Sterlin Gilbert

I think you misses the sarcasm that was indicated by his "NOT"s.
I don’t think they were there when I commented. I didn’t see them then

It's only one game, but lord, he did not have a good showing. If you've been posting in real-time on Twitter and search for him, USF fans are pitying SU for having him on the staff. One of the many tweets today, this from the USF beat writer:

Have fun reading the replies.

We didn’t block well this play but i wonder... is this a play call or a read? They have 7 guys near the LOS. We have 3 WRs vs their 4 DBs. So it was either a crap play call or a crap read.

Didnt matter ? You’re kidding. Didnt get a 4th and inches inside 25 yard line. Didn’t go for it on 4 and 1 and then missed a kick. Had 38 total yards on ground.

Really, the 2 backs opting out haven't made much of an impact here. Not getting short yardage is the inability of the OL to win and/or the play calling not out scheming the D on that particular down. That's rarely on the rb. Sorry, but unless you have a special talent, rb is plug and play.

You mean like a 4 star player from a former powerhouse in Adams? Clearly the plug and play DIDNT work

Would’ve been nice to see a jet sweep today or at least a little effort to get the play makers (nykiem and Jordan) in space. He did none of that today. The ONE time to Nykiem was great then he was MIA. It was really disappointing actually.

I get your point, but do you think we rush for 100 today with those 2 available? If holes aren't there, no star rating back can make an impact. The play calling might have been a bit different, but their DL penetrated and blew up runs all day. I thought we pass blocked decently enough to pop some throws, but the routes were bad and drops didn't help.

Boy, you weren't kidding about the replies to the tweet. They keep going on and on and on --- everyone says the same thing (or an lol type response) -- Gilbert appears to be universally hated among USF Nation. Just great.

USF nation. I cannot detail the amount of and depth of lack of caring I have for USF nation. this is the most I have ever or will ever think about them

today sucks

More people need to see this. Look at that box!
Watch the LB play (you have to go frame by frame). 44 was flying down hill and into the A gap as soon as saw our TE took a step toward the interior of line. 44 was already in the backfield as TD was handing off. Rhino ran by 44 at the snap to try to get to the mike.

2 issues here (besides the box). The FB playing Guard needs to read that. But the bigger issues seems to be that UNC had instant recognition from scouting and tendencies that play was coming out of that formation on first down. It happened all game.

That's on coaching as much as the OL missing reads and getting blown back trying to run block.

I'm not a football coach but if you slow down this first play doesn't Elmore miss his block by letting the blitzing LB run right past him and make the tackle? He was looking at the other LB who was just sitting back there. Even if Elmore blocks the blitzer its not a big play but it should be positive yards. Just saying maybe we don't kill Gilbert on this if the Fullback they stuck at Guard didn't pick up the blitz on his 1st play on OL

Bringing this thread back because I'm concerned that Gilbert is a huge question mark. I don't have a great feel for Tex.

Ironic bc isn’t Dino an offensive guru? I’m more concerned w Dino than the OC. Need to get off to a good start or this is going to be a slog

Interesting read on the Veer and Shoot with Gilbert / HCDB. Note the QB needed section. Garett Sharder sounds like a better fit at QB due to his legs based upon this analysis of the offense.

agreed. If you dont have to account for the QB it makes defending so much easier.

I have my skepticism with Sterling but Im gonna stay on the positive. He has been good or mediocre most of his career. Never as bad as last year. His 2015 Tulsa offense was 21st in scoring. His 2016 Texas offense was ranked 46th. USF offense was 10th in 2017. It dipped in 2018 after losing Quinton Flowers. Their fans complained about Gilbert but their defense was worse that year. Gilbert has never been in a situation like he was in going into 2020. He's now had a full year of install, has a healthier line and better QB depth. He has something to work with now. We will see.

The only thing I can add is that I happen to speak with a staffer last month and I get the feeling within the program they look back at no spring as maybe the biggest contributor to last seasons issues other than injuries. Imagine bringing a new OC in and they only get two practices in shorts before stopping Spring.

They also took some practices off too.

The O and play calling did seem to get better late in the year which was a positive. That said down and distance and red zone playing has to be light years better this year and I think a lot of that is on Dino.

I agree. I like the under center strategy. I just don’t love the plays we run out of it. It’s too predictable. Just a lot of power off tackle. Would like to some counters, iso’s and boot passes mixed in. Maybe some option.

Ye of little faith, who would expect 3 runs up the middle from under center...all game. Nobody, I tell you, nobody!

It’s always on Dino, good, bad otherwise

That is fair and i agree that he gets a total pass for last year. My hope is that he takes advantage of our personel strenghts vs trying to make them fit the system. My two cents is that we have some really nice weapons that need to be utilized. The RB room is loaded. Possibly the best we have had in 10 years. As to the WRs im not sure but many of them pass the look test. My breakout kid based on what i have been told is Jones. Last point when you mention USF his production slipped after his dual threat QB was gone. Im not anti Tommy but rather pro dual threat. I hope that they both do well but believe that in the college game Qbs that can beat you with their legs usually do well. Time will tell.
