Vermont Gameday...

1-0 to start the season.

A good win.
Stuff to work on.
Clearing looked ugly at times, not sure why we sub before cleaning. Subbing should be secondary to clearing as there is a time factor.
We have a goalie
Hiltz is back.
Spallina draws attention and will be good once he settles down.
Offense riding is good, causes problems and turnovers.

Happy with the W. In will let the board experts (not a slam, statement of fact and respect) do the deeper dive into the issues. Looking forward to the reviews.

Gotta wonde if March is the answer at OC, another abysmal performance and his personnel decisions are baffling
Was wondering the same thing throughout the game. Is Gait or March the OC? Because it looks like it's going to be another year left wondering WTH this team is doing offensively? Just awful...

Midfield has to be reworked, to many former attackmen playing up top. Swap Simmons and Thomson so both are back at their natural positions. Run Simmons, Rhoa and Birtwistle with Cordes rotating in as a pure shooter. Leo runs second line and gets an occasional attack run, you can tell he feels out of place at Midfield. Kirst and Cook look lost on the 2nd midline

Why can’t we get a good faceoff guy

Sowers seemed to have hidden a lot of March’s flaws. Again it feels like we lack that guy who can take his man on on one. Spallina looking like Jordan Evans 2.0

Looks like this team gonna be very ball movement oriented as don’t see anyone who can just blow past their guy like curry or tucker could. They did have some good looks just goalie made hell saves or they missed. Mark is def gonna help us a lot and defense looked solid for most part. Gbs def work on that and clearing. Thompson is gonna be fantastic and has nice shot. But also don’t see many that our shooters like trimboli. No middie tried to go down alley n shot on run kinda leaving us one dimensional just working it from x. Grant we are very very young so knew take time for gelling but thought O would score more(vermont goalie made sure that didn’t happen more). Overall tho it’s a win and things to like bout this team but of course always work to be done.

two games get o better at scoring at will before maryland. As with maryland fogo don’t see us winning ball much so def will need to score whenever we have it to least chance or keep it close.

Please stop. He looked far better than Evans. He was pressing. He will learn. Needs to look to feed a bit more

spallina will be fine as said he’s too good to smart to not get it. Sure gait or his dad will tell him don’t need to try to hard be the guy by self like high school won’t work in this level and let game come to him. Prob just super excited being first game and all hype let it get to him it happens. But he will find his way no where near jordan evens. If spallina just like a refphus was assisting it more then goals be totally fine with that.

- Ahhh just got back. A win is a win is a win is a win folks. Just a passing glance here says there are some justified concerns about the O. Some initial rapidly typed thoughts.

Yes there certainly should be some concern, but I saw enough where I am convinced things can gel with time. UVM had way more instances of the offense petering out into stale nothingness than ours. I thought the vast majority of our errors on O were due to a lack of finishing (mainly from Spallina but others as well), sloppy play and careless turnovers, and forced over eager shots when a better look could be found later (again mostly Spallina), all things that are not out of place with such a green in the gils crew playing together for the first time. If I had one concern, it is that we need to find the guys most likely to give a ssdm some fits. Kirst a little disappointing off the dodge, Leo Rhoa and Kempney some flashes but the youth shows. Can they give us some answers there down the stretch is a big question mark. Need that guy who will demand a slide with his intimidating dodge to reveal himself.

-As far as Spallina goes, he did not have a good game, but he also did not look bad in the area I was most concerned about, his ability to get to his spots against a D1 defender. The looks he was generating for himself were solid. A lot of his shots I do not blame him for taking. He was often open with enough of an angle at the goal. I think he will both be finding the cage more and defenses will feel the need to slide to him more as he gets settled in. Those slides will lead to more of the passing we know he can do so well. He will face better close D, but its not like he was doing his take the body routing and getting ragdolled before getting anywhere close to the goal. THAT would be a long term concern. Already seeing some hilarious doom and gloom after GAME 1 lol.

Ive had a bev or two and lots more to be said but hey... how bout Richiusa putting up a solid fight against Tommy Burke? How bout that D for the majority of the game? How bout Will Mark?? How bout Thomson??? It aint all bad folks.

The conundrum is having your 6 or 7 best offensive players all being attackman. He’s needs them on the field.

I know almost nothing about lax strategy….but if Gait says this offense will succeed on passing…and Thompson is our best passer...
Yes! Should have let him cook against a short stick way more today.

Tommy Burke against Phaup and Varello in 2021 - 71%
Tommy Burke againt Big Bad Johnny Richiusa - 56%

We should all be crying tears of joy over this! He came in and did a damn good job! That is huge!
Also like The little time Dwan was in.. he may take over for Kol in the near future
