I don't really care about Weissman and his facility in particular. I find it annoying that a tiny fine is all that gets levied for this kind of pollution. Shooting the facility down until under code would probably cost him millions a day, and would be a true disincentive to breaking the law.
If I was building a porch on my house and did something out of code, they would shut down the project, fine me a significant amount, and possibly force me to take it all down and start over.
Yet a business that makes billions, run by a guy who makes hundreds of millions gets a tiny $400k fine.
It just doesn't make sense. There is no reason to not break the law.
For the record, I was appalled Syracuse ran off a donor like Weissman.
