slight specific letdown about Babers era

here's a good example of the "it's the fancy passing offense that's to blame" when the defense gives up 350 yards rushing

Do we get to put an asterisk next to the loss because the QB put up 300 passing yards?

That’s kind of my point why are we talking about the qb at all when the issue is clearly the matador defense?

5.71 yards per play against maryland

yards per play last year 5.68

meatheads like a lower yards per play when a QB crashes around.
If you’re not crashing around, you better put up Peyton Manning stats circa the 00s.

We don’t have time for you to get better, finished product only please.

Thank you.

Don’t see where any of that has to do with Eric being able to run and thus needed to be accounted for. Tommy they play him to throw but not to run.

My point is that wishing for a dual threat QB is fine - but it's a trade off. And in this specific case (and in general) it tends to discount what a very good passer brings that a dual threat guy has less of. We got spoiled by memories of McNabb who was good at both.

Continuously bringing up TD’s stats is like Atlanta fans pointing to Matt Ryan’s fantasy points this past weekend in an ass kicking.

The point of the game is to win not put up sick stats in a blowout.

Really? The goal is to win football games. Thank you. lol.

In an epic loss it's ok to look around after diagnosing what went wrong and asking where the hope can come from. Based on how TD looked in game 1, game 2 looked like improvement. Maybe you can't see that?

I’m personally not wishing for a dual threat quarterback. I’ve simply stated we lost a big time threat from our team last year in eric’s running ability. That’s a fact. Whether you think the improved pocket passing will make up for that- which was always going to be the trade off as had been discussed repeatedly- is a different topic. I don’t want or need DeVito to tuck it and run 20 times a game. That’s unnecessary. But the ability to tuck and run and slide for 5 yards when it’s available is much better than throwing a pass directly through a defender. Adding in erratic o line play and subpar receiver separation only makes it more challenging.

We lost the game by 43 points.

I appreciate your half glass full approach but a weak OL and an immobile drop back QB is a tough formula.

Were you at the game?

No. Thought about it. I have a sister-in-law who lives in Baltimore. But my boys had soccer.

You must not have read my other thoughts on game day. I am very disappointed in how we played. The OL looks weak. The D looked worse.

If you were at the game, you probably saw TD evading the rush multiple times. He's not immobile. He's just not run 1st like Eric was. The WR looked like they wanted to block every time TD escaped rather than get open. It will get better.

And honestly, soon we'll see TD have games throwing that will shred ED's best games.

I hear you and agree.

He's young. The OL will get better. The WR will get better at coming back to the ball. And he'll get better at getting the ball out before his line dissolves.

I am hoping the oline and wideouts get better. And his game was much better than game 1, excluding the two bad turnovers.

TD was more than fine, he did what he could with what he had to work with. I hope that is the norm but if that’s the only bright spot we saw the results.

Real hope has to come from our defensive coordinator figuring out a strategy to contain the run, developing a serviceable LB rotation, scheming and making adjustments in the secondary to not give an 8 yard cushion to WR’s and a passing game that is content in slant passing us to death.

The defense as a whole and the OL need to really figure this out or we’re looking at having to hope for Herculean efforts from a few individuals just to stay in some games.

The D coordinator figured it out last year. The disappointment came from believing that it would carry through. I think the LB's will be fine in time (though Armstrong I worry about). We didn't forget how to cover slant patterns. I'm less worried about the D long term than I am about the tackles on the OL.

don't you like how he bolded the syracuse only stuff. next year devito is going to break every single season passing record here and the glory days guys will shrug

What I bolded was the SU passing stuff.

my point is that we should start comparing to teams that pass the ball because that's what we do now

And I have no problem with that. On all these threads I’m one of Tommy’s supporters. But I’m not going to knock Eric and was replying to the words he was a crappy QB.

So was Tebow.

Doesn’t mean he wasn’t a great college football player.

someday soon, we're going to combine highly efficient passing with volume and it's going to blow the socks off people. i think it'll probably be next year.

I hope so.

Maybe we can do it this year.

This week?
hell we did it last week but people don't see it

39+ attempts 163 rating

since 2000, nassib did it once against USF and dungey did it twice against colgate and uconn

we got murdered and a lot of people don't like pass happy offenses so they somehow get mad about the only good thing about saturday's game

It is early in the season and in his career. So it is difficult to determine how much of his production was overall improvement vs the game being out of hand. We won’t really know until the WMU. Glass half full people aren’t worried. Glass half empty have concerns.

I hope you're right.

Tommy is not immobile. He can move a bit. And, I agree that he was hurt on Saturday by the WRs failure to improvise and move to open space while he tried to avoid the rush - that came on every play.

But I worry that Tommy's skill set will be a difficult one for our OL talent level to accommodate.

That's what I saw up close on Saturday.

I love your enthusiasm.

But we got mauled on both sides of the ball.

The QB rating data is pretty meaningless.

when they were down by 14 or less, he was 7-10, 98 yards, 1 td, 1 int that really wasn't his fault. 165 rating

down more than 14, 170 rating

most of his yards game down more than 2 td but for that short time where they had a chance to come back, he was fine.

When it was 28-7 he was 8-14 100 yards 1 TD 1 INT 1 Fumble.

i'm trying really hard to be nice here. i don't think the other side of the ball is relevant to evaluating syracuse's passing offense.
