Weitsman issues

what did I miss? Where was anything explained? This issue is this...many have inferred to me here and away from here that some horrible criminal type thing going on, and that's what trueblue suggests as well and that this is NOT the issue (Environmental) that had SU push him out. That it was NOT just the rapper/recruiting thing that RF, Bayside and others have referred to as well nor is it the finances of the box and security as that's NOT the issue either, but there's supposedly more and that more is nefarious.

That THAT is why they cut ties because of some unsaid, unspoken issue. That's my beef. If its the flashy style or the finances the thought on my end is work it out, then the ridiculous environmental thing is put up potentially as the big behind the scenes reason he was pushed out, only now it's something else.

Lots of BS is my perception. Just stop (SU and everyone else suggesting such) that there's more to the story when it appears there isn't. Enough. They, the critics, simply don't like his style, don't like him either and don't want him being a part of any of it. Fine. That's their right. Fine, get it. Keep it at that.

Just want to point out that I didn't say anything about rappers / celebrities that he paid to attend games with him.

Or rappers/celebrities that he flew up in his private jet, along with a hoops 'croot.

There were rumblings that that entourage was partaking of stuff that would be more fitting at Llvll, or The Ewe in their heyday.

It feeds the narrative of those that don't realize that he is a huge fan and was trying to help and trying to do things the right way. If Kent would have reached out to him none of this would have had to happen. It's called respect.
I don't really care about Weissman and his facility in particular. I find it annoying that a tiny fine is all that gets levied for this kind of pollution. Shooting the facility down until under code would probably cost him millions a day, and would be a true disincentive to breaking the law.

If I was building a porch on my house and did something out of code, they would shut down the project, fine me a significant amount, and possibly force me to take it all down and start over.

Yet a business that makes billions, run by a guy who makes hundreds of millions gets a tiny $400k fine.

It just doesn't make sense. There is no reason to not break the law.

For the record, I was appalled Syracuse ran off a donor like Weissman.

How much money did AW donate to the university? I'm not talking about NIL contributions.

I know that he paid for a box. But if he wasn't a big donor, than why would Kent meet with him?

AW is a billionaire. He hob knobs with celebrities. He's probably not accustomed to people not accommodating him.
That’s a fair question. I don’t know how much or if any donations were made to the school. I would imagine none for academics. But, having a box for years and courtside seats is a significant purchase.

Except that’s not what happened at all.
Are you saying that ignoring environmental regulations isn't breaking the law? Or are you saying Weissman and his company were fined without breaking the law?

Wasn’t it codes violations? They were new emissions codes and he was fined and he has two years to comply?

he played 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) at both the shooting guard and point guard positions. Iverson won NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 1997 and was an 11-time NBA All-Star, won the All-Star game MVP award in 2001 and 2005, and was the NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2001. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. In October 2021, he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.[3] Iverson is often regarded as one of the greatest scorers and one of the most influential players in NBA history.

Do you mean that ^^^ Iverson? Only real black mark was that time he spent at Georgetown.
And he skipped too many practices.

Neither. Have you read the consent decree? I have. Do you know how this enforcement action began? I do. Do you work in this field? I do.

He’s spending millions to bring the property up to code. And the EPA gave him until 2025 to get there.

Since you are the expert, could you kindly explain it to me in layman's terms?

All I saw is that the rich guy got away with a nothing fine, substantially less than his car payments... If I'm barking up the wrong tree, please enlighten me.

There is more to the story. AW wanted Kent to kiss the ring. I'm glad he didn't. The school and AW were not on the same page and it appears to me, they never would be. We seem to be doing just fine without AW. And not for nothing, and this is a fact, not an opinion, the basketball coaches wanted AW do spend differently than what he intended to do.

I agree, a non-insignificant revenue stream. But probably not "chancellor-of-the university-must-take-my-call-because-RESPECT" worthy.

Sure.

His recycling facility has an air permit issued by the state of NY, but that permit didn’t cover VOCs. Likely because neither The EPA or NYSDEC recognized that the shredding process generates sufficient heat to melt plastic and release volatile organic compounds. Based on the enforcement alert issued by the EPA in 2021, they finally recognized this potential and put the 350 active shredders in the country on notice that they were going to look at this now during inspections, and likely when any permits were renewed.

Not sure what was the trigger (inspection or permit renewal), but Upstate was issued a notice of violation with a requirement to outline their corrective actions. That includes an updated permit application (already submitted), new air pollution control equipment (looks like that is still in the design/build phase), and then there will be a testing period before the issue is completely resolved.

Why do you need a magic bullet when the evidence suggests they were just tired of dealing with him?
don't need anything and the point being that's fine, agree, their prerogative. Been referring to the notion that been promulgated there's more to the his story in a bad bad way.

Got it, got it.

Was looking at similar enforcement actions, and it shows me that Upstate’s actions helped reduce their fine. A company in Rhode Island had no air permit at all and was fined 250k by the feds and 2 mill by the state. A company in Mass got hit with a 900k fine. And schnitzer steel in Oakland got a 4.1 mill fine.

Your last sentence- now that is interesting and important in the wider context.

Adam Weitsman is a polarizing figure on this message board. He definitely likes the attention that he got from bringing celebrities to games. There is no denying that. The debate is whether he brought anything to recruiting with what he did and how he did it, and whether it was worth the risk of sanctions. It is difficult to assess. Our recruiting certainly wasn’t all that great the past few years and AW only started his NIL attempts for about a year, I believe. So, it’s difficult to judge what affect he would have on recruiting with a newly energized staff and whether he would modify his approach if asked to.
Didn't want to get back into this, but...

There is some middle ground here. Adam is to be commended for turning his life around and his philanthropic efforts in Central New York and the Southern Tier. He is, and acts like a mega social media influencer. Some people will never understand or accept that facet of modern society and that's fine.

Beyond that Adam had a relationship of several years with Syracuse University that was mutually beneficial. There is plenty of data available that shows that benefit on both sides. $$ for SU, clicks for AW. With any relationship there are two sides and Adam chose to make his side fairly public while SU will not and likely cannot. There are issues at play here that go beyond methods of support and recruiting that led to the dissolution of the relationship. I understand why the University chose to cut ties and, while members of the administration did maintain a line of communication with him, the Chancellor would apparently not engage. While I think Adam deserved that courtesy, at the very least, I do not believe anything constructive would have come out of it.

Thank you. So the EPA changed the deal on everybody on how enforcement is going to happen, and its taking a while to get everything corrected? But, compared to peer companies, Upstate is actually doing pretty well?

I agree. If he’s such a great fan why did he try to burn everything down on the way out through Syracuse.com?

I generally respect what he has and had done for the area, but that’s where he lost me.

The guy cannot do anything quietly including going away. Everything needs to be broadcast as a PR win for him.
So what.

thanks Mark!
