him get the Penn St gig, exhibit some success and potentially be a candidate down the road. We can wiggle him free from PSU if need be.

I think we’re headed in a direction where we’re going to be looking for a guy who can win right away, right the ship and reputation, and if he leaves, he leaves.

In a perfect world, GMAC would replace him and have a long run - we’ve never been the “get a new guy every 3 years” kinda school, nor should we aspire to be.

I would not want to see GMAC go to ND next- there are only 2 outcomes there. He either fails, and is not a future candidate for us, or he succeeds - and I don’t think we can lure him back if that happens.

Bottom line, I think he can coach, but I think we need more proof.

I’m not confident we could lure any successful head coach from Penn State. I get they don’t care about basketball, but they still have way way more money than we do.
 
A good friend of GMAC recently approached my family on the beach during vacation. Apparently he used to drive from Scranton and would stay with GMAC and Gorman when he came for games. He only wanted to talk GMAC as our next head coach. Man, I was like- this is DEFINITELY not happening next year, we need someone more proven! And he didn’t like that obviously. But I mean- we LOVE GMAC. I love GMAC and I always have and will. Never got to play with him but have definitely interacted many times. It’s not that. At all. Just need someone who can get us out of this hole please.

Yup, I think GMac is a couple of years away I like this development as a coach, and he is showing some promise there. I think, as you said in 3-4 years, if his success is continued and maybe he makes the tournament once or twice he would be a very appealing candidate at that time. Right no,w we just have to have someone more proven and more high-profile. We need a quick turnaround

I think both Skinn and Hodgson are what I envision GMac's profile will look like in a couple of years. Both have positives both have negatives. I think we can and should do better than both. They should be fallback options, then it is offense in Hodgson or defense in Skinn. Either are decent, not great.

My son, an Siena alum, said Coyle’s been a disappointment having been recruited locally as a 3 point shooting phenom. He said it was known he had some defensive deficiencies but that his offensive prowess would more than offset it. He had an excellent sophomore year last year (.393 from 3) but has really struggled shooting this year (.300 this year). The entire team is only averaging .310 this year and it’s hurting them. GMac will have to recruit more 3 point shooters.

Can’t say I disagree with the gist of your post but I am not sure anyone can have success at Penn State. Someone else posted a week or so ago about the challenges that come with playing fourth or fifth fiddle in the hierarchy of athletic programs.

What does success even look like in Sappy Valley… a game or two over 500, mid-pack in the Big 20, maybe a NIT bid every few years? Lightning in a bottle is always possible but the Big 20 is a tough conference to have sustained success for an under supported team. For the Nittany Kittens to even make the NCAA’s is a monumental achievement.

Rhoades is making some serious loot and probably not going anywhere just yet. They didn’t get GMAC as a player so they might as well try to get him as their coach, it would be tough to turn down that amount of money if offered a job no matter the circumstances.

Was seeing a great comeback until that unfortunate bad Doty TO bringing the ball up with about 30sec(?) left.
Siena is a team -enjoy watching their games far more than drowning with our team this season.

i imagine Shrewsberry is safe till his son and Marcus Burton graduate after next year. After next year depending how they do, it may be very interesting at Notre Dame.

I’m not surprised by the decline. It’s been several years since they’ve made the tournament and Albany lost hosting their conference tournament, which I think created some buzz. Most casual fans probably don’t even realize they’re having a good year. Doesn’t help that downtown Albany is a ghost town, and half the workforce is working from home on weeknight games.

Make the tournament this year and I bet attendance would pick up next year.
 
I disagree.
Unless SU comes calling, I think he would stay another year or two.
He loves the area and feels a need to bring them back consistently until he leaves.
At least that is the vibe I get.
