Maximus was a higher alcohol drink, more like malt liquor. They introduced it at some kind of big event on campus. I wasn't the only one puking my guts out that weekend.

I was up at Oswego two years ago and for a town once known for its 150 bars, it's pretty sad to say that it is extremely limited on where to go. So, if Oswego has been affected that much, I'm sure most college towns are as well.

I'm in Oswego quite a bit and I agree with you. There are still quite a few local corner bars where the drafts are cold. I think kids have to go downtown which is a long way from campus. At least the Shed is a liquor store if it suits you.

definitely quantity over quality. and if you were constipated before you started drinking long necks, you were fine the next morning.

The off campus party scene is much bigger than when I went to SU (87-91). My daughter graduated in 2023 and lived off campus her last 2 years. We would park at her house for football games. Every 3rd house, it seemed, had lawn parties pre and post game.
There is also a really big underground music scene in the neighborhood east of campus on weekends with multiple basement "clubs". It seems highly illegal to me and is a disaster waiting to happen, but it is what it is.

covid killed the bar scene outside of orange crate. and they do well because it has an outdoor component and often a DJ/live music. Everywhere else is dead because they all party off campus now -- covid accelerated a trend that was already happening.

I've drank plenty of "crappy beer" and I'm actually kind of proud of it. What college kids are actually drinking beer for the taste anyway.

But Orange Crate was the only bar we could find with any buzz. We tried Saltine Warrior and Press Room pub and both were good bars but empty.
Fagans was empty. Some beach bar near Marshall st was empty. We even tried Coleman’s on Saturday night and it was dead.

Faegans was empty?
It was never my bar, Chucks was, but Faegans was always packed. Heck, they were all packed when I was there in 93. Every last one.

Colemans and Kitty’s arent sports bars.

Shaughnessy's and Press Room are both decent, although service at both leaves a lot to be desired. Clinton Street Pub used to be solid, but I haven't been there in years to watch sports, so I can't vouch for it. If Blarney counts as "near downtown" then I suppose you'd have to throw Chadwick's in Eastwood on the list. But yes, your greater point isn't untrue. I really wish a solid sports bar would open somewhere within shouting distance of the university. Harvey's Garden is a great spot, but not really a sports bar (although the Bills gameday parties they have look like a good time).

So my buddies and I go to a Cuse away game each year for football and golf. We like to hit the local college bars too.

This year we went to the Stanford game in Cuse to see the new dome. None of us had been to a game in Cuse in ~20 years.

Loved the dome, loved Dinosaur, loved the Fine Lot tailgate, enjoyed the crowd at Orange Crate.

Where are the good bars for Cuse students? What we saw is not even close to the other campuses we’ve been. There must be more. Please clue me in.

I was at Coleman's on a Saturday night about a month ago around 11 p.m. and it was absolutely slammed. There are also definitely more SU kids that go downtown now than back in the day. Wolff's Biergarten is always full of SU kids, along with Margaritas and Benjamin's in Armory Square. And like others have said, it's a lot more difficult these days to get into a bar underage than it was 20 years ago.

Southern Tier does HEAVY lifting for the sports bar scene near the Sabres arena. Draft Room is solid too. Pearl Street is a good pregame spot, but it's no more a sports bar than Faegan's, it's just much larger.
