Things i'm hearing...

According to this Ch9 article the announcement was going to be a few days later.

This jives with what I just responded to sabach with. I'm going to get confirmation. After re-reading my initial post, it feels like some of the folks I know were trying to spin that the PC was an honest mistake and JB was just trying to hold it together. It may have been Jim launching a broadside at SU for not working with him on a position at the university and trying to force them into more discussions before the final press conference.

If that's the case, that press release was their response to his kind of soft ultimatum in the post-game. I will talk to some of them later today and see if I can get clarification.

this is going to gey messy. he wants a job in athletics, and SU said no
To do what?

There has to be some functional role in order to have a job. And the way he has acted and submarined things the last 4-5-6 years, what would he do?

Add that to the hovering angle that has already been mentioned... and there is very little upside to keeping him on staff.

I think what he probably wanted to say is ‘I’m not retiring from SU but will be stepping away from coaching’ and maybe that wasn’t worked out - hope he didn’t mess that up too.

Not to mention I'm sure the AD isnt budgeted for a high salary position to basically do nothing
Yep. I'm baffled that there is some expectation that he be handed a lucrative, no-show job.

This ain't the mob.

Guy has all the money he could ever hope to spend in his remaining years on Earth, and his family is set up for long after that. Go get a TV gig (he'd be great at it) or start a non-profit or something.

Why would SU require JB to announce his retirement in the presser following the last game of his career which would have to be a loss unless they won the Natty. That is asking a lot IMHO.

Why not have the plan in place, have JB say at the presser that we will talk about it and then have a presser today or Friday and announce it all so that AA is in place before the portal opens Monday.

They didn't want him to announce his retirement in the post game presser. That's just dumb because no one even knew what the outcome of the game was going to be; one in which he lost on a buzzer 3 ball.

But there WAS clearly a plan in place, except JB decided in the presser 'not yet' and he changed his mind. He went rogue when he decided to say, “They have to make their decision and it’s up to them,” “I hope we can make an agreement but that remains to be seen.

So they pulled the trigger because JB wasn't going to stick to the plan. There was obviously already an agreement in place with Autry (and that agreement wasn't done behind Jim's back either.)

You know, maybe it wasn't intentional on JB's part. Maybe Jim tried to ad lib it a bit yesterday and horsed it up by footing around the wording to try and preserve the mystery and protect the announcement back home. You know, tried to do it in his words. Once damage was done and confusion created, SU had to change course. Just a thought.

He's already got a great Non Profit. I agree he would be great on TV because he hopefully would actually say what he thinks not just "coach speak"

And rightly so.

It would be an impossible situation for Red & staff to have the HOF legend hovering over everything they do.

They took the keys away from Grandpa, and sold the car.

These things often need to be done this way when an older person is blind to their own shortcomings and limitations.

Yeah - he made his bed and now has to sleep in it.

Can't be trusted to do the right thing - that's how he went out.

He certainly can't be trusted to the right thing in a new, alternative athletic department position, either.

AD isn't gonna be twice-bitten by him.

It's an absolute non-starter and I certainly don't blame them one bit - it's just sad.

Maybe if he tries to mend fences on the hill and shows real contrition, over time, he could be in the window for something like that... but not right now.

Also, I am not sure his ego will allow him to do any of that.

I sense that the original post is largely correct, except that the proper time for him to retire is in Syracuse, after a meeting with his team and a handshake with Autry (and a subsequent presser). Not in Greensboro, 5 minutes after a tough loss.

That could have been/should have been slated for Monday, after the ACC Tournament (the ACC Tourney sort of got overridden by this news, at least for a 12-hour period, which is unfortunate).

I think JAB's "ask the university, it is their decision" line(s) harken back to the Pete Thamel interview (or at least its aftermath). Yes, a passive-aggressive play, but it helps sooth him after a tough loss. Old habits die hard.

I do absolutely hope that the OP is correct, as to me, that would mean the two sides are not so far away from finishing things off in an amicable fashion. Yesterday was less than ideal (starting with the loss to Wake), but not the end of the world. This will end well and JAB will become the elder statesman of SU hoops/athletics, as he should be.

JB told the team after the presser that he was out and Red would be the new coach. That may have played a role in the quick statement by SU. It would have leaked out quickly.

A few things:

1. Represent SU, and SU BB, as a famous and revered figurehead, with a focus on donors, ex-players, recruits, appropriate outside organizations, etc.
2. Support the coaching staff: assess opponents, give feedback on team players and performances, help develop the team on a lecture basis (zone, etc.).
3. Help recruit assistant coaches.

This would require an office, not a big salary. It would not be a 40 hour per week job.

What is the job description for K and Roy?

Everyone knew they question about retirement was going to be asked in the presser, and I think there was a pre-planned response to that question. I think as others have speculated that there were different roles for JB being discussed. JB didn't want to completely give up the life while the university was making sure to protect Adrian and allow him to make his own decisions without any blow back. I am sure JB deviated from the script and by repeatedly mentioning it was up the the university forced their hand. The question is if the university had a knee jerk reaction and should have handled it differently. I think they felt they had let JB be JB so many times in the past, and they had been directed him to play nice. The last few presses have been a lot calmer, less snarkly than the typical JB pressers. I think the school was also under a lot of pressure from the ACC to keep him reigned in. When JB spoke in the final presser the straw finally broke the camels back and the university released the statement. They kept it as classy as they could but left no room for doubt. JB may have also just shut the door on any opportunity he may have been given at the school. Time will tell.

Haha, it's funny because it's true!

Also, painful!
It couldn't have happened any other way. JB was a lock to go off script, and the idea of making the announcement immediately after the team's next loss and not handling it in a dedicated press conference back in Syracuse was ludicrous.

and none of the players mentioned that when they were asked post-game? In no way doubting your info. but didn't the paper have guys say "i haven't been told anything on the coach"?

I think Roy's job is to attend every UNC game and have a worried look on his face.

That's interesting... wouldn't have predicted him to tell the team like that with emotions still raw.
