Texas Tech NIL Deal

I think short time it could get painful, but I think this stuff will settle out.
Eventually with the national debt getting bigger all the time, Some of these colleges are going to no longer be tax exempt.
The Big 10 and SEC will have a day of reckoning, somewhere in the future.

Understand that I am not against the kids in this case, but it is closer to the team being able to recruit 100 kids total, or be able to ignore the 25/year cap (with all its nuances). And it will, for this part of it anyway, be above board. So, it offers yet another in a long list of competitive advantages for these schools. That’s what doesn’t seem fair. Maybe I’m just whining or a bit naive. What’s your take?

I don't know what is fair.

Sure, it seems nice for a player to be able to receive $25K a year legally. But I too wonder where this is going to go.
  • Room and board
  • Tuition
  • COA stipends from the school.
  • Stipends for academic related services; $5900/yr
  • Renewable NIL deals for $25K a year

Most of these players are going to have to take a pay cut when they leave college.

Certainly, many schools will not be able to compete with this type of NIL package.

Two more points to consider.

  • How long until athletic departments start hurting because donors are giving to NIL collectives and not to athletic departments.

  • At some point in the future the model of football (and basketball) funding all other sports will no longer be attainable.

This went off the rails so quick .

This stuff has so many pitfalls, but no leadership or regulation so we'll see where it goes.

The more productive players on the team will want bigger pieces of the pie. No way they're going to want a walk on getting the same amount. Are they signing a contract that says what community service they will perform, how it will be tracked, and what happens if they don't do it? (or do they get paid after fulfilling it?)

I think you'll see the SEC and Big 10 start to put their own framework around this for their own leagues. Once they do, the rest will start doing the same.

No one will wait around for the NCAA, because college football is a sport without a leader.

You’re correct that donors are gong to get tapped out and not be able to give for campus improvements. If this has been going on for years under the table, then nothing will change.

Good, and sobering, points. (Not that I’ve been drinking…)

This is a really interesting point. This could completely backfire on these schools and if building a 25-50 mill locker room has to come directly out of athletic Dept funds….. maybe not as attainable as before. Although for some of these schools the donors have so much $ they’ll just donate to both.

Texas Tech Is going to try to do both. They haven't raised the $200 million for this but I'm sure they will in Texas.

Is it really “Community Service” when you are getting paid $25,000 for it? What if they don’t do community service-They don’t get the money ?
I remember the good ol days when community service meant wearing an orange jumpsuit, and picking up trash on the freeway as punishment for a night of drunken debauchery.
I have a feeling all it means now is play football, and promote my company.
