Was that a competent offense?

i just cant take ANYTHING away from this game- im sorry but i cant find anything to get giddy about other than dungy looking like a 3rd year kid physically and playing like he started a game or 2 last year- as for the backs being Heisman candidates -i just dont see it- the detroit kid can turn on a dime and fredricks has some nice balance and vision- but that was against a real poor team

He does that in practice against our 1st team D. Which will be at least ranked in the 50's nationally (I'd bet that they end up in the 35-40 range, honestly).

Who said they were Heisman candidates? I saw "cautiously bullish" and "I'm excited about the future." Those are about as optimistically tempered as you can be. You obviously aren't reading the posts, because not one person is saying that these guys are the best ever, and after one game we are national championship contenders. You're taking pretty innocuous posts that might just hint at being positive, and trying to blow them out of proportion.

I think we're all in agreement that RI is a bad team, and that you can't take much from that. With that said, for the most part the team looked competent last night. How that translates into next weeks game is anyone's guess. But for one night they played well. Why can't we talk about that?

im not hammering any dam agenda - im just not giddy about what i saw last night as you guys-

havent said one bad thing about dungy- not one - said he looks like a 3rd year kid physically and played solid -

i just refuse to buy into the new backs being world busters - ri defense was pretty bad and we only put up 3 tds on offense

What are you talking about? If this team goes 3-9 this year, I'm right there with you my man. A change needs to happen. I will criticize the team and the staff when they do poorly, as I did frequently last year. It's a new year though, so I try to be optimistic about it. They won last night, some of the young players played well. Yep, it was against a really bad team. I know that. I can still enjoy the win though, can't I? Can't all of us? Or should we all be pissed still?

Does it make you feel good to be able to say "I'm not getting fooled again!" Did you used to be excited and happy to watch SU Football, or have you always been miserable?

I started watching SU football in '04. So I can honestly say I've been miserable for a good 75% of the time. If that help makes you understand my position.

So no hope then?

What would have made you giddy?

I'm giddy because he had freshman 18 year olds out there beating up on a veteran team of 20-22 year olds. Rams only started one freshman on d.

Lets beat wake 49-0 and then i'll start believing. But if we grind out a 10-6 win, sigh

I know what your saying, but I would take a ugly 10-6 win. I have some concerns about this team and it starts with the offensive line. I'll take every win I can right now because we need the experience and confidence but if this offensive unit doesn't improve quickly I'm not sure there will be too many more this year. One week at a time, let go orange!

2nd half was very very vanilla, they also wanted to get dungey started slow. It's as if you were expecting Lester to come out looking like Baylor last night. Again, just relax. The freshman looked promising, broyld and irv were fun. Way way too early for people to start commenting on Lester's scheme. I will say there were very few penalties.

in the post game they talked about how little of the offense they even ran just to keep it simple and many of the plays hunt was ready for Dungey was not. after the lead they ran even less of the offense.. still if the Qb with more first team reps throws a bit better, there were at least 3 throwing tds on the table last night he missed. a couple missed reads and a several throws.

against who???????

easy to look like you know what your doing against a team with less talent than a syracuse area high school team-

anyone who takes anything good away from this game is goig to be very very very disappointed by the end of sept
You know even the dog in your picture looks depressed

Bar may be too low on this (cue Chris Rock "you're supposed to!), but for a new offense with so many freshman playing I thought it was good that there were so few false starts, illegal formations, delay of games or timeouts burned.

Delay of game on the first play, one non-clock saving timeout burned. That's all I remember.

Did anyone on the offense other than George Morris have a penalty?

I hope that's a sign of an organized OC who relates to his players. Because we're 1-0 and I can still have hope.

Wasn't there s pass inference call on SU also?
Can't remember who was involved.

I don't know where we'll be by the end of sept, but I would agree with the notion that a game like this tells you about as much as the spring game -- which to say absolutely nothing. Having sad that, it's nice to have a comfortable win. We don't get many of those.

I don't think we saw too much for obvious reasons, but I liked the tempo and how the XB's were used. If positioned/motioned correctly, they can create huge mismatches against LB's. We saw quite a bit of that. I want to see Dungey throw some more, that's for sure. Our running game was obviously a clock management tool in the 2nd half.

Cautiously bullish. That's where I stand.

I think they need to move Lewis back to WR, have Womack working at QB, and leave the the XB to Phillips and Strickland.

Agree. It will become too obvious if Lewis is XB that it's a blocking role that play. If he does run there's time to adjust.

Womack needs to move back today.

I agree on Lewis and Womack we need Depth at QB with AJ out

It sure does...but I bet it wags it's tail once in a while. Maybe his owner should try the same.

No good came from this game?

1) The next guy stepped up. Yes, he needs more experience and needs to face stiffer competition, but he stepped up and has a confidence boost.
2) The defense is not a major drop-off. Losing 8 starters hurts, but Shafer has a history of strong defenses (don't believe it, check out last season's D rankings and recall that the O had fallen apart due to injuries and a less than adequate OC). By season's end, this D could easily match or exceed last season's.
3) The freshmen proved they have heart. They all attacked! No mindset of "here we go again" (as opposed to several posters on this site).
4) The team expects to try to win. They believe in the system and will work within it.
5) The OC sent in plays and the team executed them timely.
6) The special teams looked good, room for improvement but fully functional.

I agree that more proof is needed before I will consider Syracuse having completed the turn around from basement status. I want to see:
A) Dungey versus a more prolific defense
B) Our receivers against faster D backfields
C) The young RBs against stiffer D Lines

Your quote is more definitive than most poster's optimism. Per your quote, we will fail, not by season's end, but by September's end and do so miserably, so much so as to be disappointed with the team in a mere few weeks. I see reason to believe we are still on the right path, maybe not moving as fast as some of us would like, but still moving in the right direction.

Can we ban this dude now? Cannot imagine what you would've said if RI put any points up.

Why do you post here? You are like a troll that belongs on syracuse.com. Have some faith. We lost our 5th year senior QB early in the game and still friggin won 47-0 and you are complaining?

Oh, and what the did you expect to see out of the offense last night? The staff knew they could've won if it was 9 versus 11 so of course they aren't going to show too much. Keeps WF from knowing all of their plays.

Don't be afraid to smile every now and then.

I agree. They also have Perkins at XB. Womack needs to start getting more QB reps in practice. And for those who said that Lewis had enough speed for a jet sweep was proven quite wrong last night. I never understood why they EVER run that play with him. Keep him running routes because he is a good receiver and blocker.

I mentioned this in the chatroom. It was a shaky start but 3 penalties all game? And one of them a crap PI on Whigham. Either way, that has to be close to the lowest game total we've had in the Shafer era. They looked more organized and comfortable on offense than I've seen them look since 2012. The kids know and trust the scheme at the very least. For once we can believe the sound bites coming out of Fall camp. Hope this continues.

Yeah, I didn't get that PI call. And it had two flags. It's as if neither ref watched where the ball landed. That WR would have needed ice skates to get close to that ball.

Actually, I think 2012 team still had the false start and PF bug. Being organized and comfortable has got to reduce the false starts. You are right the PI was BS. So far, so good.
