If you watch JB’s press conference he made a number of statements that the Syracuse media is simply too soft to question. To wit.
-He complained incessantly about Bell not rebounding. Nobody asked him why he didn’t go to either Brown or Taylor.
-he said that Benny wants to play like a three instead of a four and isn’t doing the things they need. There was absolutely no followup as to explanation as to what Benny has not been doing, particularly last night.
-JB‘s explanation for the final play made no sense. He said they were trying to get the ball to Jesse and then to Joe. Why would you facilitate with a big man? Then he said Joe should have passed the ball in bounds to Benny which is at odds with his previous statement. Nobody there bothered to ask JB why the plan was not to get the ball to Judah who has the best handle on the team and has the best chance to get to the basket and potentially dish like he did earlier to Jesse in a big spot.
-JB said nine seconds is not a lot of time to set up a final play. What? How can anybody not call him on that absurd assertion?
-JB said the zone is much easier to learn than man-to-man. Nobody followed up with a question asking for an explanation or asking why on a team with so many athletes we can’t play man-to-man like every other Team in the country. Our press core simply accepts JB’s absurd notion that we can’t play man. There is no way that we lose the game to Colgate the way we did if we played man because there is no way against a man to man defense there will be that many wide open three-pointers available.
-when I think it was Mike Waters asked about Jesse fouling JB said he knows not to foul and then said it probably is due to poor coaching. This self-pity routine is absurd given the fact that as I described above the media is so soft and afraid of him.
-finally I get the fact that Joe is going to miss shots, every player does. But his selfishness was on full display with his poor shot selection and refusal to pass the ball on the fast break. His defense was noticeably poor particularly regarding his efforts on closeouts. This has been going on for four years yet nobody in the media will ask JB why he does not hold Joe accountable.

- Bell was doing other things that Brown and Taylor can’t do on offense right now. I suspect that’s why he stayed in. The trade off of getting some better rebounding but losing a threat on offense was a trade off JB didn’t want to take, as right or wrong as that may be.

- Going though Jesse on the final play made sense. Jesse was having success in that spot in the 2nd half. Judah was not having success driving to the rim in the 2nd half. Inbounding to Benny wouldn’t affect this (the ball would ultimately still go to Jesse).

- 9 seconds is, objectively, a short amount of time to run a play. If option 1 is taken away, you have about 3 seconds to go to option 2.

- Joe’s shot selection wasn’t bad. He wasn’t shooting stupid 3’s and his 2’s were fine. He didn’t execute, obviously. The fast break layups were bad. Those fast breaks also resulted from defensive plays Joe made (at least one did. I don’t really recall the other).

- We got beat in the paint in the 2nd half. Joe was late on some rotations and didn’t defend the pass to the high post as well as he should/could have. He didn’t get beat off the dribble much, but he left defensive plays on the table. Need more from an upperclassman there. Some of the deeper 3’s he (and others) let go were clearly by design. We wanted St. John’s to shoot 3’s; they suck at them.

Three games ago Bell didn’t look like a Power 5 player, but suddenly he gets unlimited rope and can make shots.

The point is we don’t know what Brown or Taylor can do because they have not had the same opportunity. They showed more glimpses than Bell before we went to NY.

Play your damn bench when you have back to back OT games.

Somebody mentioned Brown might have an injury. Idk if he does or not, but I would have liked to see him for his defensive presence. Taylor will get some more opportunity in games against cupcakes. He needs to capitalize because he’s not viewed by the staff as a contributor right now. As much as we’re all ripping the coaching, they’re still competent and capable coaches who see these guys in practice. There’s a reason, even if we don’t see it.

JB doesn't care about the media, especially anyone local.

Local media isn't going to hammer him.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Their competency is questionable at this point

I'm not sure I agree with this staff being competent. And that starts with the man in charge. There are a lot pieces on this team, but Jim has no clue right now how to puzzle them together.
Complaining about Bell's rebounding, yet playing him 35+ minutes a night is laughably dumb.

It’s kinda funny because people gripe about the “soft media” in Syracuse, and then a lot of those same people are the first to b!tch and moan about “media today” when someone gets grilled in another setting. Words like “agenda” are used.

I’d appreciate it if you’d stop saying anything about what the ‘staff’ thinks. JB don’t care what the staff thinks. His is the only opinion he’s interested in hearing.

Maybe momma Bell paid a visit to the coach and said her boy needed more than token starts….I kid I kid but it does show you that if you give kids some time they will improve. And yes I wish other kids could get the same allowances….but this happens every year with at least 1 bench player that we all want to get minutes.

This part gets really old and is likely the reason the other things you mention don't get asked. It's sarcastic self-pity that actually means "How dare you question me."

He doesn’t want to coach man because it’s demanding and you have to hold players accountable. His excuses are laughable. He also doesn’t want to have to prepare as hard for games. He doesn‘t want to take the time to have to scout all the man sets. If you play hard and have man principals, players are smart enough to adjust what different teams are running on offense. I don’t know how the other ACC teams have the time to prepare for every game playing man. Someone needs to ask JB about that. This is an example of a 78 year old just going through the motions. If you don’t want to put the time in to prepare your team to have the best chance of winning, it’s time to leave. St. John’s plays man 95% of the time. Their identity is pressure defense, but when they couldn’t contain Mintz, they went zone. They also stopped pressing in the second half to keep SU and Mintz out of open court situations. I’m tired of the same old excuses. He is not going to adjust because he wants to play his way, which is one way to the detriment of his team. If you question him he will act like he’s getting picked on like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. It’s really quite pitiful.

This. But, JAB has often said you play your best 5 as much as you can. The problem is, they get tired. When they get tired, they are lesser versions of themselves. There are ways to get your best 5 rest throughout the game without compromising too much at one time so that they have more in the tank at crunch time.
JB has always used a short bench, but over the past 5 years, he has taken this to an absurd level that has had considerable impact on player performance and player retention.

It’s also gotten shorter because he doesn’t have as much talent. That’s on him too. It’s recruiting.

I don’t disagree about needing to play another forward a bit more in the second half, at least for a few minutes to get the other guys some rest. However, regarding Bell, you can’t teach shooting but you can get him to play better defense and rebound (though that may take some time). Brown isn’t a shooter and neither is Copeland. JB wants to space the floor to allow Judah to drive and Jesse to operate in the post, and having Bell as a perimeter threat allows you to drag another defender out of the lane and also be available for a kick out.

St John’s played 9 players but one only had a minute of play, so essentially the same number of players that we did- 8. They had 3 players who went over 40 minutes, all were juniors, we only had 2 (Benny and Judah), one a freshman, the other an inexperienced soph. To me, it appeared we just aren’t in full game condition. It makes sense considering the number of freshman we are relying upon, and the more generous rotations so early in the season. I think we forget that our freshman are just starting a process realizing what it takes to be successful in college.

It was after an early season game that JB said something in his press conference that made me think.(a task I should really do more :)). When asked about evaluating their play, JB said you have to remember they are only playing against each other in practice - in other words, only games can give a true picture. We’re seeing progress, the Colgate effort would never have beaten Richmond nor been competitive against St John’s. With 6 freshman, this season will be a process, some ups, some downs, over time. The players now are starting to realize where they are stacking up comparatively to be successful, it should re-energize practice for true competitors. It’s a process.

Maliq played well in 5" against Richmond, and recall a nice pass inside just before JB sat him. Maybe he's not a shooter, but does many other things. Maliq has given a good accounting of himself in the minutes provided thus far.
Therefore, how Maliq gets zero minutes in a back-to-back with the 1st game going OT is beyond me.
If that usage continues, JB may consider Maliq expendable and pushing the portal for some reason(?)

You know exactly what I mean. You can’t suddenly make a guy who can’t shoot a good shooter. It’s something that takes years to develop. We’re not going to suddenly turn Brown into a great shooter this season.

Unless as some other posters noticed, Maliq was injured against Richmond and was unavailable last night.

Jerami Grant is the only players the last couple decades I can think of who improved his shot appreciably and it took the NBA to figure that out

Yep.

Anyhow, given the situation, Edwards should have taken it to the rim and got fouled or the bucket.

If Symir is going to shoot, then find a way to be leaning forward. Pump, duck under, elevate, and shoot (and hopefully get fouled).

Also, clear out for these 2! Benny crowded Edwards, then Edwards kinda crowded Symir. Clear out and let them operate.

But, at one point in the presser someone asked JB a question about why Edwards gets into foul trouble & he grumpily responded: "He knows. He knows. mumble, mumble. I don't know, maybe its bad coaching?' I was hollering. His pressers are a trip.
