Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

Oh for sure. Put your best guys out there. I think Ross is going to be a stud. I just like having a guy out there like Erv Phillips, Estime, Peña, etc…that has some wiggle, fast, quick and can make some guys miss. But guys like JRS and Ross are big physical guys which are nice to obviously lol. As long as we have someone to stretch the field which Gill is more than capable of doing
Yes. Agree. Can definitely use some wiggle out there as well.

Though saddened that we won't see him play for SU, I'm not sure how to feel about this. There are a lot of factors that went into his decision, most of which I know little about. This may best his best opportunity to make significant money, ever. It's tough to criticize a young man when one perspective he has to be focused on is that he may never have another chance to profit from the one year of his life where he truly thrived. The future carries no guarantees. He almost didn't have that opportunity due to previous injuries. I'm mostly saddened that SU isn't in a competitive position with our peers. If it was a close decision, i have to think he'd stay. I do wish him well and appreciate his part on one of our best teams since Pasqualoni. I do think that contracts could help the chaos. Anyhow, thank you, Trebor. Best wishes
I have wondered if contracts would help and I am not sure if possible, maybe someone can shed some light on it, but I’ve wondered if the “New” school of the player would have to pay the amount he would have paid( by SU) to the school losing the player, I wonder if it would be help slow things down. I also have to wonder if agents are free lancing looking for a bigger commission, when in reality the player opened spring ball with no intention of leaving.

Man, Pena was all DART. He has been detailed, Accountable, Relentless and Tough His entire time at SU.

He has also shown he was committed to the program, that he cared about the program and that he could be trusted. Perhaps he came to a crossroad where he began to question if the program was committed to him, cared about him (as much as another program cared) or if he could trust the program to step up when another program has indicated they would step up.

Commitment, Care and Trust works both ways.

Nothing tells someone you care like telling them “if you want to go, go already” when someone starts to question their choices and seeks guidance. I’m not saying this happened with Pena, but apparently this has happened more than once.
If that was the case, he could and should have left in December. He agreed to a deal to stay. Syracuse honors its end of the contract -- he decided not to. Someone came along and offered him more and Syracuse decided not to change the deal. At some point kids have to realize that's how the real world works. There will always be the opportunity to chase money or something else -- you decide what you want to prioritize. I dont begrudge any kid who chases the opportunity to maximize their worth. But at the same time, the school and Fran has every right to say no.

Of course the agents are looking for more money. It's what they do. But the player is the boss in these relationships. This kid made a deal with Syracuse. He was named captain. A leader. I don't and never blame someone looking for more money. But, at a point, your word either means something or it doesn't.

We have 100 kids on the roster and 22 coming in over the summer. There has to be a lot more heading to the portal.

No one is questioning that... we are questioning the star WR and team captain going to the portal tho.

Exactly. once you show that your word can not be trusted, no one should ever trust it again.

Guess we got hit by the Iamaleava bug.

I hope it’s a significantly larger sum of cash to offset the major rep hit with making a move like this all things considered.

Sucks. Really loved him as a receiver and returner.
But, next man up. We have other good receivers, but not with his experience.
Have more dollars to spread around too now, and maybe lock up that cornerback everyone is high on or another linebacker or too.

Tough to take but it’s where we are in college sports. Even the best of kids take the money, which it’s hard to blame them. Not many make NFL, and if you can get paid big big money (even more significant money than we were paying per sources), then i certainly understand it.

The other part to this is that we aren’t going to be very good next year. We are young and the schedule is brutal. Pena probably saw writing on wall during spring and realized it may be better for him to take payday and have change to compete for conference title.

Big picture on the field, I’m not sure this changes my view on next year. It would have been tough to get bowl eligibility even with him. Pena doesn’t alone win or lose us games. I like our other receivers. Given that we are going young next year to build for 2026, may not be bad to get a young slot in to work with RC this year and build chemistry for 2026 (assuming we can keep them).

More interesting to me is how Fran responds off the field. It has been the spring of Fran talking. A lot of positive press. Deserved too. However, losing a captain and possibly other significant contributors, with little coming in to replace, puts him in a tough spot to keep selling DART. I wonder how he responds. Will he still be all in on a north east private school school when the reality that we are a small market team subject to getting raided becomes ever clearer. My concern is that he starts to blame school/situation. That’s what Dino did at the end.

Early signs are that Fran is cancelling media availability to end spring and that he was worked up after practice last night … certainly some controversy is finding Fran in year 2.

Also there are written agreements. It’s not like he’s trusting Syracuse’s word. He has a contract with the school/collective. He reneged on it a few months later.

If you were him you’d do the same thing if the price was right. If he’s getting a big paycheck he would be a fool to not leave. He’s no lock to play in the NFL so he should take the money and run
Actually no I wouldn’t. I turned down two jobs this year, one was double what I am making currently. I like where I work and don’t want to move my family. And my post was tongue in cheek, I don’t ever waste an ounce of my energy worrying about what college kids do.

People keep saying he realized just now the team might be bad.
I would be shocked if that is the case.
Someone backed up a dump truck of money and dump it out for him, really the only thing that makes sense to transfer now and not december.

Yeah - am sure Fran was elated to hear the news after he made him team captain.

There's always a right and wrong way to do things and these kids have to grow up fast now. They're making big business decisions but your word still matters.

All I know is that it I had a job offer and accepted it, but then a few months later another job offer came in for more money, I wouldn't feel right ditching my current job. Not after they went through the hiring process and trained me etc.

He ain’t gone yet.
I hope this is true, haven’t seen him announce anything himself yet. It would suck to lose him, but at the same time it would open up more NIL money.

I hope it's not.

Look on the bright side! More NIL $ to offer the proven LB and the CB we have been pursuing.

11 Pages in . Just jumped to this spot because I can't keep up.

Just need to say this again

I FRIGGIN HATE NIL

BURN THE WHOLE THING DOWN

In theory NIL is a good idea
How schools apply and use NIL is an abomination

It stinks when a player is treated so well by the program that developed him breaks his word and leaves late.

But given Trevor’s economic situation and injury history, I understand. This is probably his last chance to make money playing money and the money being offered is too big to turn down.

I wish him the best. Hope that money changes his life forever.

I hope whoever the program is that tampered gets investigated and put on probation. They broke the rules and need to get shut down. The team should lose scholarships and recruiting privileges and the staff should get banned from coaching college football.

Surprised the end of practice scuffle is not getting more run here. Maybe Fran was asking the captains to do more community service and that was the last straw for Trebor.
