St. Joseph's Postgame

I’m just glad we won. Finals week, 9:00 start, no fans or atmosphere in the building. It all totaled up for a listless game. Let’s get ready for Hofstra. The guys know they didn’t play well tonight.
Yea man Hofstra dumpster seems like a tough one once again

Lol what?? If we win some of our tough ACC matchups and limit the losses we are in the tourney and it won't matter if we beat every scrub team by 1 in double OT. NET would only factor in if we have a bunch of losses and are on the bubble. Everything is still 100% in our control. It's not like an 8 point win is the equivalent of an L under the NET.
That's right, just win games. We have plenty of quad 1 and 2 opportunities in the ACC this year. But I still don't understand the NET. Take a look at the team in front of us, Northwestern. They are 5-4. 0-2 in quad 1 games, 0-2 in quad 2 games. They just moved up a spot after losing at home to Ohio State by 4. Ohio State's best win is at home against Notre Dame and they have a loss to Pittsburgh!

Well kids best get over their illness come matchup with Hofstra. Keep winning and then have to get a much bigger margin result in the other three after Hofstra. Also if they can find a way to win Sunday by 20 plus it would help a lot too.

I think everyone needs to relax on the NET at this point. A lot of teams ahead of us will drop in their conference play and we'll go up.

Tennessee will almost certainly be a quad 1 win at the end of the year. A lot of the mid majors have already played 90% of their quality opponents. We just need to focus on wins. At the end of the season if we have a handful of high quality wins, no or a very limited number of bad losses, everything numbers wise will work itself out.

People are too concerned with the daily fluctuations of a few spaces with less than 1/3 of the season done IMO. The percentage points of a 8 pt, vs. 15 pt. win against St. Joes in December will not be the deciding factor of the season, I'm almost positive of that.

Teams with a net as high as 77 have made the tournament. Teams with as low as 30 have missed the tournament.

Each team on the bubble has their team sheet at the end of the year. You can look them up, there’s a lot on there.

Interesting but not surprising that in Ken Pom (we are 67th) there is only one team ahead of us with a worse offensive efficiency rating, Seton Hall. Is it reasonable to think we could play meaningfully better offensive basketball when Freeman returns, say in the 60’s - 70’s and comparable defense?

If so, we’d slot up in the 40 spot overall. I’d be good with that given what I’ve seen (bubble squad).

This game did not help our NET rating. We dropped to 81 after an 8 point win...we have no chance to make tourney.
We got a lot of games to play.

Also don't fall in to the trap that our game results fully determine the net. Every other game is part of the calculation. Yes, our results are more favorable when we win by a big score. But every other game outcome has an impact on our placement too.

JJ was blowing by his man with ease for most of the game. The looks he was getting in the lane were solid and he had a good percentage there. Just horrible jump shooting/three point shooting. He is really not the guy we want catch and shooting threes.
I wasn't mad it him for taking those shots. Somebody needed to do something. Just explaining why he got so many shots off.

I said a couple games ago, he should focus on being a facilitator instead of hunting his shot so much. That will open up the floor for him and for others.
You think someone on the coaching staff would get that through his head too.

While I agree that George didn’t play great, he did get in the lane & finish at the rim through contact with his size a few times in the 2nd half. I’d much rather that then the awkward, jerky-jerky 3 pointer/pull-up 2 he breaks out sporadically…

I was actually expecting a performance like last night. 9 days off after the biggest win the of the season. Not a big crowd due to the late start and the weather. I don’t bet on games my teams participate in but if I did I would’ve bet St Joe’s to cover in a heartbeat.

The only thing that really ticked me off was that behind the back pass that Starling tried. Cuse I think was up by 7 and had all the momentum after a sluggish start. It looked like they were a good minute or 2 away from blowing the game open. And Starling does that and allows St Joe’s to hit a 3 the other way. A 5 point swing. That’s the kind of mistake you expect from a freshman, not a Senior who’s started for 4 years.
If I bet, I never bet in favor of Cuse. And I hope I lose the bet. I look at it like how much am willing to pay to see Cuse win if I make a bet against them. Last night I took St. Joes +5.5 first half spread, figuring Cuse would come out slow.

A lot of people were pointing to Hofstra as the trap game but really St Joes always was unless Donnie was healthy and ready to go. Finals and a long layover after a brutal stretch with a key win.

Also St Joe’s is not the team that got blitzed by Virginia Tech anymore. That’s not trying to paint them as an opponent we should have to fight tooth and nail to get a win vs but if the team was battling illness plus finals plus rust along with our known FT issues ( Betsey was the biggest culprit last night) then last night went about as you would expect.

St Joes played with a lot more confidence and aggression than I saw in the long highlights from their earlier games.

Anyways we need to get Donnie back and it’s crystal clear that our offense needs him a great deal. Hofstra is a great opportunity to get a decent non conference mid major win given they have out performed and we also should be more than ready and amped for that one. Then put on the rout the next 3 and walk into a big ACC opener to keep stacking wins and getting Q1/Q2 wins to boot. As long as we defend like we can these games won’t always be pretty but bad losses are far less likely.

Just to add- we want Tenn to beat Ville and then get on a roll as well as we want Houston to do the same Kansas too. Keep those games as high Q1 level games all year and then we do our part.

Wouldn’t hurt if Monmouth got on a roll and wins their conference too but those kind of outcomes are just gravy so long as we do what we have to.

He usually makes a lot more of those 7 foot floaters. Their shot blocker was excellent and forced an extra high arc when he went glass a few times. But as you say, his shot selection was no different than the last few games where he shot well. I think the biggest problem he has right now, Is he may be shying away from drawing contact because he does not want to go to the free-throw line. Overall shot selection, except for Betsy and Kingz was bad yesterday.

There's flaws in what we were doing. At one point when we were really struggling early in the game Souare had touched the ball about 5 times more than Kingz and he was 18 feet from the basket.
In addition, he put the ball on the floor several times. He really should not be doing that.

Here’s a crazy stat. He has played over 70 minutes this year has yet to make a basket, make a free throw, or even attempt a shot!

He is a better defender than what we had in the middle last year, but that’s not enough.

When Donnie comes back, White needs to play more of those minutes.

Which is strange because while he’s not a threat he actually was 37-62 for Georgia Tech last year.

There was one or two significant length stretches where our offense was to just give JJ the ball and let him drive it.
Was the offense to just give JJ the ball or did JJ not share the ball and return to his bad habits? I think the latter.
