Tennessee Postgame Discussion

Shafer as the DC was the same way; when you don't have the same physical talent, you have to attack, you have to hide your coverages, you have to do things to keep the other team off balance.

We do very little of that under Robinson. He coaches like we have top talent. And that's fine; our talent does look much better than those teams of 15 years ago.

But he's not coaching to attack; he's coaching to contain. That seems to be his nature. Try to limit mistakes by not over-committing. Our coverage makes too many mistakes, and we don't get to the QB without blitzing, at least not against the top teams.

We need to gamble more on defense. We're not a great team. And our tackling under Robinson has been poor so far. That's got to improve and soon.
I did think the tackling was better today. There was more wrapping up.

It's just the missed tackles end up being really glaring.

The fact that we had tremble playing a hybrid defensive edge / LB role says a lot about the defense. And if we don’t have the talent, we have to adjust the scheme.

They wasn’t Tremble pretty sure that was Gary Bryant they both wear 13

Pretty sure that was Matt Park being Matt Park. Didn't realize that Tremble switched to #82 today.

Did anyone screenshot the one play "on defense" he was allegedly in?

I don't see that in big games . To slow, poor reaction time, does not read defense well.
This was a big game! He led our offense to over 400 yards (minus sacks) and 24 first downs! 271 passing yards. against a top notch defense.

Angeli wasn’t perfect but I feel great about him leading the offense going forward.

This was not Devito vs Notre Dame. Angeli and the offense played good enough to win.

From what I’ve seen today against elite defenses, our offense looks better than Texas, Alabama and LSU

One more thought, for Fran to specifically coach/work with the DBs, they are not up to snuff. I figured he would’ve been able to pick up some higher quality transfers there.

He was the guy who caught the ball on the play that they reviewed for targeting right along the line of scrimmage.

Yeah, I kind of agree. There were times when we just stuffed their runs, and other times they could get 10 yards every time.

Looking back, I'm still struggling to come to terms with how bad of a performance this was defensively. Right now its looking like out of all Power 5 teams this week, we are going to have the most points given up by a wide margin ( even if we don't count the fumble return). Just completely unacceptable especially after a full off-season to prepare

I was just thinking, if people here think Angeli was “bad” today… look at the performances of a lot of the “elite” QBs today in week 1. I thought Angeli was actually showing me decent things. Made some big plays. Don’t even mention cuse Devito reminds you’d of Angeli…. Not even close

Imagine we won and Clemson does what they’re supposed to do? Would’ve been a banner day for the ACC.

Talk about missing Mr McCord. How many of his 2 min drills put us back in games last year.

Today the last 2 mins of the half and the first 2:30 mins of the 2nd half below:

Tenn
-75 yard TD drive in 1:34 with a 47 yard run
-20 yard td drive in 2 mins.

Cuse
-Angeli fumble recovered by us luckily at our 25 before half.
-Angeli interception at our 25

Sort of a miracle we bounced back a little after that disaster before and after the half.

I think the offense will improve. Alot of jitters at key moments in August.
