Trying to think of some names for replacements for Arena and it's impossible to know what our budget will be but I have to imagine that will hold us back.

David Wagner would be a nice get depending on how long Huddersfield stays up. Have to think that if they're relegated this year he'd listen. A guy like Roberto Martinez would come in with instant credibility and a system. And then you have a slew of young coaches doing well in the MLS who I think can truly coach. Picking based on system alone, I'd love to see a Jesse Marsch come in with his high press and get after these less talented teams instead of allowing them to control possession against us. The whole setup needs and overhaul, though.

The reality is that in any sport you need players who have a will to win and will take over a game to ensure that they win. In previous years we had Bradley, Dempsey, Donovan at their peak, who would not let us lose games. You knew that they would score goals when it mattered and more often than not they did. This generation of players, while arguably more talented than any other USMNT, is a bunch of role players. There are no game winners other than Pulisic and unfortunately he couldn't overcome the lack of a single other game winner. This was fairly obvious from the beginning of this cycle and we had two coaches make the mistake of trying to recycle the same old players from previous cycles and not try out new talent until it was too late. I would say outside of Pulisic, no other player who was on the roster should wear a USMNT for the next 3 years... Bradley, Dempsey, Gonzales, Zusi, Villafana, should never wear the jersey again unless its a send off game.

I've been a fan of us soccer since 1990... I remember watching the US vs Italy in Italia 1990 at 3 in the morning while visiting my family in India as a 14 year old, being in tears when Tab Ramos when Tab Ramos got knocked out of the game by an elbow against Brazil, being gut punched when the ref didn't call a hand ball against Germany, etc... I can honestly say for the first time ever I could care less about this version of the team because it was so obvious that they were terrible from top to bottom... from coach to ball boys. The only exception was watching Pulisic emerge into a top talent. Now I look to the future and the next generation with renewed hope. The next move needs to be for Gulati to retire and then hire a coach with innovative new ideas and then get the next generation in.

Toronto is the best MLS team. They wouldn’t win the Championship division in England.

It’s not a world class league.
Pirlo, Villa, Lampard, Gerrard, Cole use the MLS as a retirement league.

The sport plays off the world calendar. No MLS squad can win the CONCACAF champions league.

Our players coming back to the MLS over playing in Europe hires US soccer.

Obviously it's not the Bundesliga. But people like you cry about the quality of the league and completely dismiss it, yet that's where 90% of our players develop there.

You will moan about the development of our teams, but I guarantee you don't turn on the games. You don't support the domestic league. You only know big names (half of whom ride the pine). If you want the US to succeed go watch Tyler Adams or James Sands play next year. Invest in the domestic product because without the MLS our team in the last ten years is Christian Pulisic and dual citizen Germans.

You spout the same tired BS that most snobby soccer fans do. Pirlo rarely plays, Villa played for Spain last break, Lampard was fantastic his last year in NYC (after starting about a dozen games for Man City). You'd know that if you watched.

I can almost guarantee you made that TFC statement without knowing much about the team beyond their big 3, but you'll bash the league anyway.

It's a tired argument and youre making it with an uninformed point of view.

By the way, the teams that just kept us out of the World Cup? Lots of MLS players on their rosters -- why didn't they fail terribly?

There is not a lack of good young Americans but we need to have a coach with a system and the patience to go through some growing pains. Losing John Brooks really hurt us during the hex and he should lock down half of the CB position going forward. Excited about Cameron Carter-Vickers or Matt Miazga's potential to be the one to pair with him. Weston McKennie has been mentioned but he could be another Jermaine Jones-type player (who we actually get in his true prime) to dominate as a CDM. Also really want to see more of Danny Williams in a US uniform. There are a few decent attacking midfield options like Emerson Hyndman, Lynden Gooch, and Josh Sargent. I'm worried about the future of the GK position and left back, but hopefully Fabian Johnson doesn't quit the team like he's hinted at.

Yeah, because there are so many great national teams out there who don't have a domestic league.

Go watch Manchester United and hope that somehow giving them your money will make the US better.

The league isn’t good. It’s not the Dutch league or Portuguese league.

Hedges dropped off this year after being fantastic last year (I called for him a lot earlier in the Hex). Martinez is about to have the best scoring clip in MLS history. Elmiron is going to shatter the MLS transfer record and may be one of the 15-20 largest transfers in the world this winter (Aresnal and Inter have already offered in the 25 mill range).

I get about wanting players to move on to bigger and better leagues, I want that too, but let's face it we will never take the next step without a strong domestic league to develop players to make it to the next level. We're not sending 100 kids a year to elite academies in Europe right out of high school. That's never going to happen. Our only chance is to develop a large player pool and hopefully put 3-8 players a year in a top-5 league to build real depth. That's only going to happen with a stronger MLS with the money to run decent academies. But 'fans' of the game and US would rather shipt on the league than go out to a game and realize that most stadiums offer a better atmosphere than most major US sports.

It just gets to me that people constantly shipt all over the league and pretend they know all of its issues but it's obvious they don't follow it, the same tired arguments and TV numbers prove it...
