Today Dino needs to be locked up

*after year #1

The most extreme position I remember hearing here was mine: he’d be on the hot seat (6+ wins or out) NEXT year IF he went 4-8 THIS year (for the 3rd time in a row).

No reasonably sane human would leave a multi million dollar a year job with close to zero expectations and a system that’s clicking for a reality where he’d endure 2 years of death threats (his system takes 1.5-2 years to implement).

Also, no reasonably sane human at the age of 57-58 would leave a system that’s clicking to take a lateral to a system that’s a mess.

And lastly, no reasonably sane person is going to leave a system that’s clicking for a clear step down without some other motivating factor (i.e. a personality conflict with the AD).

So unless anyone can find a vertical move that has low expectations, I’m not worried about losing Dino.

Dino + Syracuse is good for everyone involved. Elite programs push the boundaries of sanity.

agree 100%.

Here's another good one making the rounds today. Dabo Swinney threatening to leave Clemson because their fans aren't happy with 12-0 and a #2 ranking. That's what coaching at a factory gets you - batsit crazy fans and not in a good way.

Dabo Swinney pops off on teleconference about ungrateful fanbase, threatens to leave

That is how Louisville runs things.

OP, have you thought about sending an email Wildhack? It may be exactly what is needed to make an extension happen.
This! I would hope there would be an announcement this week for recruiting purposes.

I have no idea why we wouldn’t pay. A good coach is worth many millions in terms of direct revenue (ticket sales, merch sales, etc), millions in indirect revenue (donations, etc.), and millions an ancillary benefits (exposure, school spirit, etc.)

Dino is a great coach. Past hires indicate that his replacement may not be (it’s hard to hire great coaches). We should absolutely NOT be cheep and pay the man.
Great post

4.5 is far too high too. And the post I responded to had previous suggested that it should be $1-2m higher than what another person suggested as 3.6-4.1. So my post was to him not the whole board.
And I can agree to disagree. We want a top 20 program so pay him top 20 money. That’s all and that number is 4.2-4.5. I wouldn’t say 5 either until we are 8n playoffs lol

Totally. I mean, it's pretty likely that Wildhack hasn't even thought of doing what is necessary to retain Babers. I mean, it's like, probably not even on his radar. Why won't he think of doing something?! Why do we need to think of this stuff for him?!?!?!

Has he thought of buying him a thoroughbred racehorse and letting him build a paddock and training facility at Skytop? I didn't think so.

Are you saying that you didn't think of that idea? Or that you didn't think that Wildhack thought to think of that thought? Or vice versa?

In all seriousness, will we even (officially) know if an extension is done? Syracuse seems to keep contracts pretty close to the vest.

People do realize that Syracuse has never lost a coach to another college program right? Like at least since Schwartzwalder era a coach has never left Syracuse to go take a job at another college. Some posters and commentators on other blogs honestly act like Syracuse has always been a stepping stone program when in reality another school has never lured a coach away from us (now in honestly some of those coaches didn't deserve to be lured away even by a division 3 team so there's that).

I think we have a lot working in our favor including the fact that Dino has now seen he can not just win here but be a contender. The CFP committee ranking us as high as 12th with 2 losses shows that if we win we will get the respect we deserve being in the ACC. Why would he leave to rebuild another program when he can start next season probably close to being ranked and who knows, with 2 fourth down stops he can have a playoff contender.

Second he is an alumni of Hawaii, not exactly a football powerhouse so we wont have a Scott Frost Jeff Brohm situation on our hands.

Finally we can pay him. I know we all think Syracuse is cheap and wont pay up cause of his salary now and past coaches salaries but recently all we have had were first time P5 coaches. We probably haven't been in give a coach a getting a raise situation since coach P. We've been able to fund a championship basketball program for years and I know its a little different but I think when push comes to shove we will take care of football just fine.

Honestly what I will be watching is the NFL coaching carousel cause even though Dino is a college guy the NFL is going all offense and after seeing the saints, chiefs and rams do so well owners are gonna pay top dollar for offensive minds and well Syracuse has been more snake bitten losing coaches to the NFL than college.

The last twenty years of Syracuse football coaching consists of a declining Coach P, Greg Robinson, the guy who thought Syracuse was his dream job until he actually had to coach in college, and Scott Shafer so yeah color me shocked that we haven’t lost a coach to another college program in a very long time.

I agree the sample size is poor but it has happened with every coach that has had a little success even. I seem to remember after Shafer got 6 wins people talking about schools coming after him. I understand that we can't compete with a USC per se but some of the schools that people throw in the mix here are kinda crazy. If UCF loses their coach again are people gonna be worried about Dino jumping ship to them?

Papa John money drying up
Papa John money is gone. I advise to a company that just put 40M into PJ to help fund their way out of the PR mess they are in. There will be no money coming from them.

Yea, it doesn’t work that way.

It might not but it should. That’s fair market value. We don’t do that or haven’t and that’s why we sucked for so long. We have a guy who can put us where we should be and ur saying we probably won’t offer fair market value then in my opinion he will be gone. I get ur sliding scale and it makes sense just at what point does Dino say u don’t want a winning team and moves on. We have it made with Jimmy here cause he is happy for basketball but that rarely happens. If I want the best carpet guys or flooring u pay the best install prices to get them. I can’t offer an installer 2/3 what everyone else is getting and hope does a good job. Always remember u get what u pay for. Look at our 3 coaches before. Marrone ok but other 2 cheap and that’s the problem. At some point down the road it will effect the recruiting until he is locked up.
