What was the purpose of the last timeout in regulation?

I was going to post about this. It made 0 sense. We just had a stoppage for review. Why was a play not drawn up during this stoppage? We were clearly playing zone if they got the ball so why did Jim not draw up a play? Then you use your last timeout after getting across half court immediately. Don’t take advantage of a 2-1. And even worse. After 2 consecutive stoppages WE DONT EVEN COME OUT WITH A SET PLAY and settle for a TERRIBLE shot!!!

The timeout could have been extremely useful when we got the steal and Judah didn’t have a lane. Could have used a timeout with 2 seconds left to draw up a last second attempt.

Young team. There’s a real chance he was coaching them on the late game scenarios they might be about to face, rather than drawing up a play.

In general, JB hasn’t been much of a timeout taker in his career. He used them all tonight. I think that’s a function of the team’s youth. Calm them down and get their heads right.

Exactly. First off the 2 for 1 is real, why don't coaches do it. Two what was the play supposed to be? It was crazy.

I posted in my group text w a bunch of my fraternity brothers that we needed to set up a play to score quickly there, so we’d get a 2-for-1.

And then we promptly… did the exact opposite of that.

It’s kinda a miracle Richmond turned it over late, otherwise I’m sure they would have gotten off yet another killer shot just before the buzzer.

JB is a proponent of letting them play in last second scenarios. If Mintz made the correct pass (Girard on the wing) that would have been a better look than any set play you’re going to run with 3 seconds left, inbounding from half court.

I don’t disagree with you. But he had that option. There was no reason to take the timeout right after the stoppage for review. Not to mention there was no set play run out of that timeout.

The players needed the extra rest.

The play broke down and Joe ended up with the ball late in the shot clock. He didn’t have many options.

A couple of things. JB has been verrrry consistent that he doesn’t believe going 2-1 is a good idea with college players, no way he’s going to let this team do it with its collective youth. He says you end up taking a rushed/bad shot.. I actually agree with him.

As far as the play call. The design was blown up early in the possession and we had to ad lib. It was an awful shot by Joe.

He hasn’t been much of a time out taker? For 30 years almost every game down the stretch we have fewer TO than our opponents

I’ve been actively watching for at least 20 of those years. That’s not how I remember it. Specifically, he has tended to let teams play through the opponent’s runs (which I like a lot). I don’t recall many games where we needed a timeout late that we didn’t have.

One question here. Is JB allowed to coach the guys when the refs are doing a possession review? That’s the only reason I could see for why they would call the TO immediately after the review. Or, and this just came to me, he spent the review coaching up the defense they would play if they didn’t get the ball. Bet that’s it.

No. That’s true. He saves one. I’ll give him that. But he goes from 4 to 1 in the time it takes freshman Etan to get in foul trouble

I was super annoyed by that timeout. Made zero sense. Especially when the big plan coming out of it was dribble around aimlessly until a panicked garbage shot by Kreese. Then adding insult to injury on the next possession we lose the ball on the poss arrow in a tie up, which we could have saved the possession by calling a TO there but we’re all out. Only thing worse would have been one of the inexperienced players calling a TO there giving us the dreaded Moten Technical.

Oh I was yelling at my TV at that one. Literally just had a stoppage that was the length of the timeout then we use our last timeout of the game to draw up a "play" that was just iso nonsense. Dino Babers School of Game Management level stuff.
