Was that a competent offense?

The staff knew they could've won if it was 9 versus 11 so of course they aren't going to show too much. .
I think another major factor with the play calling was that with a true-Fr QB unexpectedly thrust into a starting role, Lester didn't want to ask Dungey to try to do too much. Let him settle-in and kept it simple for the most part. As the game unfolded, there was no need to do more.

I'm reminded of the old football adage about teams improving the most between weeks 1 and 2. I wonder if we'll see this in Dungey as well (especially since his preparation for Wake will have a greater sense of urgency)?

So no hope then?
There's hope. It's just that we shouldn't use Rhode Island to gauge anything out of the players. It should be Wake and CMU.

Also some posters on here reminded me that we did do fantastic on penalty's. 1 false start and that happened very early in the game. You can't ask for anything better. And stuff like that should actually translate to playing better competition.

We really haven't seen the offense yet. I expect to see more option plays and more sideline to sideline passing. So far, we have seen more double wing formations than we have seen here in decades. Now, I suspect we will see lots of shifts and motion to go with it.
Should be interesting.

no real downfield threat emerged . granted it wasn't just hunt locked in on broyld for a 10 yd dropsie but our wr's need to make some plays.

sniff...

Which one(s) of my "favorites" is posting?

Hey bcubs, have you spoken to Steven yet? If so, what did you have to say about his first college game experience? He looked good out there. I was telling my wife that he was an 18 year old freshman, and she said "that guy? He's only 18? He's HUUUUGGGEEEE!" lol.

Not sure I agree. We had several opportunities but Dungey overthrew them.
Briskly and Womack both have the speed. Womack also has great hands. Stay tuned.

I don't know where we'll be by the end of sept, but I would agree with the notion that a game like this tells you about as much as the spring game -- which to say absolutely nothing. Having sad that, it's nice to have a comfortable win. We don't get many of those.
i agree--but what it did show me was ol issues with protection and opening holes in the middle, dorpped td pass and dropped interceptions---none of which bodes well. i did watch wf and the qb is excellent!!!!! cant say much else was very good about them ol or dl

What would have made you giddy?

I'm giddy because he had freshman 18 year olds out there beating up on a veteran team of 20-22 year olds. Rams only started one freshman on d.
dungey and strickland make it giddy for me, but the ol took it away

I though the OL played pretty well. Yeah, there were times of penetration through the middle, but they created huge holes according to the running backs.

Haven't been able to reach him except for a few msgs. Think he's busy doing homework (17 hours this semester), meetings, and game film.

"Homework"...yeah...that's it

Lol :)

17 hours?!!

It sure does...but I bet it wags it's tail once in a while. Maybe his owner should try the same.
Feel sorry for the poor beast, especially dogs as they pick up on their owners mood. This poor creature must pee with its tail between its legs.

i just cant take ANYTHING away from this game- im sorry but i cant find anything to get giddy about other than dungy looking like a 3rd year kid physically and playing like he started a game or 2 last year-

as for the backs being Heisman candidates -i just dont see it- the detroit kid can turn on a dime and fredricks has some nice balance and vision- but that was against a real poor team

Yes, because we all know that a player's balance, quickness and vision can change with what team we are playing that week.

Did you watch the Clemson - Wofford game? Wofford was able to get into Clemson's backfield some. Didn't really do any good, though.

BC beat Maine by 21, I would be more worried about them than us.

Pitt is giving up 37 to Youngstown State.

See there is hope rosconey...

I think they need to move Lewis back to WR, have Womack working at QB, and leave the the XB to Phillips and Strickland.
Completely agree

Lewis is not a runner at all, never will be. No more carries. If they want him to be an old fashioned slot receiver , fine

Yeah, I didn't get that PI call. And it had two flags. It's as if neither ref watched where the ball landed. That WR would have needed ice skates to get close to that ball.
the second flag was moral support. "I guess I better throw it too"

Realistic? Comparing an FCS team full of scholarship athletes to a Syracuse area high school that MIGHT produce 2 or at most 3 scholarship athletes? That's not realistic, that is being hysterically negative to the point that your analysis is totally useless. I hate to be that blunt, but it's the truth and I hate watching people be so arrogantly wrong.

its not negative-ITS CALLED REALISTIC -

the offense was playing against a turrable d - dungy didnt give the game away and looked ok- but it was against a d that was just plain awful

The second guy did look like he was waiting to see if the first guy did. And when he figured he better or he'd get in trouble.

I logged all of our offensive plays. Our offense was unflavored ice milk. Off-tackle, up the middle, short pass route. Little zone read, a few jet sweeps. Estime or Phillips had a deep route where he was being covered by a MLB. The execution looked sound and the players looked organized. No, we can't glean much from this game. But we executed what we ran and everything looked organized and controlled. What else can you ask for?

Agreed, competent despite unexpected change early, pretty solid improvement vs last year.

Only thing I'd want is better targeting of receivers in the passing game, but it's hard to see if they were open downfield on ESPN3, etc

When the did go downfield a bit it looked more competent than last year so that's better.

On the pass that Dungey threw at Erv's back there was a receiver wide open in the back of the end zone. Eric will see that by years end.
