Syracuse football defensive tackle Steven Clark's career put in jeopardy by blood clots

Cubs I would stress to the doctor that with all these doctors confirming his being ok and other programs allowing him to play there that he isn't going to prevent Steven from playing he is just forcing him to leave a school he loves

I wonder how quickly SU admins would reconsider if Steven was looking to transfer to another ACC school?

That would be a moronic take by the SU Admins to decide a medical issue because of where he ends up. I hope this clears up and Steven is healthy and able to follow his dream. I lean on the "whatever is best for the player and his parents" i'm good with.

Not that I would condone such a thing, but the med staff has buckled in other situations.

Anyways, I am confident that Steven is able to play. BTW, here's an interesting article on Tedy Bruschi: Neurology Now: Tedy Bruschi's Post‐stroke Return to the NFL. | American Academy of Neurology®

Small hole in his heart contributed to a clot which caused a stroke. Was able to recover and play. It's a good read.

Tedy lives a few towns away from me and certainly was able to figure it out. I'm surprised the university wouldn't allow the student athlete to indemnify the university in a situation like this. i feel like the solution is out there for all parties.

Best of luck BCUBS and as usual, your straightforward posts are well appreciated.

John, don't think Tucker is nearly concerned about Steven's health as he is about liability exposure.

That was my thought too. The more "pressure," there is, the more I would imagine he is inclined to stand firm on his assessment. It's unfortunate on many levels, but the fact that it looks like Steven will play again, is marvelous. I wish it were at cuse, but it seems that is going to be a tough sell. Just don't understand why Tucker couldn't receive a bit of coverage in the fact that 3 other doctors have signed off on this. Shouldn't that grant him a bit of immunity in the event that anything would happen?

Why not indemnify the doctor and university?

Player safety should always come first. Important to recognize that.

Which is why the motivation you suggest above isn't approaching this from the proper perspective, if true. Get the diagnosis right, on a case-by-case basis. Don't err on the side of conservatism just to CYA.

Thats what they have insurance for. And considering three other medical doctors cleariny him, the exposure seems nill. That doesn't come close to professional malpractice.

Not only 3 other doctors, but doctor's that actually SPECIALIZE in that field, where as a GP he would be expected to defer to a more expert opinion. I could see not allowing him to play until multiple specialists with no affiliation to either the team or the family clear him... but when 3 specialists all clear him the GP should defer to them.

Insane, stubborn old fart not willing to either admit he was wrong or that due to more information he should revise his decision.

Whatever contract Syracuse University has with Dr. Tucker should be bought out immediately. Even if he doesn't reverse this decision and Clark has to transfer to another school to continue playing. This affair should crystallize the fact Tucker needs to go and go immediately.

It definitely highlights a monumental flaw in the process, if nothing else.

Eh, people don't practice hoping to rely on backstops because when something bad happens all that stuff gets thrown into the wind. Business is alll about risk mitigation now.

If Tucker is worried about liability I wouldn't go to him as a doctor.

He would be afraid to recommend surgery or treatment that could help a patient. If you just worried about liability you can't be serving your patient as best as you can.
Tucker may have exposure to liability - just not in the way he thinks.

You can look at it that way, but the fact he took him off blood thinners means he already blew his risk mitigation.

Dude doesn't sound like a good Dr. to me. The university would be better off going with someone younger and more in tune with modern medicine.

Hey bcubs9497 I know a lawyer in the medical malpractice arena. If (and i'm hoping Steven gets reinstated and all is well) you need to go talk to a lawyer let me know. PM is open

In addition to Tucker, I imagine that there is an insurance company lurking somewhere that Tucker must (or feels he must) comport his behavior.

Eh, that comment was a bit tongue in cheek. The point of my post was what came after the first sentence.

Forget about an appeal process - what's been discussed in this thread exposes that the initial processed is seriously flawed by "not" using experts in the field and getting a second and/or 3rd expert opinion before issuing a DQ. Complete incompetence here.

Personally I would bet that if 2 or 3 experts diagnosed the same medical problem any kid or parent(s) would agree that the kid would have to hang up their cleats.

Tucker needs to either change the initial process himself or he needs to be released, retired or removed (new chant for today - RRR, RRR, RRR)...

Best of luck Bcubs...
