Whoops, good call. Forgot about that. So not unprecedented but it took an extreme level of failure. The guy went 4-28 and 8-24. Red has a 20-12 and TBD.

Note: I’m not advocating a 3rd year for Red, just that I can see where he most likely gets a 3rd year.
Billy Gillespie got sacked at UK after 2 years, was later hire at Texas Tech and lasted 1 year. He has since resurfaces at Tarleton State.

Up until a couple of weeks ago I thought a third year was a lock. Now I don't think it is. Red will have to have this team show some life this year and win some games.
I still think he gets a 3rd year. I’m like 85/15.

We are the 7th all time program in wins. The 7th all time winning FBS program* is Penn State. Would Penn State stand by their man in a losing season like the season ours is shaping up to be? There isn’t a historical precedent because their bad seasons are 7-5, but I tend to think they would not. While penn state has more money, we should freaking act like and set expectations in line with our historical stature and accomplishments.

Technically Yale is 7th in all time cfb wins but I omitted them for obvious reasons.

SU is 5th historically/all time when including the bogus 101 vacated W’s!

Nice find. There we go. If Kentucky can get rid of Gillespie after two middling years and then hire Calipari, Syracuse can do the same with Red. Let’s go find a guy that can bring success like Kentucky did back in 2009. Someone let Wildhack know!

Not in my mind but Red needs to avoid that embarrassment if he wants a 3rd year for sure

I think you need to talk it out with yourself and then come back and tell us what you decided.

Billie got canned at 40-27 with 1 NCAAT appearance and 1 NIT. Sadly we would throw Red a parade with those results

For those who want to take a trip down memory lane, some interesting quotes: Gillispie out as Kentucky coach in second year

Outside the CNY bubble, people vastly overestimate how much the brand carries these days nationally.

Yes, it's still the name, but this is not a program taken seriously currently. We saw that change quickly with football; the question is does JW have the stones to do it this soon? I'm still skeptical and expect a Year 3, despite the product.
I’ve noticed this too. The bubble. What people know of Cuse hoops and football outside of 13210.

Maybe we should give people a local and non local tag.

I’m not local but still close enough to drive to a game if motivated.

And retired snowbirds don’t count! That’s local in my book cuz you ain’t got nothing else going on but sitting by the pool and complaining about Cuse.

Interesting that the very bright and decisive AD who made that decision is still there.

My fear is that the athletic dept. doesn't take the hoops program serious enough to start from scratch after two years. See: bussing to games.

Like football found itself, we're no longer playing with the big boys. Just depends when we're ready to admit it.

There’s a very good chance of that. It’s apparent in the facilities and other program necessities. The money for football is so large now, it may not matter what basketball does. Hate to say it, but it’s true

I assume the Athletic Dept. is under tremendous pressure right now, as are most P4 Athletic Depts., to find $20 million plus to pay players starting next Fall. How that factors in to a decision on the basketball coach is a very good question. I don't know which way it cuts. Thoughts anyone?

I think the consensus is that it’s highly improbable because firing a coach after 2 years could be unprecedented in major college basketball. Even Guthridge and Doherty got 3 years each at UNC.

Different situations but last season I can think of at least two:
  • Kenny Payne was fired after Louisville 8-24 in his second season.
  • Josh Eilert (interrim) wasn't retained after WVU went 9-23 in his first season.
I googled a little and this guy was let go after his first full season with 10 wins. Probably more but it requires digging.

I really don't see how Red stays in the event of single digit wins.

Seems like Autry bought himself good will last year with something that looked like watchable on court games although nothing near expectations. I mean for some not really for us. Could have to do the opposite this year to be relieved of duties.

I never said I’d be one of those fans that was hoping for losses but Autry is going to need to go like 3-12 to close things out to really be in that conversation.

For real. It will be on espn.com for like 5 minutes and nobody will care thereafter. It’s a 10 minute news cycle in most people’s minds thanks to TikTok
Exactly and you can change the cycle with making a big hire and winning the press conference. When JB was forced out I was happy that a change was made, however as much as I like AA that hire wasnt winning the press conference and making national waves. It was JB was gone and it got 2 minutes on PTI.

If this happens after a single digit winning season... good luck with that SU.

It’s part of why I don’t watch or attend games anymore, and will stop donating to the athletic program after 30 years of doing so if Red stays - keeping Red would be a clear signal the athletic department is way far down the priority list. It’s not going to be a priority to me if it isn’t a fairly high priority to Syracuse University.
