UNC Gameday...

Weird quote.

That being said soccer grass and football grass are pretty different.
Army was falling all over the place when they played. Field is mowed very short and believe grass has been dead or just starting to grow in from winter (one of our southern poster’s may know better).

The question is how do the Carolina kids manage to stay up right?

It’s a pretty inarticulate quote but I kinda get what he’s saying. Balls don’t bounce true on grass like they do on turf and it’s hard to adjust to if you never play on it. My kid hates playing goalie on grass because of that.

Still, it’s comes off as excuse making. And he could have found grass to practice on this week if it was such a concern.

Also finn had short stick on him he needs to do something with that. Not saying he needs to score but least be a feeder then. Or maby we should have sent finn up top to middie n bear down low. Carolina had a game plan n maby we did but left it on the bus. Whole team was mess n coaches didn’t seem to adjust or make good adjustments.

They are still in good spot but have to take care business next week. Can not come out next week like did today. Feel defense has played super soft last two games. I get trying to avoid the mental breakdowns where flagged left n right. But you have to find some way to play aggressive while also composed n not flagged.

Also notice carolina when slide came n doubled the off ball guys got up tight to any n all close outlets. Why don’t we do that? they made it hard to just catch n pass. They made us uncomfortable n we fell right into it. Another thing said we should be doing. We don’t make it hard enough for teams to score. We playing to soft. Stop just swinging willy nilly for sticks n take the body right on their hips n drive them. While doing that time ur stick checks.

Can’t wait to get up there next week. Hope to the lax creator it’s a much better cuse team that shows up n plays.

I've seen worse
Not even in the top ten should have seen the 2003 final four vs Hopkins or 2004 at Homewood to include Mike Powell getting stuffed on a breakaway and shutout completely. Watch any of the games from 2007 to include Kenny Nimms balling his eyes out on TV. How about Desko’s last game with Curry dropping bombs on national TV there have been way way worse performances

Using the body. He gets to a spot near goal and can use the body to create an open look. Making plays out of picks too. He has done it his whole career here. This is not something exclusive to Spallina either. Then he creates looks just purely as a feeder as well and takes advantage of guys sliding early better than anyone. Strait up sprinting by a teams best longpole is not always a reliable option either. Duffy running by Figueras is not what beat us today.

You have to ignore a zillion plays Spallina has made this year and his whole career to think he can't make things happen 1v1.

When I see him try that against elite teams, he looks like he's hitting a brick wall. It happened today. He shouldered into a defender as hard as he could and the D guy didn't budge.

Someone like a Tehoka Nanticoke can be successful against most anyone in a bully game. Not sure about Joey.

Anyhow, he was lower on my worries list from today. The turnovers, the preparation, the energy, the Swiss cheeseness on D, Bear getting shut down, the settling for too long shots, maybe the goalie, top my concerns.

He doesn’t have the foot speed to create his own shot.

And UNC’s defense hasn’t bothered to slide early to double him and give him a feeding opportunity.

No feeding from Joey, and no ability to beat his defender to his favorite shooting spots made him completely invisible today
How come UNC can free up #77 & we can't free up #22?

Typical Gary.

The pipeline from the locals like West Genny isn’t pumping em out and lax parents want a more prestigious degree than Cuse…
I’m sick of this more prestigious degree BS. Your career is what you make of it. No one gives a shi_ where you went to school. The only thing that matters is what you produce. Thank you.

Out of the country so wasn't able to watch, but it seems like it may have been a good game to miss.

Taking a 1,000 foot view the result is not too surprising or calamitous for the Orange's season. I had three games penciled in as what I thought would be likely losses this year (Harvard, Princeton, and UNC) along with the possibility of losing another ACC game (just wasn't sure which one). It's a shame I'm not a gambling man.

The Orange are still in a great spot for a home game in the opening round and a top 4 (probably still top 3) seed. Of course they'll need to put this behind them and take care of business moving forward.

However, taking a much closer view of the result is where the alarm bells start going off. From all your wonderful commentary, it never seemed like the game was close or that Cuse had a fighting chance (unlike Princeton where it was fairly even after the opening frame if I remember correctly). The same issues we've all been bemoaning all season were on full display. Lack of leadership, sloppy and careless play all over the place, poor shot selection, turnovers, and an inability to adjust to get the offense going against a defense that had a good game plan. Limited urgency and lack of precision. It seems like the team that is just playing around in the backyard and not serious about winning a national championship.

Now, of course, all the issues are fixable. But they are not new issues and could have been fixed already, raising doubts about if this team has what it takes to get it together and put the necessary work in to truly get good enough to win it all. Talent alone is not enough. I felt like some on this board were a little cavalier about UNC's ability to pull it together with Breschi at the helm but as I cautioned then, he has amassed a critical mass of talent so that he might just not be able to screw it up.

The Tarheels have shown serious improvement over the course of the season. Syracuse has not. Same old team. Same old issues. They're running out of runway. There needs to be urgency and senior leadership that gets everyone's butts in gear. The coaches have not shown the ability to change this team for the better. It's up to the players to do it themselves. It's not ideal or fair or whatever you want to call it, but for the seniors especially, they've got to drive this team from here on out.

It's amazed me over the last few seasons but especially this year - for all the talk and buzz of Cuse being a high flying, fast paced team, they really struggle against teams that out pace them. Princeton and UNC played Syracuse's game and took their lunch money doing it.

If you're going to dish that type of firepower out to other teams, you better be prepared to handle it yourself and overcome it. This team hasn't really gotten there.

All that to say, their season is still objectively in more than fine shape. This team can easily be a quarterfinalist and maybe a semifinalist. But . . . they have a lot of work to put in still to make sure they can hoist the trophy.

Couldn't agree more. But, who is going to take responsibility? I would think it would be Spallina, but he is the worst example of a player who goes MIA when the going gets tough.

Tough to say without knowing any of the internal team dynamics. Would ideally be someone (or more than one) who can really rally this team into a more team-first mindset. Someone who can preach maturity and focus and selflessness. These aren't just traits for a team to occasionally have, they're habits that teams must have to be successful.

Didn't include it in my original post, and I may be being dramatic, but Gary's comments about the grass really rubbed me the wrong way. It's a lack of accountability at the highest level that infects the team. It's a bad look for a program that that's the commentary after a loss like this.

I'm a big Gait supporter, but I agree. Somebody should remind him that the grass is the same ln both sides of the field. And, if it was such a huge concern, practice on GRASS!

I was at the game today. Very interesting defensive strategy by UNC. In essence, they designed their defense to prevent the ball from moving through X and pinched the pipes to prevent the doorstep looks that Cuse has a lot of success.

If we dodged the alley, the only option was a throwback. If we swept across the top, the only option was to thrown it forward or reverse it to either high wing.

Needless to say, it was very effective.

Carolina had the better defensive coach.

Where in upstate Ny would you find a grass field that’s not a waterlogged swamp at the moment they only left yesterday. It’s an excuse but it’s cost many Syracuse teams in the past as well

Gait getting clowned on by everyone on social media, and it's hard to argue with any of them. Just a complete embarrassment to this program right now.

Hey least hopkins won lol. Denver lost Bu got smoked n duke lost which hurts. Penn is losing be nice if they can make comeback to win. But least hopkin win gives a boost.

Some of you guys seem to worry way too much every week about what our opponents do. When the regular season ends in a few weeks, Syracuse will have had one of the toughest schedules, high RPI and assuming they win 2 more games probably a lock to have a top 4-6 seed.

Honestly watching a lot of games today i’ve noticed more than few things. Now no idea if it’s weather change being cold to a hot day. But what i noticed in ton of games is simple passes could not be made. So many unforced turnovers in so many games on simple pass exchanges. Two- guys were slipping all over the dam field in so many games nkt just cuse. Another sticks breaking left n right. Must of seen least 10+ broken sticks through-out games today. Still no excuse for cuse lack luster performance. But did seem the change of weather affected few teams today. Mean maryland even struggled on simple passes (yes they haven’t looked themslves ) but i’ve never seen a tillman coach team not able to make simple no pressure passes like did today. Ohio state had same issue also.

Leadership for this team is certainly a problem. English being gone really hurts as he seemed to always be that guy when things arnt going well. Which crazy a guy not a cuse for 4 years but comes over for his last 2 n he is the leader of the team in those times. I don’t know what gait does or doesn’t or even how much can blame it on him. Clearly some things can like no adjustments or little there of. Or just standing on side at times without any emotion or fury towards guys making dumb rookie mistakes.

But as said a lot of the mistakes seem to be from our seniors which is just bad. How can they be leaders when they’re the ones making those horrible choices or mistakes. Someone anyone needs to decide to be the voice n leader n get into guys at times. Did see jake spallina give think kittle some crap after goal on a terrible switch on pick that left dude open for goal. But something has to happen. Sometimes seems like no one wants to be the guy n all waiting for someone else to be that guy.

Either way as said they still control their fate n in good spot. But have to buckle down n fully commit n change n vow to not only play better but be better. Tall task maby. Maby a bad lost is what gets these guys going. Maby they get to big headed n needed to be knock down again to remind them. I don’t know just don’t seem st times our guys want it enough. Watching guys battling for gbs instead of helping. Not hustling to baxk shots up. Still forcing ball toward net as clock winds down n so far away not chance at score instead rolling it into corner. When things go wrong for us man do they go wrong.
