Tony Bennett retiring

How? He quit 20 days before the season starts. That is quitting on your team.

It's also conveniently timed so that the university has no choice but to name an interim coach from his staff.
Yes, Sanchez is the interim and may have a leg up on being selected as the next HC. However, Carla Williams, the Athletic Director, stated flat-out that there will be a national search for the new HC at the end of the season.

Tell that to the NBA. "One and one" isn't a creation of the NCAA; it's part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NBA owners and Players' Association. You can call it the "Help keep us from drafting another Kwame Brown" rule.

The central problem with all of this is that there is no viable minor league system in basketball and football like there is in baseball. It would be great if the NBA adopted the same rule as baseball does IRT to the amateur draft, there's a "look" coming out of HS (age 18), but if you go to college, you can't be redrafted until you turn 21 (3 years). If the NBA owners and PA made it part of the CBA, there shouldn't be any legal problems.
Give it a like but don't see the interest by the NBA. They can develop other evaluation methods and prep schools get the marketing started...see Cooper Flagg. Think the NBA owners don't see it as their job to save college basketball from itself. Think they are also tiring of bailing out WNBA which per NY Post article is on track to lose 40 million this year.

There was some rumbling on the part of the owners during the last CBA negotiation about getting rid of "one and done," but nothing came of it.

It's not the minor league thing, it's so veterans can keep their job. The NBA hasn't been bad at picking HS kids. I'm not sure why this is perpetuated.

41 HS guys have been drafted. Three are in the HoF and another 3 are going to get into the HoF. Another 4, on top of that, made at least an all star game. Some of the guys outside of those ten are CJ Miles, Monta Ellis, Darryl Dawkins, Al Harrington, Shaun Livingston, Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, JR Smith, Lou Will, Amir Johnson.

Against where they were picked, the picks have a very good hit rate. 11 of the 41 were second round picks.

Kwame Brown was picked by Michael Jordan, one of the worst personnel people in the history of the NBA. If Kwame went third or fourth, his career would be fine. He played 12 years and made over $60M.

National search? What's that? Never heard of it... /s

Hope you all find a great next coach Hoo's That, Bennett was one of the good ones.

There's something very wrong with a system that essentially forces out the two best coaches of the past 20 years in Jay Wright and Tony Bennett.

BUT...Tony Bennett put the current UVA team together. He's a major reason some or all decided to go there. He owes it to them to "force himself" to complete this season.

He could have announced his retirement after the season and given the school a year to make its search for a replacement.

Bottom line: he may be right to get out. But he's wrong to do it 20 days before the start of the new season.
