There's only been on Coach in the last 35 years

You mean "What" losses. Teams like Tulane, NC State...heck, he had 2 or 3 What losses in McNabb's senior season alone. We should have been undefeated going into the bowls.

Tulane? When did that happen?

1998, lost to the eventual national champion, on the road to NCST (7-5) and WVU (8-4), and in the bowl to UF (10-2).

Which one of those is a What?

Yeah, first losses to FSU (11-2), OSU (8-3-1), BC (9-3), OU (6-6), ECU (9-3), UNC (10-2), NCST (6-5), UT (13-0), UM (10-2), Cinci (7-5), GT (8-5), BYU (5-7), Lville (9-4), Purdue (7-5).

Not a whole lot to be embarrassed about there.

Well over 20% of those are bad losses so...

What I love is that Go is standing on that wall, making sure he can give us a hearty "I told you so" if or when Shafer doesn't get the job done here.

As if most of the board is totally sold on him.
He and I aren't on the same side much but I am not sold on SS. Our offense looked better in the 1st and 4th quarters but people want to ignore the middle. I believe Dungey looks really solid but the team isn't vastly improved yet IMO.
I will say the team speed looks a lot better and that is a credit to SS.

I'd say losing by 3 TDs to NC State was a What loss, but that's just me but I suppose simply losing to them wouldn't be.

Cheers,
Neil

I thought the O was pretty good all game. The 1st Q we didn't finish drives but we moved the ball. The 2nd Q we had 2 quick drives. The first we went for the trick play, which was there. The second maybe you can nitpick the 3rd down call. The 3rd Q started badly but in fairness the O hadn't taken a snap in over 30 minutes. The rest of the game we played well.

It takes time. The guy they honored at half time yesterday took 7 years to bring real good football to the Hill. I'm not saying give SS 7 years but to be fair, he has to coach his own kids. A realistic look at this season no matter who was coaching us, we have 3 certain losses, one most probable loss and one certain win and 1 most probably win. That gives us really a 6 game season where we have to win 4 of the 6 games. I don't really think it is fair to micro manage from afar how the team looks during a game. We won. A game we had to win. SS has to improve as a coach. Bill B. got fired by the Browns. It takes time to learn your craft. He goes 6-6 with this schedule, that would be terrific in my book

If we beat CMU, will we get a post saying if we lose to USF it negates everything because no Syracuse coach has ever lost to an AAC team (technically).

Well that's our #1 road game so we can only hope. ;)

Honestly though, couldn't you chalk the inconsistent offense up to the fact that we've got so little experience on the field, as much as it can be put on the coaches? We've got a true freshman QB, a stable of RBs who have fairly limited experience, collectively, and a brand new offense I'm sure half the kids are still trying to grasp. Add in the fact that our best offensive weapon was injured, and that's a recipe for some ups and downs on offense.

Straw man alert! Who is ignoring the middle?

Yep - biggest issue was giving up 1st downs on D to keep drives alive. Time of possession.

NC ST AND WVU -- we had WAY more talent than them

Nothing I posted is an attack on Shafer.

Serious? C'mon man we got people yelling 2-0 and are ignoring the middle of that game. You honestly should know better. If I am anything I am consistent.

I agree and I didn't insinuate you were. I said you and I are on the same page on SS. I do not hate SS I find his coaching frustrating at times but believe he loves SU but I would like another HC. You haven't said what I have said.
I gave the man credit for improving our speed. If I am going to be critical I am going to give praise when its warranted.

You watched the Pats last thursday I'm sure. at the end of that game did you say, yeah the Pats won but did you see the end when Pitt was scoring and moving the ball?

Pats D was garbage they got torched the whole game. I said Pitt has a really good offense and the Pats front 7 better improve.
Pitt deserved more than 21 points. If they scored more the NE offense would have still outscored them though.
I didn't feel at the end of the game that was a 2 TD difference the final score was fair.

I don't think you are being fair. As I said earlier, it takes time. Coach Mac's first three years were something like 4-6-1, 2-9 and 6-5. The next three weren't much better. SS needs to improve his coaching along with the talent on the team to get where we need to be. But it is way too early in my book to say that we need a new coach. Recruiting is getting a a bit better. Let's see what this staff can do with their guys.

I think that is setting the bar way too low. You shouldn't lose at home to Rhode Island, Wake, or CMU. You should be probably beat USF and should probably lose to Louisville. You shouldn't be able to beat LSU, FSU, or Clemson. That leaves 4 games to win 2 not 6 games to win 4.

And if you want to be "fair" to have the coach bring in his own kids then Shafer needs at least 5 years because of the new OC. On D he has recruited kids for his system for 7 years now. The change in HC shouldn't matter. The O however we have only recruited to the system for 1 year. Most of the kids were brought here for McDonald's O, which is why we have so many bodies at WR.

I make no bones that SS lost me after the ISIS PC after the UL game. A HC never should behave like that ever. I like SS he seems like a good person but our coaching staff in the ACC is bottom third. We as SU FB fans have to stop being concerned with being a stepping stone job and embrace that and get the best coach we can. Who if they turned us around would move on.

Coach Mac didn't take over the same level program. The 3 years prior to Mac SU was 15-19 while for Shafer it was 21-17. Also Shafer was at SU he had the advantage of D kids that were recruited and knew his system. He also knew the O players and what system was best for them.

I think a new coach should get 5 years unless he is a g-rob type disaster. Losses to FSU, Clemson, LSU and the Ville. I am starting to think about putting the Ville back in the possible winnable games but can't bring myself to do it just yet. Rhody and CMU are wins. Wake was not a given. Not a toss up but not a given. And there is no way you can say that South Florida on the road is a sure win. I don't care if Lombardi is coaching us. Going is, we have 2 wins and 4 losses. We have won one of the other games so it is not 3 wins in 5 games.

who has managed to dishonor this program by losing to a MAC team.

It's nice to be 2-0, but that's against the worst FCS team and worst team in the ACC. Easiest opening two games in at least those 35 years.

Losing to CMU would negate that completely.
Wow you need to get laid

Way too early for that. And quite frankly, you or I have no idea where our coaching staff ranks in the ACC. Not exactly even playing fields we are starting off at. I suggest if Dungey turns out to be the next Tom Brady, SS will look a lot smarter. There is going to be plenty of ammo to attack SS with the year. We have some games where we will look very bad. And by the way, I was around from the start of Jb and if you are turned off by SS ISIS remark, you would have let jb go years ago.
