Syracuse football 2018 updated roster (freshmen numbers, heights/weights)

Love the updated #'s. Some thoughts:
1. Finally we have some skillz and size in the secondary with the additions of trill, jonas, Cisco, and melifonwu.
2. Love the oline, esp Clark at 6'8" and the 6'6" frames we have to work with.
3. Is Jordan, butler, or???? The wr to step up?
4. Love the DL and love that Slayton shed about 15# down to 309# and has gotten even stronger. #top2rounds. Also, McKinley Williams has worked himself into a force and will follow in Slaytons footsteps the NFL.

GO CUSE!

These are great progressions by and large, much different than my progression in college. Or my room mates.
He left freshman year a skinny nerd for the summer and showed back up sophomore year flamboyantly gay and built like Thor.

Don’t sleep on RF Eric Coley. At 6-2, he’s also got good size (and speed) in the defensive backfield.

Man...if I had a nickle...

I mean, in his defense, it's really reasonable to assume that we'll be markedly better next year. We'll have a former all american center snapping the ball to a 4 star QB, who can hand the ball to the 4 star RB being blocked for by a 4 star OT. Alternatively, the 4 star QB can throw the ball to one of two 4 star WRs. On defense, we'll have 3 senior defensive linemen, a more experienced linebacking corps, and a corps of nationally recruited defensive backs (one of whom was a 4 star recruit). That sounds like a pretty standard ACC team.

I get the reason for optimism. I also know that there are plenty of P5 5 teams with a 4 star QB, RB, and WR on the team who don't win 6 games.
That's just me though...I've learned to be cautiously optimistic. Every year since about 1990, I convince myself, that we're good enough to win 8-10 games. Every year since 2002, I've changed my mind by game 2.

So this is the classic nickel defense, got it.

surprised there hasn't been more chatter about Custis. He dropped 14 pounds to get to 213. Perhaps dropping some bulk will help his route running? If only dropping bulk could help hands...

Agreed. I don’t get the “he’s had every chance” ... guy was injured most of last year. Was behind all ACC players. And Butler flashed enough to split reps with him.

He’s got some issues sure, but I think it’s silly to write off any WR that has seen the field in a Babers O.

He's played in 3 offensive systems during his time at Syracuse and has been used in a variety of ways (field stretcher, bubble screen catcher, end zone leaper) and has failed to make an impact in any of those roles. Nothing against the guy, but we had the same conversations last summer about him as a breakout player, and he put up 120 yards receiving.

I'll be wildly happy if he is half as productive as Tamba was his final season.

We have 4 scholarships left for 2018 instead of 3.

Unless we stumble across another Jay Bromley, another Senior Walk-on just got lucky.
I think they get it back in 2019 since he signed.

Lol. He caught a TD last year and the year before. He won the starting job last season. He has all the measurables. The current coach has spoken highly of him.

He’s made an impact. There have been others who haven’t even seen the field. It’s not like he’s a bust who can’t even play a snap.

I doubt he’ll emerge as an all-ACC type, but no need to write him off as having no impact.

Consider me silly. When I look for player to make an impact at WR, I look right past Custis. If he surprises, great. I'm just not counting on it.

I didn’t say I was counting on him. Just that it’s silly to write him off.

Right on, overlook on my part.

As long as we're comparing physical size and weight, I thought I'd do the LB group and compare them to two of the best ever. This could be our weakest position considering the loss of two very good ones in Franklin and Bennet.

Physical Attributes

Willis and Lewis both have elite physical attributes, which is one reason why both of them have been so successful in the NFL. They both measure in at 6'1" and 240 pounds, and possess sideline-to-sideline speed.
As the NFL evolves, players keep getting bigger and faster, so it's no surprise that Willis is a bit faster than Lewis. Lewis ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash at his pro day back in 1996, per 40-yard-dash-times.com.

Willis ran a 4.51-second 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine, but he wowed scouts at his pro day by running it in 4.37 seconds, per NFLdraftscout.com.

Don't know if I believe the 4.37 so I'll stick with his 4.51 which at that weight for a linebacker is very fast as is Lewis 4.58. One of the reasons they were both so good. Obviously they both hit very, very hard.

Our Roster 2018 – 19

Tim Walton 6'2” 232, RSO

Shyheim Cullen 6' 244, RJR

Nadarius Fagan 6'1”, 213 SO

Tre Allison 6'2” 230,

Juan Wallace 6'2” 215

Kadeem Trotter 6”@” 206, RF

Ryan Guthrie 6”2” 224, S

Lakiem Williams 6' 234, JR

Zack Lesko 6' 219, RSO

Andrew Armstrong 6'2" 228, JR

Tyrell Richards 6'4" 227, RF

It will be interesting to see who, if anyone, can fill the shoes of Franklin and Bennet. I have no idea about 40 times for this group do you? GOSU :)

Good analysis. Yes, the key every team strives for the combo of speed, size (including height) , instincts at the los, and ability to play and cover in space. I loved our departing backers but the T2 asked alot of them beyond their skill sets, particularly covering in space. I have my doubts about the T2, and this is the primary reason. We basically need to recruit NFL skill set lbs to be effective. I like the size and speed of the next guys up like Walton. Think Armstrong is gonna be a good one, but this unit has alot of pressure on them in this system. The other unit are the DEs.and getting to the qb without bringing extra guys. I like our DE group.

You forgot Andrew Armstrong 6' 2" 228 JR and Tyrell Richards 6' 4" 227 RF

Agree, he hasn't made an impact. He looks great walking off the bus, but thus far, has been a huge disappointment. Not someone we can count on. Its obviously gameday motor and competitive fire.
