there is no way that SS should be fired after

Jones took over a team from scratch and got them bowl eligbile. PJ Fleck went from 1-11 in his first year to 8-5 in his second year, Norvell is an offensive genius and is believed to be an upcoming HC. Campbell and Holliday would be top 2 choices. SS is rumored to be making around 1.5 per year.

Norvell is who I want as our next coach.

And hell thus froze over...
fwiw: you made me search this whole thread till i could put that in context too...

I don't believe we take partial qualifiers, which is higher than the NCAA minimums. Second, the staff (to their credit) has prioritized recruits that can handle the academic load -- this is why the average GPA of the 2015 class is over 3.0. That's not stanford, but it's not even close to the minimum either. Lastly, our kids have to attend legitimate college-level classes ... which we all know is not always the case in P5 programs.

SU has taken partial qualifiers recently. I don't put a ton of stock into the HS GPA's as if you look at the SU body, I believe that SU Admissions says the avg of incoming kids is somewhere above a 3.5. I just mean that no one on campus is saying no to a qualifier because of academics, while we have landed two recruits who were rejected by Stanford- one of whom was just named an All-ACC Academic team member (West).

SU admitted Edouard and who knows what ended up causing his failure to qualify, but he was admitted to the University.

Since I had no idea who any of those guys are, I took a look. I don't see how Jones is an exciting option. His teams have been 14-24 over the last 3 years and lost 5 of their last 6 games last year. At 52, is he still considered up and coming? With Mike Norvell I'm sure some would complain that we've gone the zero head coaching experience route before and that didn't get us anywhere. PJ Fleck has those WMU and NIU connections that we all know and love. His 2 years of HC experience brings along a record (9-16) pretty comparable to Shafer's (10-15). Which leaves us with Holliday and Campbell. Campbell has a good record in his 3 years at Toledo and is pretty young at 35. he also just signed an extension through 2020, although I can't fine exactly what he's making. Doc's got a proven track record and is making just north of 600K. From the salaries that I could find, 2 million looks like a big jump for any of these guys, and a big jump for SU as well. We'll see how it all plays out. I for one am hoping that Shafer rights the ship.

Out of that list Doc Holiday should be option A through D. I think Pittsburgh made a mistake in not hiring him this year, instead deciding to go with Narduzzi. Holiday is a proven winner, he has an offensive background, and can really recruit (although i'd like to see how he does at a place that actually has some standards that need to be met).

But let's hope we don't need to make another coaching change for a while.

REALLY?

I just can't believe some of the thought processes in this thread.

As I have said before...if you keep doing the same things but expect different results - definition of insanity.

Whatever the results - HCSS has changed things. Lester as OC, Acosta as WR coach, new TE/OT coach (forgot name). We also got the IPF and HCSS changed up Spring practice schedule to maximize length of spring season and maximize time for players spend on exams. Finally looks like practices have changed to get back to real S&C, not just speed training.

HCSS has changed things so let's expect different results! Stop b$tching people. Nuff said.

Not sure about that .. once edouard failed to qualify, he was required to attend junior college. I don't know of any other such admissions that did not involve junior college (we sent one PQ to Mich. state). As far as being rejected by Stanford, that doesn't mean anything .. some kids that didn't get into Stanford wind up attending other (Ivies), or visa versa. So that certainly doesn't mean that someone is an academic casualty or PQ.

Not trying to be antagonistic here...just curious chakka, with all those "changes" how "different" do you expect the results to be for the 2015 season?

Can't call a guy out without throwing your prediction in...

I say 7-8 wins.

My point about Stanford was to say that they have rejected students who were strong academically, which can work against their coaches when it comes to recruiting. It wasn't to say they were bad students, but also pointing out that SU isn't that selective when it comes to football (and other sports) recruits.

As for Edouard, he was accepted by SU. Something obviously came up, but he was on campus for classes last summer with the rest of the freshmen class-maybe the admission was then revoked.

Didn't call him out, you are making assumptions.

6 wins - going to be significant dogs against FSU, Clemson, L'ville and LSU. Have to go 6-2 against the rest to get to a bowl. Bowl = success next year. Anything short of that, and it is not unreasonable for people to question this staff.

Fair enough.

No good QB then.
Good QBs can win bowl games. We've got one of them, in his first year starting. We saw bad QBs this past season, but we've seen what one is capable of doing.

Marshall HC Doc Holiday
Western Michgan HC PJ Fleck
Toledo HC Matt Campbell
Arizona State OC Matt Norvell
South Alabama HC Joey Jones

Here are 5 young up and coming coaches(except Holliday isn't that young) with exciting offensive minds and most with HC experience. I don't want a defensive coordinator as the next HC. We could probably get all of these coaches for about 2 million per year starting.

I don't know about the others, but there's no way Coach Jones is leaving USA, voluntarily. Not anytime soon, anyways, and I know this for an absolute fact.

Y'all know that the 247 USA board were calling for his head after the first few games of the year, right? Wanted to fire the whole damn staff. Now, he's like the second coming of Bryant since USA went to the Camellia Bowl.

Fans are fickle.

What about the OL coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars? I hear he has head coaching experience. I kid, I kid.

You and your family would know this dealing with the man. All I want is to win games. I have no bias agains any coach. With 76 bowl teams I just feel our progr should be top 76 every year or pretty much every year and should not go 2 years in a row not top 76.

I'm going to be honest here: I think that Scott Shafer seems like a great dude, and I'm not sure what kind of coach he is. However, if he can get a commitment from Robert Washington, then I will be 100% against firing him no matter what our record is in 2015. If he can get Washington, and the snowball effect that should/will create for our 2016 recruiting class, then you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT FIRE HIM.

If we don't get a commit from Washington, well, then I'm a little more lenient on what happens if we crap the bed in 2015. But if we get Washington, and start putting together a monster class...you DO. NOT. FIRE. HIM. Washington loves Shafer and his staff. Don't do anything to screw up a potentially program altering class by changing the coaching staff. Please.

Please please please please please.

honest question, but is robert washington supposedly this good? Like a no doubt about it, program transforming type of running back?

He's very good. But he's a potentially program transforming player as much for what he could do OFF the field, as on it. He's extremely friendly with a TON of big time prospects, and plans on sending all summer working toward recruiting the best possible recruiting class he can get around him. THAT'S where his absolute transformative impact comes from. He's friends with a ton of 4-star recruits who have all talked about playing with him in college. Getting Washington could potentially open the door to one of our best recruiting classes in a very, very, VERY long time. Like, top 10-15 range, potentially.

I'm not saying we should go shady and buy a player, but if we went all Blue Chips on this... I'd understand.

I think his acceptance was conditional on qualifying academically - this is not unusual.

Definitely think that we should be in the hunt for bowl games, being mindful, though, that in some years, it just isn't going to happen. Building a powerhouse program takes time, and it's more than just coaches and players. AD and administrative support must also be in place. Fan support is just as important.

TexanMark is spot on..i see 7 wins as well. Can we stop blowing this trumpet and move on to next year guys?
