UConn Coming (2 and 2)

It makes sense for them

Only Miami, UVA or VTech makes sense for us.

Carolina has been playing Wake 2x in hoop, 1x in football a year for a billion years. Those two playing each other is a nice easy thing to do.

Yes, but...

There’s a distinct chance UConn either isn’t FBS anymore, or even playing football anymore by the time the last of these scheduled games is supposed to occur.

IF either of those things happens, we’re pretty much screwed.

Would be very difficult to find replacement opponents that late in the game.

Sorry to be the Debbie Downer here (on what is otherwise an AMAZING day to be Orange!!), but it is a legitimate risk.

Assuming they’re still around thru ‘27, let’s beat the ever loving snot out of them 4x, and get ourselves 1/6 of the way towards a bowl game each year by doing so.

Just another point of view:

If UConn drops to FCS, we have that slot filled, or we cancel the games. These contracts usually have a buy out clause. Dropping below the threshold for a P-5 team is a part of the deal, meaning that UConn has a duty to stay eligible to play SU. (Conversely, this is true of SU staying eligible to play UConn, but let's be honest, it probably is NOT going to happen.)

I agree that finding a replacement opponent late in the game is difficult, but doable.

Your last comment says it all. Beating UConn back into the stone age should be a fun time for all SU fans.

Good job by Wildhack not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. Games against UConn checks a lot of boxes

people being outraged because SU doesnt dictate terms like psu are dopes
Whoever had 10AM on Saturday in the pool the check is on the way from me.

We are going to help them bigly. They averaged less than 10,000 a game and are hemorrhaging taxpayers' money.

Which is why a 2 for 2 deal was a bad job.
If it was a 3 for 2. It would make sense.
UConn has no conference and needs home games. We gave them an outstanding deal when they have no leverage.
We don’t need them. They need decent home games.

We play in NE every 2 years. This is just a bad negotiation.
People don’t care well when you try to negotiate with other teams how do we get better series when they see what we did with UConn who is at the bottom of the barrel.

We need to win 6 games every year. The ACC Atlantic schedule is frigging brutal.

Any OOC win we can get is a huge help.
Dino is a good coach, making a bowl game lets him coach his players that much more.
Development is KEY.
When did our conference slate get brutal? Clemson (until Dabo leaves), FSU, and a bunch of peer schools.

Serious question - all these posts you're making are about one extra or less game? I know there is residual feelings about UConn that some ( KaiserUEO ) still weirdly hold...

Like sutomcat says, we promise a home gate of 38K or so for some MAC / C-USA type, so not sure what type of hand we have in 2-1 type of games.

two home games with SU in four years isn’t going to fix their problems.

UNC and Wake played in non-conference this past season.

Wake's non-con schedule in 2019 was Utah St, Rice, and Elon. They booked a game with UNC just so they could have ONE P5 non-con game.

UNC's schedule was South Carolina, App State, and Mercer. The Wake game gave them TWO P5 non-cons.

Playing THREE P5 non-cons is just crazy talk. Especially for a program that's been to only 4 bowl games in 15 years.

I wasn't advocating that we should play Coastal teams in non-conference. It would be kind of fun every once in a while. I just wanted to point out that ACC teams have played in non-conference and it happened this past season.

I have no strong opinion about playing UCONN. It's refreshing to see our schedule start to fill up years in advance instead of scrambling to find a team the offseason before.

I should have specified scheduling SU for OOC. Others have already addressed the proximity rivalry issue above when it comes to the Carolina schools. It's a short car/bus ride from Wake to Chapel Hill. They probably get as many Wake fans there as a home game.
If Colgate/Army/Buffalo were ACC Coastal, it would make sense for all due to proximity. Who would we play from the Coastal (who also wants to play us) that makes sense for both sides and is also an easier or equal game than UConn? I don't see any and none of them would draw markedly better in the Dome.
Remember, the potential opponent has a say in this. We can't just tell Duke, "Hey, we have an open date on 9/14/23, so we've put you on our home schedule for that day. "
I give the AD the benefit of the doubt that putting together an OOC schedule may be harder than we posters think.

Generally agree, but we had an urgent need for a road game in 2022. Might have ended up with a one-off add on to the Liberty series or some other program of that level. The timing of this series:
- fills that gap
- likely guarantees 5 straight years with 7 home games
- pushes the second return trip out far enough to balance out the schedule and should UConn drop to FCS this game would likely move to the Dome and fill our FCS slot for that year.

Couple that with a drivable road trip for fans to an area with some great attractions nearby and I can rationalize the agreement into a net positive.

If we needed a 2022 road game then play UConn 1-1.
We can play lower teams 1-1.
Playing them 2-2 is just stupid negotiations.

We RUINED the potential of our best team & QB in a decade (2012) by doing exactly that -
3 OOC P5 games.

That’s GROSS.

Not being argumentative, but what's the difference between a 2 and 2 against UConn and a 1 and 1 against UConn and another 1 and 1 against Akron?

Neither are going to draw a lick extra at the Dome but Dino does like recruiting MI so a game in Ohio is better than a game in Connecticut for recruits.
We play at BC every other year so we play in NE.

Brutal might have been a bit exaggeration on my part, but it certainly ain't forgiving.

Clemson, FSU, Louisville, NC St, BC, Wake, Pitt and a crossover every year is pretty damn tough.

Playing 1 big OOC game, then 3 cupcakes sounds perfect to me.

Syracuse and Connecticut have agreed to play four times between 2022 and 2027, the schools announced today in a joint release. The Orange will host Connecticut in the Carrier Dome on Sept. 6, 2025 and Oct. 3, 2026. Syracuse will travel to East Hartford to face the Huskies on Sept. 10, 2022 and Nov. 6, 2027.
My first question is “why?.”

I’m OK with playing them, but I’m not enthused about a 2-2. Why not a 2H-1A-1N?

What’s UConn realistically going to say to that offer? And, even if they do turn it down, our response should be “cool ... someone call UMass.”

Rather have 2 at the Dome, one at the Rent and one at Yankee Stadium.

Maybe the Nov 6th, 2027 game moves to YS?
Agreed - I’m surprised we didn’t get one of the away games split at YS.

I hope we at least got some WBB games out of this. (I assume we aren’t going to get “free” home MBB games, and I’m not sure what else UConn could give us that we’d want.)
