SU NIL Budget

Interesting comments from Sampson … especially considering what that program has been the past decade.

Yeah, my first reaction was “cry me a river”, but I guess we’ll see in the upcoming years if these public comments help increase NIL funding for Houston or, if Houston is poor and declines, he can say he put out this warning.

I’ve been ringing this bell for a year now, there is no freaking way this NIL money keeps coming in. People aren’t going to pay a million dollars or more every year when they get no direct return out of it. I understand there is some emotional value but those who can afford to spend without a direct ROI will be very few and cannot possibly support 64 P5 level programs

Anyone who donated presumably had enough confidence in red. A new coach with a proven resume and pizazz will generate new interest and resurrect some donors.

The more successful your football program and connections to larger private capital or even NBA connections the more sustainable keeping a constant flow of funding.

Otherwise programs will have to live with a much more volatility year over year along with accepting a lower floor for expectations and a much more difficult task to raise their ceiling.

I actually think this is why ADJW is on the right path trying to find corporate money. Individual boosters are fickle and guaranteed to bounce at the smallest sign of a losing ROI.

Agree. Even as very small time donor to Orange United for a few seasons, I couldn't help but occasionally think "What am I doing here?"

not necessarily. a lot of people donate to the program.

Btw in basketball this should benefit Syracuse the more revenue generation of a program matters in the ability to pay players.

Is the number listed “poor”? (78 million) Where is SU by comparison?

thats not nil. thats an estimated value based on revenue. interesting that su maintains that database.
I know - but Sampson was using the total revenue number in the article for some reason

Entire thing is a s**tshow. As an avid sports fan and diehard Syracuse fan, priorities in this country are so backwards.

Nait George got paid over a million dollars? Really? Criminal. I’ll never forget the BC game. I’ve never seen a worse performance by a point guard.

that was based on what he was and projected to what he could be. not what he is currently.

Definitely some hindsight at play here. But that’s kinda the point too. Why are people going to donate (generally speaking across college sports) when it looks like the player just landed on earth some games and is making 10x that person’s salary to play for a losing team?

I like the talent on this team. The coaching is failing them.

I don’t feel trolled, he didn’t do anything trolly? It’s not like he was saying “boy the orange sure are doing great this year without the pesky billionaire” and then posting that picture. I am an AW hater but I think he’s being genuine here

The revenue difference between UConn and Syracuse is due to the ACC conference revenues. There is no excuse for Syracuse not fielding a competitive basketball program year in and year out.
We have a terrible hiring record now. It’s not revenue it’s talented coaching. If you have a coach who is incompetent you will have bad results.

If Pitino was the HC this year we’d be on the bubble

The assistant behind a legendary coach who touched six decades of coaching didn’t work out.

That’s not a terrible hiring record. It’s just one bad choice under very understandable circumstances.

But no one cares. Just win in 2026-27, baby.
