the crane the crane

Gotta take advantage of the 50 degree days.
Box girder has started its journey to the northwest corner. This one will bridge the gap to the new spiral put up yesterday and start curving towards Irving. We will start getting better looks at the process now...

The Northeast addition is almost in place...

And now it is...

The northwest corner has been ahead of the northeast corner from day one of the crown truss build. Until today.

You can start to see the radical changes in the elevation of the box girders now. Cool.
It’s amazing see it in person. The scope and scale of the project is unbelievable. Took a close look at the northwest corner backstay, cable and crown truss before game the other night. It’s awesome To see the engineering going into this

Another FYI for you folks that live in or around Syracuse. I looked at the weather for Wednesday, Christmas day and the high forecast temp is 44. How cool is that? Also this is a question for tomcat or bees or someone in the construction business. After the crew has placed a box girder on top of a spiral column why do they need to have Walt, ( and I don't know the correct name ), hold the girder in tension for so long attached at both ends? Is it because it takes so long to tighten all the bolts involved or are they making sure everything is correct, in place and will hold? Or is there another reason?

I believe the answer to this question is as follows:

When new pieces are added to the crown truss, you will note that there are always cables dangling down from the new piece as it gets rotated and put in place.

Once the piece is seated in the right place, those cables are attached to the appropriate backstay, and hydralics are used to tighten them, usually in two directions, to the point where the piece is stabilized in the correct position (the angle is really important). Then the holding cables are locked in place and the big crane can be released to do other jobs.

It was really easy and interesting to see this happen with the box girder added today to the northeast corner, from the Link Hall camera. Before the box girder got there, there were two cables holding the stand alone spiral the box girder was mounted on. They were connected to one of those yellow collars they use for temporary stabilization when a spiral is first installed.

Once the box girder was put in place, they connected the cables on it to back stays, tightened them, got perfect alignment, then released the temporary cables.

If you go back a couple of hours, you can see the cables get connected and tightened for the new box girder on the northwest corner. The angle isn't that great but you can see what is happening. At this point, it looks like Walt will be released shortly. The new cables appear to be up and pretty darn tight.

And on queue, Walt is free again.

Link Hall cam website?

So we figure the nortside gets finished over the next week or two?

I would think it is very possible, especially with ideal weather until 12/31 or so.

I think there are only 3 box girders between the two sections already in place. That should only be a couple of days of work.

But it looks to me as though, based on the length of the spiral columns in the Irving Ave storage area, they are going to add the third 'arrowhead' in each corner to complete the diagonal corners first.

I think they will put up another stand alone spiral towards the end zone next to the existing box girders, then add a box girder to bridge the gap, then add two more spirals on each side of the stand alone to complete the 3rd set of arrowheads.

Hoping that gets done this week. That will use all up the existing backstays in those directions, so unless some more backstays are installed soon, I think the next step is to bridge the gap between the existing sections, and finish the north side of the crown truss.

A Christmas wish for me would be to be there watching a column(s) go up and then a box girder - I believe I would understand everything better but thanks for your detailed explanation and Merry Christmas to all of the Crane Watchers. I hope Santa stops at your homes and you get everything you all wanted! :)

Good thoughts. Merry Christmas to All. But especially the cranies.

It’s part of the weather website that CuseLegacy has been utilizing for a while.

Here is a link to the camera.

Thank you Moontan. Wow. You really have lost a lot of snow up there in CNY. I thought they must have been kidding because I still have plenty of snow in my yard here in the Hudson Valley south of Albany. Never thought I'd see the day when we have a white Christmas and Syracuse doesn't.

Today's update:

One of the really long dark, bendy metal strips we have seen getting moved around was just set up at the Irving storage site like it is going to be installed sometime soon. No idea what it is. Part of it is hanging over the storage area fence towards Irving.

Yesterday was brutal for the snowpack. High 50’s and sun all day.

They are putting those mysterious bendy metal straps into place now. It looks like they are extra strong cables that will be used to augment the normal cables the hold the crown truss in place.

Kind of like a wonder bra.

It's 12:30 on the day after Christmas and there is a lot going on. Walt just lifted something over to the far side of the new crown truss and it looks like the smaller white crane is getting ready for something - reporting from crane watch central. FYI: My error, there is a carriage for the crew and Walt just lifted two of them from the top of the recently installed box girders nearest the camera or near it over part of the top of the Dome down into the yard to drop them off. Never knew there was a little shuttle for the crew and that Walt can give them a ride. The carrier is Red and is still resting on the ground near the spiral steel column. And now suddenly lunch time is upon us!

After lunch look out! I'll bet the crew that was carried from the near crown truss over the top and the side of the Dome may be taking a ride back up? I still think the white crane is readying for something also.

The white crane operator is not taking a lunch break. I saw him exit the cab about five minutes ago climbed down and is now talking to a fellow Hayner Hoyt crewman. It seems to me that they are waiting for a trailer full or spiral steel columns - we'll see.
