SU Athletic Director Candidates

It blows my mind that Syracuse is threatening to hire two people who literally no one else in the world wants. She was fired from Pitt for being awful at her job, and appears to be a fairly toxic boss. No one wants her because she is objectively awful, yet SU is possibly going to pay her an insane amount of money to drive the nail in coffin? And Hop, again, no one wants him, but there's a chance we can reanimate his corpse to continue his mediocre head coach career.

Edit: also why in an era of budget cuts and declining enrollment is academia adding extra layers of high paid bureaucracy?
*correction. Lykes was hired already and has been being paid alot according to richmond ha since last July.

Now she's applying for a promotion.

Too many decisionmakers would rather live with the mistake than admit that they were wrong.

I gotta give Lykes credit somehow she has hustled her way into still having a 7 figure job even though from everything we know she should be at best a gym teacher right now.

There was no reason for her to be hired in the first place. What a stupid unnecessary and money wasting role that was created for her. How many other pointless admin roles are there at SU?

Exactly.

2025-2026 has been a trainwreck for Severyrud and his legacy here... Lyke being his cement shoes.

Now one has to wonder if AW will be cajoled to come back as well??

There obviously was a reason to hire her because... she was hired. It was done with intent, and a $1M salary, and a title that didn't exist before she came on board. We don't know what we don't know. What seems to be so blatantly obvious from the outside looking in is irrelevant.

It seems that maybe they underestimated the nature of her personality and now they have a PR issue. I would worry more about what they might do to mitigate that.

Really. This is a ’n Univ of Akron law grad who was doing “color” on softball games. Becomes AD at directional Michigan! She’s got something going on.

when is the chancellor announcement today? and would like to hear scenarios that play out?

Haynie --> inside hire. does he bring the baggage of the past admins with him? Does that mean it's more likely to be an internal hire like Lyke or will he have the chops to go outside and bring in better?

Outside --> if new person outside of the family, Will they clean house further? Based on this drama, if it were me I would be taking a hard look at all these Kent people floating around and some heads would roll. Does that bring a whole lot of new faces that are more likely to bring in outside hires for all our sports positions.

Lot of whatifs...
Has to jettison Kent’s entire team.

The problem is her law school classmate from the ultra prestigious University of of Akron law school. That’s the link to the cronyism

Does this stuff with Lyke not also reflect a bit on Haynie too? For those that know far more about him is there risk that systemic issues like allowing the hiring of someone like Lyke and such allegations to be put down by HR could persist with keeping this move in-house?

As expected, Haynie it is.

NO.

Kent brought her on.
Period.

I don't think so but gotta be honest I was surprised he admitted that he doesn't have a concrete plan on dealing with some of the issues SU is facing.

EDit

Good point - took that nugget from dot com.

Article said something like no specific plans on addressing those issues yet. Strategic plan will be developed.

I’m in meetings and can’t tune in but that’s a bit concerning unless there is more context around it for those watching ..

As another POV I actually think that can be a good thing in leadership (as someone who has been in executive leadership roles for awhile now). Having concrete plans sometimes puts us in a box and forces us to want to be right rather than DO right (if that makes sense). Having a good plan but willing to listen to changes and updates is a positive... but again just a rosy colored POV lol. Being a true leader is about listening first.

The title of the article could have been written better. Bullying, abuse of authority, and undermining JW are the biggest things I took away from the article.

Happy Kent is leaving. I stuck up for him in the past, but good riddance.
I've been harsh on JW and Kent, but it seems like its a lot more Kent and his minions (and the BoT) than JW. So I will take back anything that I've said about JW's performance as AD. I can totally relate to having C-suite level folks trying to micromanage poop that they know nothing about.
