Class of 2024 TE Michael Smith (GA) Portal flip to Ole Miss

Ole miss has more money to compensate us.
So, we didn't have him before the portal, and we dont have him now, but we have more $ now? Ok.

This guy doesn't appear to be a Cignetti-type player, so I'm fine without him.

We got a te from transfer portal from wku who actually produced. I bet Smith flops, he's quit on multiple teams, not a recipe for success
Give me production over potential. WKU kid actually did it, this kid is all “potential” and how many of those players have shined for us? Meeks is the only one who really pops to me as a transfer who didn’t produce but had potential and capitalized. I’m sure I’m missing a few, but it seems like the best transfers are the ones who actually produced to some degree at their former universities. Think McCord as the obvious example.

McCord was at Ohio State. He wasn't stepping up from a G5.

We've had quite a few FCS/G5 kids come in and fail to make an impact because it's a big step up.

I hope the WKU kid can produce like he did there at SU. But I'd also be surprised if Smith doesn't perform at Ole Miss.

I know that we've had discussions on this before (probably in this thread), but we've had more than a few WRs who have come in on potential and succeeded. Amba Etta-Tawo is the first that comes to mind.

Yea it's a crapshoot, Quinta Funderburk and CJ Hayes come to mind as flop. Hopefully these lower level guys can adjust.

Academic scholarships (aka D3 schools) are normally for 4 years. Athletic D1 are annual.
“The division's core guarantees — which include scholarship protections — are not impacted by the rules changes. If a student-athlete receiving athletics aid loses a roster spot for roster management, athletics performance reasons, or due to injury, that student-athlete's scholarship cannot be revoked unless and until the student chooses to transfer.”

Is this no longer in effect?

“The NCAA has allowed colleges to provide multiyear scholarships since 2012. Additionally, in 2015, NCAA D1 colleges from the Power Five conferences (colleges in the Football Bowl Subdivision, plus Notre Dame) agreed to implement a rule that prevented multi-year D1 scholarships from being canceled or not renewed for any athletic reason.“

He’s always my go to of, just because they didn’t do much at their previous school doesn’t mean they won’t here. In all of these, have to be confident the coaching staff can identify talent. And also realize that not every player works out, otherwise every 1st round NFL pick would work out.

My issue is, does the staff know what they’re seeing. Collins supposedly competing for the starting gig at the start of the season still has me cautious.

So my theory on this is that there was never a competition only coach speak. They knew Collins wasn’t the answer and Brought in Angeli. It was never close but publicly speaking and to have a capable backup they want to say it was close. Now this all blew up and the initial evaluation was terrible, but I think they knew pretty quick Collins wasn’t going to work which is why Angeli was brought in.

I think Fran did the right thing. Why have a kid who really doesn't want to be here? Plus it sounds like Fran, the ole Miss coach and Smith talked it out. As to compensation, reading between the lines it sounds like we got $$$. This line is somewhat telling "If a guy wants to leave then there’s certain things that have to happen.” Better than having a disgruntled player and we don't get any comp.

Agree to disagree. If signed contracts arent enforceable we quite literally have nothing left. Verbal were already garbage.

Exactly. At that point it is likely not going to be a good result if you keep the guy here. If we can get a replacement player and get some money out of it from the school he goes to then that is the best result. Its unfortunate that our initial target that we even signed didn't work out, but from everything we know its not the fault of the staff. We made the best of it and signed a pretty darn good looking TE that has produced even more than Smith had. There is no "clown show" situation here as other have stated.
