tough choice.

team 2 lacks someone to pass to for a short jumper while team one lacks a true point guard.
I think Dion and MCW could give rautins and gmac a slightly tough time up top, but not so much the other way. They are more athletic.
Team 2 also has a slight bulk advantage in the low post imo, and better freethrows, arinze is going to miss his.

I would say team two, but if they did lose it would be two reasons
1.dion and mcw would have to kick it out to wes for three instead of a midrange jump shot And
2.nobody could slow down melo (rak would be the best shot imo).

I'd pack it in against MCW and Dion. Let them shoot jump shots all day, and then you shade the zone toward Wes. Chances are they aren't going to make a high percentage, so you would have an easier time defending penetration. Also, while Gmac wasn't particularly good at D, Andy Rautins wasn't to far behind MCW in his D at the top.

LOL, myself included at times.
Ha, you aren't even close to getting into my thread-killer hall of fame.

And so as not to hijack this fine thread, I'll go with team 1 for its superior offensive versatility and the presence of one of the finest scorers in the game's history.

I'm surprised that some people think that Dion and MCW would give Rautins and GMac so much trouble. On offense GMac and Rautins played against guys that were more athletic on a regular basis and did quite well because of how heady they were. The attention team 2 would have to give Melo would only enhance this. On defense I think Dion would give them more trouble than MCW because they'd have to respect his outside shot more but the back of the zone would still be able to help out with him while only having to worry about Wes on the outside. They'd be able to sag off of MCW because they'd know he's not a shooter.

Pretty spot on. Andy was the first guy that started getting all of those steals at the top of the zone around the foul line area. His anticipation and positioning were great his senior year.

I like this but quibble on the Andy better than MCW on D. Better than Dion, clearly yes better than MCW I don't know about that. I will say my dream SU defensive backcourt is both MCW and Andy.

Agreed but MCW was a beast that teams almost stopped trying to pass against at for long stretches of the game. They used to have to pass around him to set up a different pass. I think MCW was better but Andy was also great.

That team, Andy's senior season, was great at trapping, and Andy always knew where the guy being trapped on the sideline was going to pass the ball and jumped the lane. I don't know why all of Syracuse's teams don't look to aggressively trap the sidelines when a player gets too close.

Collectively, MCW and Triche played the top of zone so well that we will be forever spoiled.

Yep as we all know he almost single handedly caused IU to melt down in sweet 16 lol

Yeah, I'd say he was better too. I just think some people are characterizing it as if the top of team one's zone was horrible, and that's not accurate.

We did a pretty good job of it against ND, i was impressed. Now if we could just pull off same again on sat...

It would be interesting to see, too, if his impact at the top of the zone would be minimized by Melo. He would be able to get the ball on top or on the wing and then work off of the dribble or he'd be big enough to get it to Fair around the foul line or AO down low. Our guards wouldn't have to initiate the offense, so MCW height advantage may be lessened.

And when we were at our best in 09/10 guess who was next to Andy? Brandon Triche! He is so under rated as a defender. I think his positioning and reactions to having a gambling partner up there where the best of any guard we have had.

Yes, he was the perfect compliment to Andy and MCW (and Dion) defensively. He wasn't too bad offensively, either. Then again, I've been told he sucked...

Is there any reason why this game cant actually happen? Midnite Madness next year, pack the Dome w recruits...mill ea to the winning team...

Undoubtedly MCW would cause problems on D initially but I agree that with CJ and Melo both being great midrange players they would figure it out and while AO posted deep its a lob or bounce to either at the FT line and everything opens up. Conversely its not like team one would be pitching a shut out of team 2. It would be like an NBA game trying to play to get certain guys to shoot certain shots. You want MCW shooting jumpers, you want CJ and Wes to drive, you want Andy and Gerry to drive rather than shoot. You want Rick, Rak and AO shooting anywhere outside of 8'. You live with these things. Dion and Melo are the guys that if they get hot can just kill you from anywhere in everyway.

I didn't get to see the ND game. I know we have done it quite a bit in years since then, but that team was so aggressive that if a player caught the ball near the sideline and hesitated, he was gobbled up, never to be seen again.

Team 1 would have great floor balance, which would leave Melo unguardable, so given that they have the best player and he would be free to go to work(Rautins and GMac can not be left) I think they would win more often than not, even though team 2 is more talented, bigger, and more athletic overall.

What team did Gmac or Rautins play against in their careers that had a backcourt as athletic as MCW and Dion?

I remember Rudy Gay and Marcus Williams giving McNamara all kinds of trouble. Except when we beat them in New York in March, of course.
