Start a True Freshman QB...

He is in good spirits he knows it was a free year .im so proud how he came back out in a boot in pain to support his boys . For the folks he don’t think he is a leader I’ve been told by coaches he’s Loved by all . Thank you crusty I appreciate you asking
My advice is to tune out the vocal minority. I'm sure every one of the true fans here cares deeply about Tommy's physical and emotional well being.

Not sure if someone had mentioned this already but I would expect Rex to start with whoever the back up QB is getting some valuable reps.

TD should go to a school like boise state, BYU, Houston, SMU or something like that I wouldn't want to see him at the P5 level go somewhere he can put up numbers and score a lot of points.

Those schools recruit very good qbs. What about his play would attract schools that good? The elite 11 stuff doesn't apply anymore. The game hasn't slowed down for him at the d1 level.

We absolutely had a chance to win this game despite giving up the yardage. The TOs negated much of it, had the WRs caught the ball and the offense capitalized on the TOs.

We won the TO battle 4-0.

I'm aware. Read the post I responded to. The turnovers we got negated the yardage we gave up that the previous poster mentioned, giving us a chance to win had the offense capitalized.

SMU took shane buchele he showed more than tommy when he was at texas but didn't light the world on fire, he's not gonna be guarenteed the starting job or anything but he'd be playing against easier teams with a great supporting caste and a QB/offense ready scheme, he'd do well at any G5, he can throw a good ball and at that level the game is slower, if everything said about him here is true he'd still have success at one of those places. He's not lighting the world on fire but I have a feeling he's the least of our problems

I probably know less about football - I don’t even play Madden - than anyone on this board. But I think HCDB knows he has to play at least one of the young guys now, perhaps mixed in the Rex, to
work for the future.

Beyond that, I think SU is not able to just take another QB and plug him into this system. The system isn’t working right now, and we need some variation. Two headed QB system, wildcat packages, moving pocket every play, anything to inject some “multiplicity” into this offense.

I don’t disagree with your premise that Dino is way too loyal to this guy. But I will also say he doesn’t have much of a choice. Look at Culpepper - who is the backup. He can barely throw the ball.

Makes me shutter to think about how bad the other QB’s on the roster are.
This all falls back on Dino. He is the one who recruited these players. If one of the Freshman QBs can’t at least function against Liberty next week, we are doomed. I have seen Freshman QBs come in and shine for other BCS programs (Dungey), so that excuse is lame. I’m not attacking your comment, I am just sick of the excuses.

Here's an idea... hire Dungey as QB coach?
Gilbert obviously sucks

I think Rex will obviously get most of the playing time the next few weeks. Hopefully his ability to run will help open up some options for misdirection or give us more hope on broken plays. Teams are going to load up the box and play our outside receivers tight to stop the run and limit Rex’s ability to make quick throws to receivers.

I hope we see more stacked sets of receivers or at least splitting out Benson at the outside to make a physical mismatch. It would be also nice to see our WRs get involved in the running game through jet sweeps or an end around.

Also, with Rex’s ability to run better than TD, I think play option with a rollout might give a bit more options on the intermediate pass plays.

I’m sure Dino and Gilbert will have some packages for Markiewicz that focus on quick hits.

The throw to Taj in the first Q was unbelievably good. Other OC’s and QB coaches will think they can solve the other issues. Plus, if they have better OL play or running game? Will help a metric ton.

No where near ready, he's not an option.
I’m curious why this is so. I get it, he’s young, learning the system, blah blah blah. But “nowhere NEAR ready”? Unable to even manage a game even? Serious question.

What evidence is there that Rex is a better runner than Tommy? Tommy's run for a 60 yard touchdown. he's a faster runner than Eric Dungey was. His problem is that he can't create passing plays on the run. he can run the draw but not scramble. I don't recall seeing Rex do that well, either and I haven't seen him out-run everybody to the end zone.

At the QB position, speed isn’t the only indicator of running efficacy. In Rex’s very limited action, you can see he’s at least comfortable running the ball. Tommy’s running the ball always looks out of need, instead of want. For Rex to be successful, he needs to run the ball because he doesn’t have the arm power/accuracy that Tommy does. I would think he knows that.

One of Dungey’s pitfalls was that he had little care in preventing his own injuries. I think Tommy is much better at understanding that he will win games with his arm, not his legs and therefore rarely wanted to run. I think Rex will make decisions differently knowing he doesn’t have a great arm to fall back on.

You never know how some athletes are going to respond under pressure when the whistle blows. Practice is not the same. One of the other QBs might just be a gamer, and be our next best option after TD. Only one way to find out.
