Teens beating up refs

All I can say is, if you don’t think people are less civilized today, you’re not paying attention. I don’t care what murder stats say. Go to a kids soccer game. As a ref, I can tell you referees are dealing with stuff from players that would never have happened in the last outside or very rare instances. Now it’s commonplace. Every damn day. That’s why the numbers of refs are falling in all sports.

I'd agree with that in regards to officiating. Some parents are idiots, and some of the kids are too. I think the lack of respect for authority is what is most concerning as parenting philosophies have changed. A lot of parents are afraid to really discipline. I find myself not as tough on my kids (generally speaking) as my parents were with me 25-30 years ago. And I think I'm harder on my children than most.

However, society as a whole has come a long way. The rights of women, African Americans, LGBTQ to name a few are far greater than were a generation or two ago.

a softball ump is going viral for getting punched in the face this weekend too.

In high school my friends and I reffed a youth basketball league that my mother ran and had to shove some big azzhole who was screaming in my mother's face about his kid and walking towards her like he was going to do something. Fat idiot told me I should watch who I put my hands on because he was a CO.

Had a "minor league" youth baseball coach come out to home plate and yell at me and call me an azzhole because he didn't like that I had a big strike zone for the 9 year old pitchers trying to reach home plate.

Parents ruin things waaaay more often than their kids do. Important to keep who is raising "kids these days" in mind when people bitch about younger generations.

With rights come responsibilities. We have recognized many more right, yet at the same time forgotten our responsibilities. It isn’t just sports. Agree with your comment about lack of respect for authority. Look at the issues we have respecting police authority, teachers, refs, adults in general. Hell, look at the issues we have with customers at stores or fast food restaurants. Despite the advancements you cite in rights, our civilization is devolving.

Amen

The worst part to me was other adults (refs) didn’t stop anything. Or even make an attempt.
Also pretty hard to see...although unfortunately that sort of thing runs deep in society. About 10 years ago when I was 20 living in Eastwood I got jumped and had 4 kids snatch my gold chains/bracelet at knife point, right in front of the old 7/11 on James Street. Broad daylight while multiple customers walked out looked at us and just got in the car, nobody working inside lifted a finger and of course the SPD said because I was fighting back it wasn't a robbery so try again next time. It's a feeling that people generally have I think that someone else will step in and do the right thing. Unfortunately in my experience that's not the case.

It’s in movies from that time period, often set up in a comedic way.

Just go ahead and stick your head back in the sand and pine for the days of yore.
Flying cars are in movies from that time period. Doesn't mean they existed.

This is why we had Noah’s flood. Wipe it all away and start over.

But I think we're seeing more violent crime that doesn't reach the threshold of murder across a wider segment of society.
2021/2022 data will definitely show an uptick. But still WAY below the 1990s.

And they are always the last to volunteer in anything related to their kids.

My son was playing tee ball and a parent was arguing with the ref. My kid drops his bat, walks to the pitchers mound, and tells the parents that the point of youth sports is to learn and foster good sportsmanship. That the specific skills of the game are secondary to the important life lessons gained along the way. And that sometimes he can’t tell which ones are the grown ups and which are the kids. Then everyone strod up and applauded. A single tear streaked down Joe Girards bbq sauce stained face.

Jesus...watching them jump the poor guy then run away was disgusting. Hope the ref makes a full quick recovery, those kids scattered real quick after the fact sheesh.
They should get the Juvie version of OZ

There’s ref shortages everywhere because none of them want to deal with the nonsense for a couple of 20’s on nights and weekends.

Youth league games have fewer refs and umpires in a number of areas because of this.

It’s a problem.

I’ve played and coached at a number of levels. Parents are idiots, much more frequently than their kids in most cases. Youth league coaches can be problematic more often than other levels too. But those kids of those parents and coaches will most likely grow up to be like their role models as well.

Again, I don't believe numbers tell the whole story. How many school shootings were in the 1990's? And it's not just the numbers. It's who is committing the crime and the brazen nature of it. Violence used to take place where people hoped to get away with it. Now it happens more often with the perpetrators knowing full well they'll be seen doing it and it'll likely be recorded and go viral. The nature of it is different now.
