UBuffalo Wild Wings Postgame

Absolute love that we can put up 3’s. Seems like we’ve got multiple guys who can knock them down, and they can all be on the floor at the same time, which is nice. The difference from the last four years is huge — we used to either have shooting with zero defense or defense with zero shooting. Now it looks like there’s way more balance and versatility in who can shoot and at what clip.

The offense looks way more flowing. Someone’s always moving, which I love. But we still have little paint pressure interesting to see how that develops. i think this was a reason we don’t have as many “easy looks”. need to be able to back cut more and have different looks.

• Nait George is really good. Don’t care about the turnovers — that’ll clean up with time.

• Would like to see Kingz get more looks.

• I like the intensity of the guards on defense they’re really active.

• Donnie looks uncomfortable when he doesn’t have the ball as much.

Okay, credit to red for playing this game on the road. I think we have some very good pieces. Definitely good enough to be a tournament team. The question for me is Red, There couldn't be a bigger question mark. How would he match up with good coaches. Let alone great coaches. I didn't see anything tonight to suggest he can. But we will see.
The question is was it all about the w for Red tonight or was he sitting back and evaluating different personnel combinations. I thought that is partly what an exhibition game was for. You can't duplicate this in a practice. Even if he found a good combination, he needs to see what happens with that good combination if someone has to come out with foul trouble or an injury. This is an experimental game at best. Is there some general things to take away, sure. But don't be judging the whole season or the coaching ability on what you saw tonight. And yes playing this on the road was a very good idea.

It’s hard to gauge off one exhibition where it was our first game and we were subbing like crazy where there was no continuity with a lineup. But there were a few notable things.

Very sloppy and lots of turnovers on offense. That’s on coaching. Autry has to clean that up

Athleticism was superior to last years team. This team just looks physically and athletically superior to the last few years

JJ was not great. I’m sure he’ll be fine but he’s not our alpha dog. I don’t want that ball in his hands to end the game

George is our best all around player. Offensively, defensively, he’s steady with the ball. Stat sheet stuffed with points, rebounds and assists. He’s really damn good and of he’s in the game, we have a shot. If you want a winning team, that’s the PG you need at the helm.

Betsy was a surprise. He’ll get minutes. He was steady, great shooting, very good on defense too. He’s got the body to be physical too and doesn’t seem like he’s timid to knock around with the big guys unlike Bell

Kingz is what we need. Good compliment to George, JJ and Freeman. Just need Kingz to be steady, knock down some shots. And he wasn’t afraid to mix it up with the bigs either. He was also good on D

Freeman. Was okay. Not good, not bad. He was big down the stretch when he needed to be. Knocked down his free throws. He’ll be a 13-15 ppg and 9 rpg guy for us

Kyle was very physical. Little chaotic at times. Terrible free throw shooter which concerns me. Played well defensively and a very good rebounder. He had a quietly good statistical game which is what I expect from him. 8ppg, 8rpg kinda guy is what we need and protect the rim.

Thought we did well pushing the ball. Damn was it nice to see some fast breaks again, and even a few alley oops on fast breaks like the good ole days.

I think our rotation will end up being
PG: George
SG: Starling
SF: Kingz
PF: Freeman
C: Kyle

Betsy:might be the first off the bench he was impressive
Souare: back up center
Kiyan or Fennell as the first guard off the bench

Unknown about Sadiq yet as he didn’t play.
Bryce will be spot minutes and DNP a lot
Womack should redshirt
Tiefing redshirt or spot minutes

It’s clear though that George needs to play a lot of minutes. Donnie will get a lot of minutes.
We realllllly gotta clean up the turnovers and sloppiness. If we cleaned that up we probably win this game by 20+. Free throw shooting was alright but can be worked on. Rebounding and defense was soooooo much better. We’ll see what Pace brings as our final tune up

Im a Autry hater, but I did like the tenacity. Again it's a exhibition, we tried 10k different line ups, we were gonna have shaky moments.
I was happy that JJ showed some effort on D, which he didnt do at all last year. Donnie again just stands like a light pole on D, he needs to move his feet and use his athleticism to block more shots. Betsey physically reminds me of Jaren Jackson, Kingz meh wasn't really featured enough to make a judgement. Kiyan is a true HOF players son, knows how to find pockets and is always in the right position offensively. WILL Kyle plays alot like Kenneth Faried if he rebounds like that all season that will help alot! Fennell a classic off the bench PG, we'll need his passing and vision but man like alot of Aussies mens and women's hes gonna have to get used to the Athletesism. Zephir wasnt as bad as i thought, reminds me of Cuffe just physically bigger.

Im probably missing more, but I only caught a couple 5 min spirts of the game.

I’m worried about not having enough rim protection. If we only had a Jesse Edwards-or Rakeem Christmas type starting center who brings real rim protection, I’d feel much better about this team and its ceiling. I wish we had spent the money on a higher caliber one. I like Kyle and his energy a whole lot but he feels more like the backup guy than the main center.

Another observation: Kingz will need to be taking more than one 3 point shot in games going forward. I get that he only played 19 minutes and it was just an exhibition game. But Kingz and Betsey will be our best 3 point shooters (along with Kiyan) and Kingz will need to be way more aggressive with his shot in real games. He can be an elite shooter.

Finally, I knew Betsey was gonna be good and predicted that he would be our 6th or 7th man along with Sadiq, but even I was blown away by his stellar shooting and no fear in pulling the trigger.

scrimmages literally do not matter if you are making wide sweeping claims about one please chill out, take a kolonipin, and flal asleep to the soothing sounds of info wars

Looking at the stats, we were the much better team shooting, rebounding, personal fouls, free throws and with assists. There were 2 worrisome stats though - steals and turnovers, both pointing to an issue with ball security. Buffalo had 7 more steals (12 vs 5 ) and 6 less turnovers (17 vs 11). That’s a total of 13 possessions that we just gave away to Buffalo which is bad and made the game this close (we were lucky we excelled in the other areas or it would have been even closer (or worse yet a loss). It resulted in Buffalo even attempting more shots than we did in the game.

We are playing uptempo with a variety of mixed lineups. I imagine it contributes some to the sloppiness we saw but Buffalo also freely substituted throughout the game too. We had the superior athletes but we lost focus especially in that second half. You just can’t allow giving away that many extra possessions to your opponent. We have to value the ball more.

First of all this thread is something else… how can you be underwhelmed if you didn’t watch the game but looked at the box score?

My take:
- high floor team, but I don’t know if they have any high end offensive talent… if they can find some offense this should be a tourney team
- tons of good depth… not much drop off in players 5-10, but that’s also because we don’t have elite talent
- team defense was much improved… I saw some defensive rotations and secondary help for the first time under Autry. Saw very few jail break lay ups compared to last few years
- not sure what the plan is on offense. Saw some 4-out and 5-out sets. Saw a lot of pick and roll potential with George. Saw some kick and drive and some dribble hand offs. What I don’t see is a consistent plan. I really hope the plan isn’t “jack up 3s”
- I hope this is Freeman knocking off the rust

That’s all I got from this one

Donnie is a gifted player. He had 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists in a game where he played pretty poorly. If he was on his game, he easily could have had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

We've got some good players. I was impressed by Kiyan at times. Betsey will play more minutes than expected. Kyle was active - I like what he gives us defensively and on the boards.

I'd like to see a bit more of this lineup (simply based on who played well in game 1)
1: George
2: Kingz
3: Betsey
4. Freeman
5: Kyle

If JJ wasn’t a local guy he would get absolutely destroyed on here. He is nothing more than a third guard on a good P4 team. The McDonald’s AA game was a long time ago and he hasn’t developed. This team will not go far with him as a top option.

When one of our best SU teams once lost an exhibition game at home to D2 Le Moyne (albeit not playing zone), I learned to not put much stock in glorified scrimmages. With that said, George reminds me a lot of Tyler Ennis (same number and from Canada too) and Betsey can fill the Braswell/Southerland role. Kiyan will learn a lot this year while and be ready to take over the team next year. He actually has a little bit of Moten in his game. Donnie needs to talk to John Wallace about how to effectively play inside out. Hopefully Sadiq plays on Wednesday because he could be a difference maker on defense.

It’s always interesting to not pay any attention to the bball side, watch an exhibition, and then read the bball side.

Thoughts:

- PG upgrade is helpful
- Starling can get a bucket when needed, but that shouldn’t be the default mode
- team will go as far as their collective will to defend and rebound.
- Very big overall - that alone should help everything
- Betsy can be very good if his defensive motor burns hot
- Anthony can score but needs to grow as a defender, lack of foot speed means he needs to anticipate better
- like the center - good rebounder and rim runner super helpful to this team

Lots of H0T Takes and panic buttons over an exhibition game that won’t see 90 different lineups in a regular season game. We will be just fine.

As others have said in this thread (and elsewhere), putting any stock in exhibition game results is a a dangerous (and silly) game. These are nothing like 'real' games. They are for trying things and looking for combinations that work (and don't work). Expecting them to be a harbinger for the season is not wise.

Prime example - November 3, 2009.

LeMoyne 82, Syracuse 79

Final SU record? 30-5

That team sucked.

Couldn't beat Pitt or Louisville and flamed out after just 4 NCAA tournament games.

I'd say the game and end result was neither encouraging or discouraging.
It was a practice game so you try things. It was also against what "currently" projects as a pretty bad team.

Thinking more about it, scheduling this exhibition game “on the road” against a D1 team is really smart considering what needs to be done scheduling wise for the NET ranking when games really count. Good practice and preparation for what the team needs to do during the regular season, which is what exhibitions are all about.

I did a rewatch and will break some things down a bit later but anyone that has time it’s worth it. The negatives are far less when you pay a little closer attention and most really are around rust and execution. A lot of things that should improve as guys get more time on the court together.
