Vince Kehres: New DC

He didn’t turn down the HC job at Toledo. They said they would interview him as part of a national search - this according to the Toledo beat writer. Doesn’t make his accomplishments any less impressive

This. They were gonna interview him, but he would have been of a handful of interviews. Toledo did pretty well with their hire. The fans are pretty excited about Jacobs and I, along with most others here, are very excited about Kehres.

If Vince Kehres is who I think he is, we might look back at 2024 and think if we had him that season would have us in the playoff and competitive. The offense was so elite.
I think it will be again in '26. We have some great pieces, and I'm sure Fran will be acquiring more before the season begins.

Vince is no fool. He turned down Toledo because he sees the bigger prize. Stick around, win with Fran Brown, and he’s the obvious next man up when Fran inevitably gets poached. He didn’t pass on a MAC job, he bet on becoming an ACC head coach. That’s not luck that’s strategy.
If Fran does leave, I'm still convienced he won't, this would be best case for us. Mt Union coaching tree is the real deal.

I just love this comment. If Vince is as talented as we think he is, and the defense quickly improves, I could see him as the succession plan if/when Fran gets poached. I’m really curious to see how Vince fills out the defensive staff and which players from the portal we take from Toledo

I think we need to be cautious about how good Toledo's defense was in 2025 as the schools they played were not good offensive teams. That said, allowing 12 points per game was 10 points below where the opponents averaged last year.

Here are the scoring rankings of the schools they played:

Western Kentucky 48
Morgan St. (76 in FCS)
Miami (OH) 86
Western Michigan 87
Central Michigan 95
Kentucky 101
Akron 107
Washington St. 110
Kent St. 115
Bowling Green 117
Northern Illinois 129
Ball St. 132

Compare with Syracuse's schedule:

Notre Dame 3
Tennessee 6
UConn 12
Pitt 16
Duke 19
Georgia Tech 23
SMU 25
Miami 29
Colgate (#44 FCS)
Clemson 59
BC 83
North Carolina 121

He's not going to work miracles, but if he can just get us to play a more sound defense (tackling, setting edges, creative blitzes), and we can get the offense back moving with a healthy Angeli and better backup, then we'll be fine.

In 2019, the year before he arrived they were #123 in defense. Since then they've been 36, 36, 18, 27, 54, 2. The highest average yards allowed is 362.

He's a proven upgrade.

I get it, but what level of talent was he working with?
