the Wisky tradion of jump around at the start of the

I'm one of those SU fans that hates the traditions, at least as far as pre-planned choreographed pseudo performance art goes. That stuff might look good on TV, but it's not any fun to participate in. Sports are live and spontaneous, the cheering should be too. The few traditions SU has (standing and clapping at the start of basketball games etc) I mostly don't like and would prefer to get rid of.

All I want are the people who come to feel more free to cheer the way they want. Have a family/sit down section (could be a large hunk of the Dome.of that is what's needed) where people are expected to have manners. The rest of the Dome, if you want to stand and yell all game, go for it. If you want to bring a big drum and beat on it ... go for it so long as you buy the drum a seat. Make sure there are places where fans feel welcome to get a little crazy.
As a long time STH, there were many times over the years when the Dome was crazy and so loud you literally could not hear the person sitting next to you if you wnated to say something. The Clemson win was the last time it came close to what it used to be. The McNabb years, the TE throw back to beat VT, Owen's conversion, the Auburn game following 9/11 was something I'll never forget in the Dome. We need to get that feeling back in there. It's awesome.

The potential is there even without the choreographed celebrations (does the Wave count?). We need to WIN. A functional PA system should help...

To each his or her own, I guess. In my opinion, you’re missing out on what makes college sports great. My daughter is a freshman at UVA, and she’s already leaned their various songs and chants. It makes the experience so much richer. But que sera sera, you are clearly in the majority when it comes to SU fans.

It’s comical when people suggest the SU band and cheer teams should be better, and then steadfastly refuse to do *anything* participatory that the band and cheer teams try to lead.
Partially agree, There is a core of about 20,000 fans that are always there and are great fans. Then the rest, when it’s a big game the latter become engaged and the Dome is alive. For the “regular “ games they sit on there hands and eat and drink and head out during the end of the third quarter.

How many of those 20k sing the fight song or Alma mater? How many do any of the chants the band or cheerleaders lead? I’m guessing 10% tops.

That’s everywhere.. just at the factory schools, on a larger attendance scale.

I’ve been to Clemson, South Carolina, Florida etc.,.. and at every game you have your core fans that stay in their seats all game, to the final whistle.. and then you have your casuals who are half engaged, disappear from their seats for 30 minutes at a time and then leave if/when the game is in hand.

It’s just more noticeable in the Dome than it is in 80k-90k stadiums.

If we had consistently bigger crowds, and a better on-field product, I guarantee you the energy would sweep up half the casuals. The other half are just typical of anywhere.

Been to a lot of away games. The best ( in the stadium atmosphere) I have been in is a stadium that gets so loud that I can literally scream at the top of my lungs and not hear myself. Unfortunately this place doesn’t have any Wisconsin jump around, Florida Tom Petty, Va Tech Enter Sandman, type traditions and certainly they should be able to come up with one. That Stadium is somewhere around the central part of NYState. Forgot the name I don’t even think they know the name, something about an air conditioning company controversy.
Great stuff there. “Ooh Ungawah!”
Smuggling in a keg in a coat? The stuff of legends.

I love things like a random oldie song getting adapted by a band and becoming part of the traditional fan experience. I guess to some degree we have that with “Hey Baby!” Those types of things need to be organic. But when they catch on, it’s beautiful.

I love the tradition of the players and the band playing/singing the alma mater after every game. We just have to get the fans to stay for it too.

I am a fairly intense , enthusiastic fan, I don’t know the words to the alma mater. Other places I have been the student body much larger part of the attendance. That’s one problem .

My point. There are schools in other parts of the country (forget the south, I’m talking like PA and MA) where *everyone* knows the fight song and Alma mater, whether they’re alums or not.

Where, I’ve been to Rutgers, UConn, BC, and Pitt, UB, didn’t happen any of those places.

BC fans know For Boston. UConn fans do that inane “C-O-N-N” chant. Both have more in game participation than SU does, which is pathetic.

I simply disagree, spontaneous “Let’s Go Orange Chants often break out around the Dome, unless we’re getting pummeled. I was at the last BC game , No people sang for Boston, I was not near the students. The UConn game was way back in Coach P era don’t remember it too well to be honest. Pitt nothing, Rutgers nothing, UB , there were more SU fans, same at Temple. Actually the UConn game may have been Marrone, I know we lost and some dude got in my face as I was walking out and was harassing me and I hadn’t said a single thing.

That’s fine. There isn’t a cheer SU fans do besides Let’s Go Orange, which literally every other fanbase of every sport in the country does. Our fans show up, that’s great. They travel, that’s great. They just don’t do stuff, which is disappointing. It is what it is, and it’s not changing because most SU fans actively hate cheers.

I’ve been to quite a few games in Syracuse and, since moving to Long Island, and now down south, a ton of away games.

It’s a strange situation in how our home field football advantage is pretty lame lately, yet multiple fanbases of opposing teams have mentioned to me how well we travel. Of course, much of that is the NY exodus to the south, but there is clearly passion in this fanbase to be tapped into.

Not saying we’re a great fan base by any means, but the loathing often goes too far IMO.

Went to the Florida home opener in The Swamp last night, and they always sing “I won’t back down” by Tom Petty in the timeout entering the 4th Quarter.

Everyone holding their phone lights up, night game, 86k singing along.. chills.

Unable to post the video here, but this is a screenshot from the video I took.

I think thats relatively new. Believe they started that after Tom passed away.

I like Tim Petty a lot. We could do "Even the Losers".

Petty is from Gainesville. We could sing Benny Mardones.
Andy Mineo is from Syracuse. This song could work.. For the student section, at least. The “comin in hot” beat drop is definitely a vibe.

That song is 29 years old. Glad to see that a bunch of college aged kids get the same enjoyment out of it that kids of my generation did during high school dances.
BuT kIdS tOdAy don't lIkE tHInGs wE uSeD tO lIkE. Great example of how you get thre fans pumped, the players will get pumped. Agree Dash that was pretty cool.

Only 4 years old and it’s awesome! It’s just a more involved fan base all around though. Things are different in the south (or different in CNY).

We chant let’s go orange, occasionally in unison. And people try to do the wave.

That’s the list.

But more people wear orange to games than back in the 90s, so there’s that. Couple more orange outs and maybe we won’t have to have orange outs anymore.
