Was told to sit down again - really?

Funny Mountain...what does "typical townie attitude" mean exactly? "Townies" show up to games and cheer, Townie72 does not yet he knows about the atmosphere, the boorish behavior, etc...

I would be willing to bet that 20K+ of the 26K that actually showed for the game on Saturday were "townies".

Or are you saying that "townies" are the only ones capable of boorish behavior? I assure you that is not the case, people with an "I'm better than you" attitude that look down on others are far worse.

AZOrange - I bring my young kids to the dome all the time, never had a problem. I think going to the dome is a great experience for children, just keep your kids away from the folks yelling for people to sit.
Actually I was just pointing out that the majority of our casual local fan base are not good football fans.

I'm in agreement with you on this thread. Stand up, be loud, be proud, be Orange. Just be respectful too.

I also agree that bringing kids to a Dome game is not an issue. I think the aggressive attitude of "standers" has been a bit blown out of proportion in this thread.

Didn't the head coach of Syracuse University football Scott Safer ask for the crowd to be loud and active? It's the only thing I can do to help the team so instead of sitting at home and being angry they were 0-2 I showed up at the Dome and yelled and cheered this team on, especially when we were on defense.

I agree with you that the local fanbase is lacking. I try to do my part to bring others that will enjoy the games.

Apologies if I wrongly interpreted your post.

There is obvious etiquette that is involved to going to a game! Everyone that has bought a ticket to a game has the right to do what they want but that doesn't mean it is the right thing to do.

I was not there but in terms of what chakka was referring to I believe the person complaining seems to be the one lacking the etiquette. If chakka was standing most of the time and the section around him/her mostly sits than you may need to reevaluate your etiquette.

It seems to me there should be section designated to sitters and stander and the in between. At least you can request one of them as a season ticket holder. Also once you get your section you will know what to expect with your section.

No worries. Looking forward to next week.

As I was taught when I was 8, I will stand and cheer at appropriate times during the game. I enjoy the game of football immensely and will most likely be this way for as long as I'm able to. My attitude at games has been both infectious to those around me and the source of ire from others. Such is life.

This thread reminds me of one situation though. I'm court side in the baseline seats at a bball game with 3 friends. These seats are expensive to maintain. So a guy who has gotten the seats from a regular directly behind us brings a date, they're both probably mid 30's. we cheer loud, we enjoy the occasion, we're not rude, just passionate. Midway through the 1st half this guy taps me and says could you guys please be quiet and sit, I'm trying to talk to my date and watch the game. I was dumbfounded. You're COURTSIDE. I can understand wanting to see, but to be quiet as well. We embarrassed him in front of his date. If you want to talk the whole game, go watch it at a restaurant.

I understand standing for important plays/results...if you are standing the whole game and the person behind you asks nicely if you could occasionally sit so their child can see the game occasionally, you would still reply that way? Or what if someone who cant stand the whole game...who has a medical problem, like an injured back, but doesnt qualify for the disabled seating, you will still respond that way?

No sir. I would offer to switch seats. I think the key to this whole thing is A) asking nicely and B) me being aware of my surroundings which 98% of the time I am.

Overall, I think we are making a situation with multiple simple solutions much more complex then it has to be. As with other areas of life, what can I do to improve my situation without causing detriment to those around me and likewise what can I do to make sure I'm considerate of those around me. If you keep those 2 things in mind you don't run into many issues like this unless those around you are being inconsiderate tools.

My 2 cents. I stand when the moment calls for it. I don't stand the entire game. And I don't stand if the person behind me is old, infirmed, excessively short (like a child or otherwise), or has made it clear that they are a dick.

Which they usually don't do because I maybe stand 5% of the time.

And I always try to get an aisle seat so I can slide into the stairway if necessary.

My rule of thumb. If I am the only person around me standing, I need to sit my ass down. But if the majority in my section are up, and I haven't been standing much, then the person behind me is probably being out of line.

i remember a usher telling me to sit a few years back-the guy in front of me was standing so i was so i could see-
its a hostile environment for the crazed fan and might be a reason that many dont want to go

Thats it! I'm going to buy tickets at Cameron indoor court behind the students and tell them to sit down because they are degrading the game day experience! Obviously they are all a bunch of hooligans that have poor upbringings ...

Some people just make me shake my head ... and if anyone asks me why I think our fan base is a joke this thread would easily be exhibit A. Its a football game with tackling and high speed collisions .. you want to sit or stand and do nothing go watch golf or tennis ... good lord the logic of some people just baffles me.

I just don't get it - I was considerate mostly but on 3rd down defense & after offensive TDs I would stand up and cheer. People started yelling at me after about our third TD to sit down. Looks like ill have to move again.

I wish the people in charge of the video screens - who I believe is IMG sports, not SU athletics that run it, would re-educate our fans on when to cheer, stand and get loud. After years of terrible football, seems like our fans need lessons on how to be good football fans.

Go Orange!

I'd accidentally spill some beer on them. Not your beer either. ;)

This is where I'm at. I understand that for some people this is their one thing and they go all out for it to make sure they have a good time. Between HS football, college football and soccer I go to 3-4 games every weekend. I don't go to stand for 3 hours. I buy a seat ( I in fact bring a stadium seat to make sure my a$$ is comfortable). I avoid the student sections because...they stand the whole game. If I do sit in the student section, I stand the whole game, I don't ask anyone else to sit. Standing at a sporting event is vastly over rated. Like you "I stand when the moment calls for it." I enjoy analyzing the game, watching the whole field and drinking a beer and eating a dog. I've never spilled a beer while sitting, I've never got mustard or cheese sauce on the guy next to me while sitting. But when a play deserves a high 5, I'm up. I'm even up for big 3rd or 4th down plays. I'm not up for 3rd and 5 from my own 25 in the 1st quarter.
And for the guy who said you'd get run out of the stadium in the big 10 or SEC if you asked someone to sit I doubt they've been to a game there. I've been to games in Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, Jacksonville, Columbus, West Lafayette, Boulder, Seattle, Tempe, State College and the Coliseum (USC). The student sections stand. The rest of the people sit except when the play calls for it. Late in games, yeah alot of people stand. If peopel in front of me start standing and its not jsut them, but the peopel in front of them etc. then I stand. If someone behind me complains I just turn and with a regretful look point to the people in front of me.

And lastly:

GET OFF MY LAWN!

I'm thinking maybe the university could step in and solve this one next year every other section is sitters and standers using some type of discriptive questionare in the season ticket app then all us crazys are together and don't care when another guy is standing cause we are too and the sitters have no problems either.

I would also suggest making friends with everyone around you at the beginning of the game it will decrease this problem significantly I stood on several occasions during the game and those behind me who were 40 yrs my senior never said a word and were more enthusiastic as the game went on and we talked about good plays and bad calls.

There's a difference between standing up for big plays, and just standing for the whole game. No objections to the former. Some people get annoyed as hell by the latter.

This whole thread is incredibly funny, because at the big football schools here in the South, you just stand...all game long. The old people, the kids, the students, the 30 somethings, everyone stands. Was at the UF-FSU game a couple of years ago, and stood the entire time because everyone else did. It's just what they do.

We don't look at it the same way in the north, but this entire thread would never be a debate at many schools. They'd actually look at us like we were insane.

Yep ... I live 30 mins from Athens, GA ... totally different world.

Sorry to bump this month old thread, but I kind of laughed it off thinking it was more of an exaggeration until I had it happen to me this past weekend in the Dome also. I haven't been able to make it up to a game in the dome in a couple of years due to my schedule, so I've mostly hit up away games and bowl games. I like most on here sit for most of game and typically only stand for touchdown/big play, 3rd down situation, and/or people in front of me are standing requiring me to stand to see. I would have no problem standing whole game, but I understand others don't and try to respect that.

So anyways for the Clemson game we were sitting lower level prob 15-18 rows up somewhat near the endzone/corner so would typically require a little more standing from our section than normal when the ball was on the other side of the field. I was with my father and brother and we were cheering like everybody else but not standing more than normal just reacting with the rest of the crowd. So early in the game during one of the 3rd downs (I believe it was one early where we called the TO on defense) a guy behind me tapped me on shoulder and was like can't you guys sit down (directed towards me and my brother). He was respectful but I was kind of blown away because everybody else was standing below me and the crowd was rocking pretty good. I turned around trying not to be a d#ck and was like "are you kidding me? It's 3rd down and long...get up and support your team." Keep in mind this was a guy who was prob late 40's at oldest and appeared to be in decent shape with about 3 or 4 other guys. He responded that he used to when he was my age but not really into it anymore or something like that. I wanted to say more but bit my lip and gave him a thumbs down and told him politely he stunk as a fan (this exchange wasn't heated we were half laughing and smiling as we spoke, but it was just rubbing me the wrong way totally thinking about this thread at that moment). His friend seemed to agree with me and was like "and he even played here." Well I respected his position for the remainder of the first half after I said my piece and tried to limit any unnecessary standing but still cheered my heart out. Funny thing is while watching the McPherson tribute on the big screen who do I see but this guy among the guys out there next to Don. I'm not sure who he was but thought it was kind of funny.

Why is football decorum different from basketball decorum? Seems to me that there are appropriate times to stand and cheer at both. It also seems that standing for most of the game is unreasonable if the people behind you can't see if you do. I'm not sure but I suspect that even at he major venues, the majority sit the majority of the time. I'll check that out on TV this coming weekend. I think there are a lot of generalizations being tossed around as fact that simply are not true.

I doubt that is true. Otherwise, why have seats in the stadium.

There are times to stand, and times I have told the "sit downers" to get off their asses and cheer. I have told the ushers to go away, or bring me the AD to tell me to sit. I then turn around and do my thing. Hey, I was on the bball Jumbotron for a few years standing up, trying to get those around me up and cheering.
I figured I have as much right to stand and cheer as not. I am not interfering with their view. They can stand and see the court/field.
I did it when appropriate. That's what a courteous fan does.
