the crane the crane

Now Walt's operator has swung the boom somewhere over the center of the Dome. Audio - that would be good too from the operators cab.

Now Walt is back around and much attention is being paid to the BIG WHITE THING you can walk under. Seems like they are setting it up for it to be placed somewhere I hope. Also the smaller white crane has gotten in on this too. It's almost 3P.M. time that Legacy says the boys leave for the day - they can't do that without getting something done with the big white piece or can they?

Well.. at least they've gotten something wrapped around the center of the big white piece - my guess is that a cable gets attached to and they've been climbing a ladder adjusting whatever.

Tomcat/Bees do you know what this (what I stupidly call a big white piece) is? Is it part of the Cable Truss system? Anyone?

Are they going to do anything with this today OR let it sit overnight? I think we should re - name all the cranes. Walt will be Patience1, and 2 and 3 for the smaller cranes. Legacy mentioned this is like watching paint dry but I think paint dries faster than what's going on here today.

Just got back from Florida, so I am in catch up mode right now.
I am thinking maybe this box is a temporary docking area that will be used over and over to hold two pieces from the top of the crown truss that are supposed to connect together so they can be properly joined (via blocks, welding, smaller steel connectors, etc).

The box looks big enough to allow a person or two inside to do the join in a relatively safe, confined space. Maybe they will also be used to do other joins to the diagonal steel supports that hold these steel pieces up above the tension ring.

That is my best guess. My second best guess is that this is a birdhouse. Pretty sure I am wrong on that. ;)

the small white crane is beginning to do something! Just moving things around. Summary: since I've been watching from around noon off and on they have put a pale yellow collar about a third of the way down the BIG WHITE THING and left for the day.

A lot going on in the yard across from the live cam today right now - it's 4:23 P.M. and they are maneuvering the truss pieces - OT today. All the work is being done in the yard by the white crane. They are currently addressing the white piece closest to Walt. Up it goes. Now down positioning closer to the first piece which was moved about one half hour ago. So it looks like work is finished for the day with the two 60' - 70', 3' - 4" Dia. long pieces now parallel to each other block any entrance to the yard. The other one is supported 6" to 7" in the air by whatever. They must be going to do something with them tomorrow unless they moved the two to make room for more.

Walt and the other big crane are shut down, probably for all of today and tomorrow, due to high winds in the CNY area.

Sad.

I took these pictures before the game on Saturday.

The first is a closeup of what the big white pieces of steel that will comprise the roller coaster part of the crown truss look like.

The second is a look at the counter weight steel supports in the northwest corner of the Dome.

one of the braces is about a foot from the brick-faced building in the pic. I saw it when we entered Gate M.

It looks to me as though these big round pieces of steel have male and female ends, and the female end has a series of bolts to lock joins in place. Pretty cool.

So does that mean that the first pic shows the structure that will be stood up later and the current braces are only temporary? In the mock-up, there is nothing that juts outside the parameter so much as what we see there now.
