St. Joseph's Postgame

The guard play is still bad, and it really limits the offense. We were really pushing the ball in transition last night which makes a lot of sense but the guards are so milquetoast that they can't consistently find points there, or in any situation.

Our best shooters still consistently miss wide open 3s. Think we are not quite as bad offensively as we look but I think the coaches are doing the right thing, this is the way the team has to play. We need to find whatever points in transition that we can off our defense. The halfcourt is simply not good with George and Starling in command

George is in a funk currently. Didn't have the spark I saw the first 5 games ish. Hopefully he rounds into form soon. I think a big blowout win before Clemson will get some mojo back for a few guys.

Really happy with Kyle's improvement at the FT line.

On the plus side, Kiyan's 4-5 is encouraging.

As is Kyle's 6-9 for 67%, which also hits all the magic numbers.
At least we’re not Little Rock.

I suspect George was one of the guys under the weather.

to being one of the best defensive teams in the country.
I think that’s dependent on where the cutoff is for best in the country. While they have improved their defense (I think mostly by adding players who are interested in playing defense) they’re still quite a bit away from the elite top-10 defenses.

That's not the Gotcha you think it is when all three of those games were 1possession or OT and they weren't all on a neutral court.
My point is that mindset and thinking is pointless and invalid.

Why in the hell was this game on at 9. There was NOTHING on at 7. Perfect example of ESPN calling the shots and screwing Syracuse. No reason to play a Thursday night non league game at 9, unless you’re on regular ESPN.
Niners and nooners - you can keep them.

Missed most of the game, how did JJ end up taking the most shots? Was the offense out of sorts and he had to do off the dribble jumpers? End of shot clock stuff? Assuming this was an anomaly, he's been much better this year about volume shooting.

Overall, two areas where we can get better have been 3PT% and FT%. Last night it looks like the threes were good, but FTs were very bad. We hadn't shot over 30% from three since Monmouth, so nice to see we were over 40%.

For the year, Donnie: 28 of 36 from the FT line. Everyone else combined: 89 of 170.

Finally, with last night's uptick in 3s, we are now at 30% for the year. That number has to keep climbing.

I don't know what to say about the FT shooting. It is so abysmal, it's almost like its a virus.

UConn and Duke are roughly ranked 200th in FT% out of 365 teams and they are at 71%. Trying to get to the mid to high 60s in FT% should not be too much for a team with NCAAT expectations, imo.

I disagree.

I think Fennell tried too hard and failed. I would like Red to give him a specific role in the offensive plan & see what he can do. This would require Red to have a plan.

The offense desperately needs a plan, purpose, & some unselfish players focused on setting others up.

Fennell strikes me as someone who could be that kind of presence.

I'd actually like Anthony to be that presence too. I think his game would explode.

Fennell, George, and others seem lost bc there is no plan. Imo.
Fennell has rarely performed well when given the opportunity. You could be 100% correct that Red's offensive plan is not conducive to Fennell maximizing his talent but the plan is not going to change so the team must work within the plan, no matter whether that plan is good or bad. When, or if, Donnie returns we will have a solid rotation with little room for Fennell to get minutes on the court.

There was one or two significant length stretches where our offense was to just give JJ the ball and let him drive it.

JJ was blowing by his man with ease for most of the game. The looks he was getting in the lane were solid and he had a good percentage there. Just horrible jump shooting/three point shooting. He is really not the guy we want catch and shooting threes.

There's flaws in what we were doing. At one point when we were really struggling early in the game Souare had touched the ball about 5 times more than Kingz and he was 18 feet from the basket.

This game did not help our NET rating. We dropped to 81 after an 8 point win...we have no chance to make tourney.
Lol what?? If we win some of our tough ACC matchups and limit the losses we are in the tourney and it won't matter if we beat every scrub team by 1 in double OT. NET would only factor in if we have a bunch of losses and are on the bubble. Everything is still 100% in our control. It's not like an 8 point win is the equivalent of an L under the NET.

Seeing only eight turnovers surprised me when I am pretty sure we had 2 or 3 back to back on trips down the court in the second half. That’s when it felt like the team was sleepwalking to me.

Our defense really frustrated St Joes. They’re not a great offense, averaging 70-ish points a game, but we held them to 63 points on a night when we looked less than average as a team. Pretty good.

I felt like this game was never out of hand so I’m not so nuts about Reds substituting as some here. He’s shown in big games that he runs a shorter bench. Need to give those other kids some run in games as well
My only complaint was when he pulled Betsey in the 1st half after eight relatively quick points including two 3's.

What I couldn’t understand was why Souare thought he was a guard and kept putting the ball on the floor around the FT line area. He turned it over almost every time. Why is he dribbling?
