Vince Kehres new DC

Kehres has "soon to be a HC" written all over his resume.

Looks like a home run hire even if he is only here a year or 2.

That is why I think getting his understudy, Ross Watson, is super important if his system is successful here, and if he does leave for a HC job, then we want to continue what we have going; having his replacement on the staff would be amazing.

This is something we've kind of done before. It's good succession planning.

One of my first thoughts was that this is a perfect fit for Fran and Kehres both. Kehres has successful head coaching experience at a lower level and a great DC resume, and if one were to evaluate him for a P4 head coaching job they'd say the one big hole is whether he can recruit - especially in the new environment. Who better to learn from than Fran?

Meanwhile, and I say this as someone who is still thrilled with Fran, the weakness in his skillset matches with what I would imagine Kehres strengths are - the scheme side of things and the organizational HC stuff. The organizational stuff is very well taught in the Mount Union coaching tree. The day to day program, getting 1% better every day, setting expectations, maintaining focus on the task at hand while steering towards the ultimate goal.

I think Fran does some of it well, but I am guessing he will learn some key stuff from Kehres and vice versa.

Vince Kehres runs an aggressive, hybrid 4-2-5 defense, often described as a "Quarters-dominant" scheme that uses inverted safeties and hybrid linebackers (like a "WILL") to create leverage, confuse offenses, and effectively stop the run while also playing sound pass coverage, often employing man-under with bracket principles for the slot receivers. It's known for its unique use of safeties as force players and its ability to consume the box to neutralize RPOs.

I'll take that style of defense over the nonsense we had to endure the last two years.
Haha! That's all over my head, but if any of that translates to no more 10 yard cushions on 3 and 5, I'm in!

Looks as though Watson is taking his talents to Ames, Iowa. Bummer.

I wouldn't expect to see much 3-3-5 in Cuse. Seems like this guy is a tactician who will know how to get the most out of what he's got, and a 3-3-5 is generally used to cover up DL deficiencies for schools who can't match their opponents' recruiting in the trenches.

It'll be in his arsenal if needed, but I expect to see a 4 down lineman front the vast majority of the time. I also wouldn't differentiate between a 4-3 and a 4-2-5. Back in the good ol' days we used to just call that the nickel package, and since teams trot out more WRs in this era it ends up getting used more than the 4-3 base. So opponents' personnel usage will probably dictate which of those we see more of.

Interesting. Thought he’d follow to SU and we’d match the financials. Maybe Iowa through crazy money.
Wondering if Kehres will still attempt to pull from the Mount Union coaching tree to fill the DB role at Syracuse. Alex Grinch comes to mind (DC/S at UCF).

Bummer on losing Watson, ok next up. Does Nick Williams take over dline? Any other coaches Vince would bring in?

Had to be money for Watson. He not only coached with Vince, but also Larry Kehres as well, so he goes way back with them.

Maybe title as well. I think Kehres is the DC we have no COs. So that might not have been on the table.

The truth is this is exactly the hire Fran needed when he first took the job. A first time HC should never have a first time DC no matter how close of friends they are.
JW should have made sure of that but he prob got caught up in the Fran Brown sales pitch so I guess I can’t blame him for that.

I'm really hoping we get a good corner backs and safeties coach. Not on any planet do I think the head coach should also be a position coach.

Yeah - regardless of what it’s called or how it’s even run;

This D is proven to work, very well, over a sample of multiple years.

Whatever the FFF we’ve been doing the past 2 years was proven to suck donkey balls.

Now, granted this year the O did the D less than zero favors,
which is why we often got blown out in 2nd halves, when they just got worn down from constantly being on the field.

But we had an absolutely prolific O the prior year, and the D still sucked royal.

This is one of those situations where we literally couldn’t do any worse than we’ve been doing, so clearly it can’t help but be much better.

A mediocre D would be light years better than these past 2 seasons.
Wasn’t Mediocre D your high school nickname?
